13 miles from where i live. Ive been here a fair few times. Plug the car in, buy a coffee from Costa and then go and read my book in the rocking chair whilst waiting for the car to charge. Its an oasis of calm. Chelmsford is crying out for decent charging facilities, i wish this was a bit nearer to home. Keep up the great work Gridserve👍

Recently I’ve done 850mile journey in ICE (2drivers), Glasgow to Essex via Leicester. Every 2 to 3 hours taking 15 min brakes, friend of mine to have a cigarette and me to use a toilet (I’m havy water drinker 😉). We ended up stopping 5 times at services and we had one 1 hour dinner stop as well. 15 min stop adds in most modern vehicles about 100 miles plus. In theory, we wouldn’t have to had to stop for extra charging at all in an EV. You charge when you can not when you have to. This way you maximise your stops. The future is EV bright with forecourts like that. Imagine in 5 years time to have them every 100 motorway miles. I drive Ioniq 5 since this September and I only use public chargers (our flats don’t have charging points). Some AC chargers are only 20pence, some are 40pence per kW, and only 10 min walk from my flat. There’s rapid Ionity 350kW charger near me as well. When not in a hurry I use AC units, when I must I use rapid ones. Only used rapid once to test charging speeds of my Ioniq 5, and I’ve added 59kWh in 20 min, that translates to 200 miles ( I get around 3.2miles/kWh @ 70mph). Some chargers are still free in Scotland and that makes it even much cheaper for EV owners. First 2000 miles has cost me just shy of £100, all on public chargers. Not too bad😱.

Yours would have to be one of the worst use scenarios I've seen tbh as the only real advantage I can see is to be able to charge at home off solar. Have you watched the videos about a recent road trip in an old BMW diesel and a Porsche EV in your country. We're already seeing the costs of charging going up as more people get sucked into this green wet dream so I hope that the premium you paid for an EV plus the large depreciation and insurance costs will pay off in the long run. I suspect that they won't.

EVs will not suit everybody's live style. I love my Ioniq 5 and don't care about depreciation, planing on keeping it for a very long time (I hate changing cars and buying other peoples problems is not my thing). Charging on motorways is very expensive, but most drivers use them only on rare occasions. I don't have home charger just yet and using public chargers makes it a little bit more difficult and expensive. Some chargers in Scotland are still free to use. As for that video you have mentioned, I don't have time to waste on idiots trying to prove how bad EVs are. Everything you do in your life can be done better if you only put your brain cells to work (Porshe Tycan owner doesn't have much to show for). That trip can and was done on few occasions in EV in 15h and 30min (or thereabouts), and it took only 1h30min (or thereabouts) to charge the car. EVs are not perfect, nothing is. Enjoy your ICE

@@oldbloke204 By "idiots" I mean people driving by high power charger, coming off motorway and driving for few miles into remote parts of the country, looking for 7kW charger and complaining it takes them hours to charge the battery. I've watched 2 videos of his when doing my research on EVs, and in my humble opinion he is an idiot. I always buy vehicles with total cost of ownership as well, my needs are different than yours, so my end decision was an EV. Local councils are as bad as Govt. and bringing LEZ and in few years more OLEZ will be challenging for many people. I future proofed myself here. EVs are not better or worst than ICE, just different, that's all.

But they have had that in the USA for a long time, but the charging infrastructure in the USA is very unevenly distributed regionally. Every 2nd electric cars are registered in California. There are also differences in Europe: the largest charging station in Europe is located on Autobahn No. 8 near Augsburg, Germany - not UK With 47,715,977 charging locations, Germany also has the largest network, because Germany is the largest country in Europe (if you exclude Russia). Nonetheless the Netherlands has the best charging structure, followed by Norway. The UK is 13th somewhere behind Germany

I used the norwich one last month a couple of times when visiting Norfolk. That one is on a smaller site as all the charging bays are under the shops and facilities, its a clever layout. I got given a free charge because the first charger I went to didn't want to work correctly. They even had someone walking around going up to cars as they pulled in to check see if they needed any help, perfect for new ev owners

Went there yesterday afternoon, you just pull up, plug in, tap your debit card and charge. As it was my first time I went in to the station as i wasn't sure if you needed an account and i didnt just want to park up and find im blocking a charger, the chap asked what type of EV i had (I have and Volvo XC40 2024) he said pick any charging bay you like. It was so easy to do then there is a cafe a supermarket and a newsagents, places to sit and showroom. 10 out of 10

What they charge for electricity at these places is equivalent to your local petrol station charging £2.75 a litre. I wouldn’t pull into the forecourt finding that inspiring 🤦🏻‍♂️ This is what happens when people can’t do maths 😂

But as competition increases prices will come down. It’s inspiring because they will make charging easier/more convenient for EV drivers and will eventually replace petrol/diesel forecourts.

