A lot of molds didn't break but were probably tossed out when factories moved and Hasbro/Takara simply didn't feel like paying the storage cost on them anymore. This happened to TONS of 80s Joe molds.

Scott Neitlich of Spector Creative said a lot of the molds get used as boat anchors after the toy companies are done with them and I don't doubt it. 🤣 It is sad if some of the molds are truly lost forever though.

I think the reissues aren't selling well because they are ridiculously over-priced. I was considering buying some of the Beast Wars reissues but they were $30 for deluxes! I never saw any reissues on clearance, I wish I did! And no I didn't want the wolf guy or Retrax. There's no reason for these toys to be so expensive. It's not like we are buying original new old stock of G1 toys. I really hope this movie line continues and Hasbro reissues Galvatron. Takara reissued him but the color was more lavender than the dark purple he had. The Galvatron toy is already not the most accurate, but better colors would help. I didn't even think about Astrotrain. He is one of my favorite Transformers, but having him in more accurate colors would definitely be great. That is a shame about all those molds being lost. I hope some can be redone or at least preserve the toys somehow. Maybe we have to rely on collectors for that and not the companies.

An accurate Astro train would make sense for the movie reissues that and devastator mold was used recently so maybe that in accurate movie colours could work. But they gotta look at how the pricing works cause the reissues always end up at clearance and that’s how people get them and it warns shelf’s.

Another issue is that a lot of these never hit the actual stores. Walmart's shipping is notorious for damaging "collectors" packaging. I would probably impulse buy it if i see it in stores. But out of sight, out of mind. Plus all the instant "sold out" when new product hits. There are ways to fix the problems, but im not sure retailers want to fix it.

The "Retro" line is what finally got me to buy G1 toys. I want as many as possible. Aside from just wanting them, I think it's important to preserve stuff like this. Things like this and video games can just be instantly lost forever because of a corporation not taking precautions. The code for the second and third "Silent Hill" games are only in the "gold" stage because Konami didn't save it, and the team for the re-masters couldn't properly code what was missing. If something like the original Rattrap and Terrorsaur figures can essentially be remade, why not the Dinobots or combiners, two things which are the biggest sellers among the franchise? This video seems a little bit too negative and spelling 'doom' for the line far too early. Saying that new fans brought in from the movies 'just don't care' about G1 reissues just isn't a blanket statement you can make without some real proof. You talk about Hound going on sale on Pulse, but all four of the Retro figures sold out multiple times on both Walmart and Hasbro Pulse, and Hound is currently sold out at Walmart's site. That's a mold that was only reissued one time, so people certainly focused on that compared to the Seekers. Hot Rod and Hound being big sellers shows that people do want these figures in the cartoon colors, and I hope that means Hasbro and/or Takara will actually bother to look at those molds that are in need of a bit of repair or lost.

Then wouldn’t people want it to look as close as possible to the original? Isn’t this the whole point of G1 Reissues I want the Original versions of the guys NOT WITH TOON COLORS, that’s the entire reason why I bought them, but now if I want a G1 hound I have to go on eBay and pay hundreds of dollars to get it, I get there are people who like these, I really do, but they aren’t for me, I can’t believe we aren’t getting a vintage Dinobot or Tarantulas because of this, for a 40th anniversary batch of reissues I really want them to revert back to normal Again I get there are people who really like these, and I don’t doubt it, but when I’m trying to build an OG G1 collection and these won’t match, this REALLY stings…

I would have bought Beast Wars reissues... IF I SAW ANY! I got a Tigatron and found a Rattrap at Winners. I'd buy Astrotrain in movie colors... and I might grab Thundercracker to experience the mold. I think a re-cast of the Dinobots would be a great HasLab project.

Here's something I don't get. There has been an explosion of G1 knockoffs lately on sites like Temu of highly sought after characters like the Dinobots, and they're actually really good quality. How is it that these companies are able to create cost effective recreations of these molds? I realize that there are different pressures on a company like Hasbro but it seems like they should be *more* capable than knockoff companies, not less.

