I just brought my mini back home from my parents house, it was my first car, I got it when I was 16 back in the 90's it's been sat under a cover since 1997 so it's going to be quite the project to get back on the road. I've only recently discovered your channel but thank you for making it as I have forgotten so much. I've already spent thousands in my head on upgrades 😬

My advice is to spend the cash in your head on needed repairs to get a good and save road going Mini, and save the upgrades for when it's done and you can actually drive it. Restorations cost more than you initially anticipated! Good luck!

Unfortunately I can’t help but wish it had come out sooner and saved me some work, but super excited to hopefully see wide adoption from others. Hi Cole. Great intro. Struggling to find my hif44 carb for a long time, i recently trailered it to Vancouver, Canada to have it tuned by great people at Steveston Motor Company. Wow, what a difference. The car is currently running very well, so my question is what is the benefit for me to convert to this new throttle body and ecu which i suspect would require upgrading the fuel system and whatever else I need. I am looking for the cost/benefit ratio. What would you say is the cost for all that I need for the conversion, and what is the benefit after the upgrade?
@leeedwards7721 Жыл бұрын
Hi Bud, Check out JET-MOTORS [US] For Conversions they do an BOLT-ON Turbo KIT you can do at home [That was their goal] Also check out Specialist Components [UK] For some real Trick stuff also do Forced induction with Rotrex Supercharger [Raise Alternator] As the super-Charger fits underneath. Really good Fair ££ package. Having an EFI Conversion [as to an Carb] Means you ONLY Tune ONCE, But also with the ECU if you upgrade your engine that EFI Will Fit [Maybe change Injectors] But these new EFI Throttle body KITS [PLUG N PLAY] Are brilliant. No more downtime with Jets/Clogging/Re-Setting etc.

@ToddDunning2 жыл бұрын
Down here in Cali Nick Upton (Boot2Bonnet) is set up to dyno and tune the SC 5-port EFI so I assume it would not be a huge leap to do the Haltech and your TB? Or are we not limited to the Haltech....minisquirt etc..?
@classicminidiy2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely not a huge leap at all. This throttle body is totally agnostic of the ECU. So as long as your ECU accepts a 3 wire throttle position sensor it will work with it. You can pair the injectors that suit your setup with it and bobs your uncle! I wouldn't be surprised if Nick finds it much MUCH easier to tune than the SC setup. Apparently their ECU software has its challenges.

I like the idea, but like most throttle body injection systems out there it will have the same issues as a carb at low engine temps and low manifold velocities. The fuel will wet the walls leading to fuel inconsistencies. I’d like to see a manifold with the injectors near the intake valves. Don’t get me wrong it will be better than a carb for efficiency, but it would be better with the injectors near the valve. One other note you don’t need the throttle position sensor if you may your fuel in speed density. You could simplify this part and maybe cut a couple dollars out of it if you sold it separately.
@classicminidiy Жыл бұрын
Manifolds with the injectors closer to the inlet valves on a Siamese engine like this one cause port robbing much worse than fueling up at the throttle body unfortunately. The only way to get EFI working on the OG A-Series really well is simulating the wet manifold config that a carb does out of the box. I personally prefer my fueling in volumetric efficiency as I find it more intuitive while tuning. In a perfect world I could do individual port injection on a crossflow head. Something we are exploring selling options for in the future.
@jasoncurry29062 жыл бұрын
How much testing has been done with this? Do you need to add a idle control valve ?
@classicminidiy2 жыл бұрын
We have tested this extensively on NA engines and some turbo configurations. The key to it running nicely is making sure you have the right injectors for your configuration. An Idle Air Control valve isn't required however I will be installing one with my setup and covering that in upcoming videos. :-D

@classicminidiy2 жыл бұрын
We haven't run them in a twin configuration before but with some work you may be able to do it using a custom throttle actuator of some sort. (maybe similar to the way webers work?) As long as they mount up to the flange properly, make a nice seal, and you find the right injectors I don't see why not. The factory inlet manifolds on those likely dont have the correct pattern though.

@@classicminidiy I've heard that you start running into the siamese port robbing issues if you try and inject each port individually (without clever ECU code to time the pulses exactly). The single SU throttle body is effectively a "wet" manifold and that's why it works OK.
@classicminidiy2 жыл бұрын
This is very true. The best solution for an a-series is always going to be a cross flow setup with the inlets on the front. With the single throttle body on the back you have to pulse the 2 injectors as a batch twice each engine revolution, 180 degs out.
@murty44712 жыл бұрын
@@classicminidiy correct, one injector is wired for cylinders 1 & 4, and the other injector is wired for cylinders 2 & 3, so that for a firing order of 1-3-4-2, the injectors alternate 180 crank degrees apart to keep the manifold wet.
@classicminidiy2 жыл бұрын
Either that or you can batch fire both at a lower rate twice per cycle. It boils down to the injectors and their flow rate.

They are functionally similar and performance will be the same. The goal here is to offer something of the same quality but at a more affordable price bracket. So this unit is essentially their "full assembly" option minus injectors.
@murty44712 жыл бұрын
@@classicminidiy thanks. Yeah, with the current exchange rate theirs is around $530 USD but like you say they don't give the ram pipe or filter backplate at that price. Great to see a competing product at a great price. The Haltech ECU you are using is going to be far superior to the SCS D400 ECU that SC provide (I couldn't get the transient fuelling to work very well when the throttle was depressed slowly, and I suspect that's the problem with their ECU). I gave up in the end and decided to fit an Arden 8-port head on injection.
@meanmachine7107 Жыл бұрын
I have the SC throttle body with the SCS Delta 400 on my mini. It was an absolute pain in the arse to get going and still requires constant fettling to get the car though MOT's every year. I too couldn't get the transient fuelling to work very well. Also the SCS Delta 400 doesn't play nice with the newer Bosch narrow band O2 sensors, so if you have to replace your NB O2 sensor look out. I had to create a buffer circuit between the ECU and the O2 sensor as the input impedance of the ECU NB O2 input is too low for the lower quality modern sensors (compared to 25 years ago for the OEM narrowband sensor). The wideband closed loop control seems to be impossible to optimise and always gets into rev oscillations at various points in the rev range, ends up being a game of 'Whack a Mole'. The guys at SCS are super helpful but they could do with listening to the feedback in respect to the mini use case. The SC/SCS basically operates as an ECU controlled wet carburettor and ignition. Am seriously considering changing to Col's solution.
@murty4471 Жыл бұрын
@@meanmachine7107 Unfortunately the Siamese port robbing issue will always be there with this single throttle body approach and the injectors in the throttle body (same port robbing issue with carbs). The only way around that is to fit a cam sensor and put the injectors in the intake manifold at the port like the MPi mini. Then, very carefully time the injection point of the inner cylinders versus outer cylinders (quite involved). The other option is to go for an 8-port or 7-port cylinder head. I opted for an Arden 8-port head. I'm also ditching the horrible SCS Delta 400 and going with Haltech.