Nobody has done the maths to verify the statement that the station might only occasionally from the grid. The 624 roof panels cover an area of approx 1248m2, ie 250Kw of power, ie almost 1 super charger. The total draw if all stations were occupied and running max chat is approx 6.3MW, thus the 6MW battery will last 1 hour at night or a bit more on a rainy day. Clay Hill Farm produces 10MW from its 31240 panels over 44.5 acres and sends the power down a 40 mile cable. Anyone thought about the carbon footprint of that and the land taken up for 1 EV fuel station?? So the solar farm can power the garage on a good day even if full, but the 6MW battery is probably too small for night-time or dark day operation. Thus grid draws will be necessary. The cost of electrons is 49 or 69p/Kwh depending on which charger is used, ie 14p/mile or 20p/miles for most EVs. My turbo diesel runs at 9.6p/mile.

You're correct, I shouldn't have said "occasionally pull from the grid". Of course the site is grid powered, but their own solar apparently puts more back into the grid that the WHOLE Gridserve network uses. The battery charges at night too when the electricity is usually the greenest too, hence why the price sometimes goes negative when its windy.

Nice video, interesting to see they had an Ora Cat on site, I tried to charge at Gridserve at Sandbach services on the M6, the charger couldn’t communicate with my Ora Cat then went out of order, apparently a known issue. Not sure whether that is the fault of Gridserve or Ora, but I hope they get it sorted soon. I would love to use a charging forecourt like this. Thanks for sharing 😊

@@GoGreenAutos We call them gas stations here. I have never seen one like this, at least where I live. If the gas station where I live has chargers at all it is 1 or 2, usually fast chargers. Our municipal government has built some community level 2 chargers. Tesla put 10 of their chargers in a strip mall parking lot which came online a few months ago.

Yes, that was their original intention but since then Gridserve made a side step and bought out the Ecotricity network that had older (failing) chargers in motorway service stations across the UK. They have replaced hundreds of chargers across the country so presumably haven't been focussing on the Electric Forecourt idea. I understand that most delays come from planning (surprise surprise) and from the slowness of electricity connections to the grid being approved and then physically installed. These forecourts are all very nice but I'm not convinced that the extra costs of the facilities are going to be justified. My own experience is that I'm only stopped for 15 minutes on a rapid charger before I'm on my way so by the time I've gone to the toilet and picked up a coffee there's not much time to be taking advantage of the other stuff.

No, all the same price. I did the same (which you can see in the previous video) as I thought the Citroen e-C4 charged at 150kW, but then discovered it is 100kW, so the 90kW chargers would have been fine.

Also look at the throughput capacity for one of these compared to a traditional service station that are very very common and often open 24 hrs these days. Maybe 10 mins at a petrol pump and then drive for another 6-800kms as against maybe half an hour, or more, at a charger and travel half that distance to do it all again.

Arguably it may have been. Depends on how you define it I guess. Similar locations in Norway are usually run by brands that were formerly known as fuel stations, like Shell and Circle-K, so they have a few fuel pumps on the side for the dinosaurs.

It can vary greatly- lunch time almost full. I used to charged there before I got my home charger (2 years ago) the difference in use is massive now. Regularly have to pick up family member from there so have noticed the increase.

Possibly in the future. But currently each network has a nation wide price, so not really much point displaying it. You get to know what each network charges. For example, Gridserve's is here gridserve.com/prices. The price is also displayed on the charger too. Some sites do have display boards already though.

There's plenty of vehicles that can only charge on AC, such as the Renault Zoe, all Smart models, Mercedes B-class, Renault Kangoo and others. We need at least some AC chargers at all sites. They're also handy if the DC's are in all use at busy times as its better to be get some charge than waiting.

Don’t be fooled. Unless the chargers are connected directly to the Solar Farm some distance away, which is unlikely, you cannot claim Green Energy. This facility is run off the Mains Grid with solar and battery back up. Without the connection to the grid it could only operate for a few hours.

As I said, the solar farm puts more back into the grid that this site and the WHOLE Gridserve network uses. Plus the onsite battery can charge at night when the electricity is cheaper and the majority of the time its greener too.

Of course it's on the grid! The solar offsets costs and the battery enables time shifting which helps the grid balancing and enables Gridserve to make money. Don't worry though ... the entire grid is increasing its zero carbon percentage. (It wouldn't matter where the solar farm was located in the country ... the electricity is fed into the same grid!)