I had this strange idea for a retro transformers line. What if they were to make G1 transformers, and modern day transformers, and kind of merge them together. Like, a Optimus Prime, in retro packaging, colors, quality, and even stickers and print, die cast parts, but have him be given amazing articulation. It’s just a thought.

That's a dream come true. The "missing link" Optimus Prime comes out in March. He looks like the original toy, but has a lot more articulation. It's being imported from Japan. You can get only the cab or you get the cab and trailer. The trailer mold was recreated.

TJ, just because a reissue line has less figures in it, doesn't mean we've lost any. (Yet...) Encore was to give us popular ones again including ones that hadn't been reissued yet, and the Walmart 2018 line was light on figures because a majority of them had already been reissued so many times over.

Only thing from G1 I saw as a kid was the movie, so it's really just important characters from that I'd have any interest in buying retro figures for. Already bought a Hot Rod, since it comes in his original, glorious *PINK*, but apart from that I don't know what other retro toy I'd want. Maybe Ultra Magnus, but I don't think that's likely to happen.

Honestly I would rather see more Beast Wars reissues and branch out more to other toy lines outside of G1. I'd love to see the Japanese exclusive figures get an American release if at all possible. I know some figures can't be done in the U.S. because of stricter toy safety laws but I don't think that's the case with all Japanese exclusives. I'd also love to see more reissues like the Bumblee they did or 10th Anniversary Optimus Primal and Megatron where they're painted and remolded to be more accurate to the cartoon. It's usually just the heads that get molds but they look so good with the cartoon accurate faces. Also with Beast Wars Transmetals there isn't much you can do with a modern figure to make them more show accurate and articulated except just give them better face sculpts. Silverbolt and TM2 Cheetor are. The only ones who could really benefit from an entirely new mold cause Silverbolts wings aren't as articulated as they could be due to his gimmick and TM2 Cheetor is just the worst figure in the entire toy line. What little articulation that figure does have is basically useless and he can't even hold his own weapon cause of how his hands work.

I’d love to see the inverse of this: G1 toy-accurate repaints/retools of current-year Generations releases. Give me Brawn with claw hands and a visor face! Give me Jazz with door wings! Give me Megatron with extra chest detailing and his weird turret thing! Give me yellow eyes Optimus Prime! And most importantly… Give me Rumble and Frenzy as they were meant to be- red and blue!

We had a door wing Jazz over a decade ago with Reveal the Shield Jazz. We were supposed to have gotten a yellow eyed Optimus recently, but when early pics dropped for the Earthrise figure, people balked so bad that Hasbro's designers relented and painted the eyes blue...but without painting the face silver. 🤨🧐 We've had Red Rumble & Blue Frenzy twice already (Titans Return and Siege+Generations Selects), three times if you count Takara exclusive Transformers United UN20 Rumble & Frenzy.

I wouldn't be so quick to say that movie-era fans don't care about the G1 reissues. The first thing I did after getting into Transformers with the 2007 movie is go back and watch the G1 cartoon, and it really made me want to get some G1 figures of some of my favourites like the Minibots and Springer. So having the reissues has been pretty handy in avoiding the extortionate aftermarket prices on some of these characters - my Minibot collection is made up entirely of reissues, and I'm digging the look of this Hound who was another favourite of mine. So yeah, I think it would be a shame too to see the reissues end - not just for the selfish reason of "I want to keep getting them" but also because it's nice (and is some cases, even important) to preserve things where possible.

As a manager of toys at Walmart, I think the vintage reissues do sale well(excluding Retax) but my issue is that I get so much in stock. They sell well for a month or two but then they just sit on the shelf til they’re marked down.

Thats an issue I see with the Walmart I work at, and I'm just a cart pusher there. I mean we still have Legacy Year 1 Wave 1 stuff on shelf and it's understandably frustrating as I've been wanting to pick up Hot Shot and Starscream. The only thing of the current Wave (Legacy Evolution Wave 3(?) we gotten was a Blitzwing PR and 2 Armada Megatrons) 86 reissue Starscream is currently shelfwarming hard.

With today's technology, it surprises me that Hasbro simply does not reverse-engineer ALL the G1 Transformers! Or at least the ones that fans want the most, like the G1 Dinobots, in these days, anything is possible with the right technology, maybe Hasbro does not want to risk it and just want to go forward with new Transformers molds. shame, because G1 Transformers still have a solid fan base to this day. Maybe it's too much of a gamble for them. But at least I was able to grab the reissue of Hound, my very first Transformer I ever got, still have my original toy as well.

Cost and the same molds coming out over and over are definitely big issues, but also as a fan who focuses on G1...I kind of feel like the current lines are eating the lunch for G1 reissues, and scratching the same nostalgic itch. I got most of my reissues during the early waves of them in the 00s, and they felt magical because they were best representation I could find of my favorite characters. Now, damn near every G1 character has a modern figure, and there are precious few reissues I would really like to have...most of which are confirmed lost(looking at you, Wheeljack). At this point, would I even want G1 Dinobot reissues for example? They used to be a grail of mine...but now I honestly don't know, because I have an entire shelf dedicated to the SS86 collection. I'm just not sure there's much of a place for the G1 reissues anymore, except for the biggest names(which also happen to often be the best toys) and the most hardcore of collectors.

How is it surprising that G1 reissues don't sell? They've NEVER sold well. I remember Toys R Us having shelves and shelves of them not selling, even for $5 each. The only ones that I recall didn't go on sale was Optimus, Magnus, Hot Rod and Rodimus. All the rest from Ricochet/Stepper to Skids were clogging shelves. Sideswipe was clogging shelves in Kay Bee. Perceptor, the Insecticons and Blaster were clogging Walmart shelves. Then they did them again and they clogged shelves then too. While they're not clogging shelves now, they're almost immediately on sale instead and seemingly only available online. Yet there's a very vocal part of the fandom in the extreme minority that praise G1 reissues every time they're done. However, these recent "The Movie" redecos are cool since at least they're trying to do something different. It's just that I've been done with G1 since I picked up all those reissues while on sale at Toys R Us and Kay Bee back then. I got them, was nostalgic for a few minutes while I stickered them up and then didn't want them anymore. As far as the BW reissues go, I have almost all of the originals already. The ones I still need, want or would like to replace haven't been or are never going to be done. I'd love a new Magnaboss to get a Silverbolt that doesn't break. I'd love a grey TMII Prowl II that doesn't have flaking chrome. While I have every version of the TM Airazor mold (except that beautiful blue and white prototype that was on Ebay for years without selling) but if they did one, I'd get her just for the hell of it. I have the blue one, the pink one, the Fox Kids one, the Metals one and the Armada one. Magnaboss would sell. Tripredacus would sell. Magmatron would sell. Galvatron would sell. Big Convoy...if priced well might sell. Dinobot 2, TM2 Cheetor and Tripredacus Agent, Scourge, Sonar, Night Glider, Polar Claw and so many others like that might sell well if only they got around to them. Instead we got another Cheetor, another Primal and Megatron and Retrax amongst others. Cybershark, Wolfang and K-9 were cool though. So just the wrong choices when it comes to the BW reissues.

I could never find a reissue of G1 Soundwave / Buzzsaw anywhere when it was initially released. Same for the Perceptor reissue. Availability has been hit-or-miss for these reissues. I hope Hasbro rectifies this for the 40th and 50th anniversaries of the G1 line. Things have a way of coming around again, and I believe there will be enough of a demand one day soon to warrant Hasbro casting new molds from laser scans of old figures.

I disagree with a couple points. Hound has sold out over and over. They may have reached saturation, so it's slowed. Demand has been high for retro reissues, and I'm glad to see it.

On Temu and other Chinese knock-off sites have all of the Dinobots, Sideswipe and Mirage for sure… where did they get the molds? Can Hasbro just buy some from the knock-off people who probably bought stolen molds of course, but it is what it is.