Unless the price of electric charging goes down, I can't see EV being the future. I recently had an electric car don't get me wrong I loved it, but had to go back to petrol because it was costing me more to charge than fill up over a course of a week driving. As a courier I'm using my car all the time, so EV just isn't practical with speeds, with the current technology of batteries and charging times. If you can charge at home overnight, brilliant you'll save money, but public charging is still far too expensive in the long run to own an EV especially if driving regular, these high level 350kWh according to the site June 2023 pricing, 69p kWh which is still cheaper than the Instavolt 85p kWh for power up to 50 kWH only. Free chargers whilst slow 7 kWh are usually on courts that have limited time allowed e.g 4 hours. However it won't be long before these 350kWh chargers hit ridiculous pricing probably £1kWh or more in the near future due to running costs. The biggest issue with EV is the infrastructure simply isn't there at the moment to make them viable, again unless you can charge it right outside your home. Many individuals e.g apartments/flats could potentially be at a higher risk of being left out EV charging. Even if charging units were put around flats. They wouldn't be classed as home charging points, which means higher charging tariffs by the companies who supply them. I was talking to my mate who works in one of the used car dealerships and he was telling me, more people are now giving up their EV cars and going back to petrol, because public charging just makes it more expensive and time consuming than petrol. The only way I see EV's being the future, is when it's possible to charge them as quick as to fill up your car, and the price of electric comes down massively.

I don't know 69p cheaper than some places, when I had my EV car, I've gone back to Petrol Instavolt chargers can charge up to 85p per kwh.... however unless you can get in the position of home charging. It can cost you more to electrically charge than fuel up a petrol in the long run.

There is an awful lot of infrastructure there to charge a maximum of 36 cars, I dare not think how much co2 is produced to manufacture the batteries and panels and maintain them. The fuel station I go to has 12 pumps is a 1/4 the size of that place and I estimate each pump could fuel around 10 cars an hour so easily over 100 cars an hour and the ev's will be returning 3 times as often to refuel. How long will they take to fill there? I dont know is it an hour or 2? Its not the future, an alternative fuel for the combustion engine will be the future and car manufacturers are increasing in numbers agreeing with this.

Yes the staff were very helpful there. I wasn't sure on the charging speeds of the e-C4. I thought it was 150kW peak, but it was 100kW. The chap looked up the charging curve for the car so we could see it was performing exactly as it should do.

Solar panels last 25-30 years. The size of this forecourt isn't any different to a normal out of town petrol station. EVs aren't "green". If you want green transport, you need to walk or use a bike or maybe go back to riding a horse. But they ARE greener than ICE vehicles and do not produce tailpipe emissions. If you can charge from home (and you accept the inherent fire risk that comes with an EV) then they can be an option for some people, but if you have to use these new very expensive charging forecourts more than once or twice a year then get a petrol hybrid, you’ll soon realise how much you missed filling up in 60secs flat and getting on with your day ! 😁

You are totally wrong in your statement. Both Sweden and the US emergency services report that pro rata they are called out to 20x ice fires. In September I did around 1200 miles in my EV, including a few days away in North Yorkshire. During the month I used expensive public charging 4 times, in total I spent £71 on charging my car, so that works out around 7p per mile about half the cost of my ice car. I live in a rural location around 8 mile from my nearest petrol station, to fuel my ice car on a Sunday evening ready for Monday morning it took a total of 38 minutes and used 1.5 litres of petrol, my EV took 60 seconds to plug in overnight and I had a ‘full tank’ ready for the morning.

You’ve swallowed all the old fossil fuel industry propaganda my friend. EV’s are NOT more likely to catch fire, they are LESS likely to although I grant you a fire in an EV is more difficult to put out. Neither do they have petrol tanks which in a fire are at huge risk of devastating explosions. And I bet on a long journey you do not just stop for 60secs - granted, filling up is quicker with fuel but what do you do then? Park your car somewhere and head off for a loo break and a coffee. Or you bloody well should do if you’ve just driven 200miles! EV’s just charge while you do those things. It’s a different mindset and once you’ve got your head round that you will understand. I’ll never go back to ICE. I don’t miss the huge maintenance bills nor the £80 every 2 weeks to fill up. Rather it stay in my pocket and not BP etc

Every study into the fire risk has shown ICE vehicles are 20 more likely to catch on fire. One study even said over 200 times! I genuinely don't miss filling up an ICE vehicle at all. In the majority of times I welcome the break while I fill my EV as I've been driving for long enough. You soon get used to the new way - and I've always had slow charging EVs. Many newer EVs charge extremely fast, particularly the 800V models.