At the 17:00 mark, you show a list of classic legendary Transformers characters that G1 fans should pretty much love to own as a part of their collections that have molds that are reportedly not available. Yet, be it Autobot cars or the Dinobots or even Shockwave we can go online and buy KOs not made by Hasbro/Tomy/Takara, and have these toys complete in box with paperwork and all accessories. So, if a bootleg company can make them, AND make a profit doing so in not large quantities, then why can't H/T/T reverse-engineer them or do whatever the bootleggers did to recreate these valuable molds? --- I don't think it's a can't do it, it's more of a want thing... maybe they simply make more money pushing the new stuff.

Maybe at 45th or 50th anniversary, some of these G1 characters will "suddenly" be made available again, they "just found them". Takara was doing reissues long before the ToysRUs stuff came out, and between the Encore and collection lines, you'd think that they would learn to care for their expensive molds. So someday I think we'll see the Insecticons again, as well as the Prowl mold, Ironhide mold, OP's trailer, and maybe even a Megatron gun too, maybe just in Japan though, sadly.

There are several factors at play. Hasbro is a publicly traded company; its ultimate goal is maximizing stock value, which isn't true for private companies. Hasbro is also a giant company with a lot of bureaucracy; extensive bureaucracy can add *substantially* to expenses. Big companies also tend to move at much slower rates, which can cost both time and additional money. While Hasbro may be a big company with a ton of resources, resources are *always* limited and Hasbro does a lot of things beyond remaking obscure 1980s toy molds. Bootleg companies don't have to worry about rights issues or licensing concerns. Etc.

@@BainesMkII I guarantee you that between my university studies and professional business career, you're not mentioning anything that I've never heard of. - The point is that for a company that regularly cashes in on 1980's nostalgia, often from those of us that have been supporting the franchise for 40-ish years ( and some of us even pay big bucks to go to their conventions and join fanclubs ), we're being told that "sorry, you can't get a reissue that just might complete your collection because of the mold...", when clearly the mold is out there, someone's making the toys, and especially after H/T/T has been charging the prices that they do on the toys they sell, and doing things like reissuing Starscream for the 20th time and charging over 50 bucks for an Optimus reissue sans the trailer and so many accessories, that bluntly, H/T/T owes it to their fans.

The general perception among serious collectors is reissues don't carry that same vintage value (and in some cases, quality) as the originals did. They are chiefly bought to be played with (as toys) and to perhaps allow kids to experience the design first hand (as the originals are simply too precious to be messed with in the capacity they were intended ~ which are glorified puzzle-like toy soldiers made for miniaturised war).

Because they're reverse engineered from the original tooling. Break the toy down into it's individual parts, use that to create a mold. Hasbro can do the same, it's how we still get Soundwave reissues, but to also fix the mold for modern materials and safety standards can make it just as expensive as a brand new mold, and Hasbro can make more money on a new mold that could produce 5 or 6 different toys than reissuing an old one with a single use.

Well they must have remolded prime's trailer for the new Missing link version. I'm really surprised they refuse to take advantage of these toys leaving it to KO companies to do it. Which are pretty decent. But it's just money they are losing and forcing fans into buying the KOs. And to be fair the KOs are super cheap. Cheaper than an original or reissue on eBay, but they still run in the $30 to $150 range. If these KO companies can recast molds for some of these figures I don't see why a multi billion dollar company can't, unless they just don't care. And seeing how they have been acting over the last decade with bad distribution and ignoring what fans of their properties want (GI Joe retro), and now leasing the rights to other toy companies to make their properties, I fall to they just don't care and want to because a IP holder as opposed to producer and creator.

I would buy the reissue line if it wasn't just Starscream if it wasn't 27 star screens at all five Walmart within 100 miles of me and it was actually different versions of the reissue line believe me I would be all in but there's no new reissues it's all Starscream it pisses me off because everybody else, anyways love what you do but it's all Starscream nothing else right now hey Walmart don't by 5 million starscream's by 5000 spread amount that way they would sell and then you could get the next wave in sorry I didn't mean to yell that your servant Warren

This is weird. Their are so many third party Transformers being made but they can’t justify making G1 replicas? They gave so little articulation, they should be easy and cheap to make. I don’t understand.

I think the G1 reissue line is a huge cost sink that should stay a Pulse exclusive collector line. Everywhere I go I see these figures warming shelves while at the same time Legacy Voyagers are always out of stock.
