I have the memcard pro for ps1, it's super amazing but it doesn't have write protect. I have a freepsxboot on card 1-1 and that's the default for ps1 booting, but if I forget to change to 1-2 or higher then it's possible to accidentally overwrite the freepsxboot one. Such an obvious feature they should've added

I feel like one could use a redundant storage technique, like how RAID encodes things, using two microSD cards semi-separated powerwise/etc Photographers do that with their cameras and I think that's really smart/wise personally. ;PPPP

This is called bank switching. It was a method used to get old 8 bit computers to use more memory than allowed by the CPUs address bus. A 16 bit address can only address up to ~64k bytes worth of memory. But if you do the same thing as the memory card in the video, but instead replace your finger-and-button with an electrical signal from the CPU or another chip, you can now make a program to switch to another bank of 64k memory. You lose a bit of speed because it takes time to switch from one memory chip to another but not you can have tons more memory!
@jlco

Isn't that basically adding an out-of-band signal to your memory addressing?

I was just wondering if this could be done. Having to hit a button for something smart enough to have several different virtual cards seemed odd to me. And GameCube doesn't split the saves between cards, so speed shouldn't be a problem after you first load up the game.

I still prefer a wii with rv loader. Its basically the same software expirence as a really decked out and mod chiped gamecube just way easier and cheaper
@abbasraza2493
@abbasraza2493 Жыл бұрын
The easiest and cheapest option would be just dolphin on a okay laptop or PC. But a Wii would be the cheapest hardware option. Modding old hardware is the fun part about modding old hardware tho, so looking for alternatives kinda kills the vibe for me. Yes I can play all these games with true widescreen patches, 60 fps patches, 8K resolution, deinterlacing forced on everything and a modern controller, but that real hardware feel will be missing. You really have to find what makes old games fun for you.

@Minecraftzocker135
@Minecraftzocker135 Жыл бұрын
@@abbasraza2493 actually if you want a separate device im not sure if a Wii wouldn't actually be cheaper, sure nothing can beat using a device you already have tho. I mean there is plenty of modding you can do with the Wii, you can literally build a handheld out of it, so no definitly no vibe kill.
@abbasraza2493
@abbasraza2493 Жыл бұрын
@@Minecraftzocker135 Different people different vibes. I personally play GC games with a GC controller, on a CRT on the original resolution but emulated and internally rendered at higher res. I've also never seen the point of playing console games on handheld and likewise, handheld games on consoles/Normal PCs. But again, to each their own. Play your PS2 on your phone, play PSP in VR, play game gear on a 4K TV. That's just the best thing about modding and emulation tho. Power to the player.

The lights on that first one reminded me of some memory cards I had for my first console. I was a PC gamer in the 90s and in the mid 00s I got a PSone, around the same time the PS2 was coming out, but Blockbuster was still selling PSone games. They also sold these memory cards that you switched sides by pressing like 3 buttons on the controller. They were effectively 2 cards in 1 and I was so fascinated by that lol

So this was actually a common hack used for memory cards, so the console itself could only address so many "blocks" on a card, and would get really fussy if it saw more blocks that were actually there, so some manufacturers of memory cards, whether it be PlayStation or GameCube, got around this by making a memory card that could switch between chunks of itself, basically changing where the starting address was on the storage drive, which effectively tricked the console into thinking you were just taking out one card and putting in a new one, when all you were actually doing was changing where in the allocation table you were addressing. I had one of these for my PlayStation, not that particular model, and nowhere close to that large obviously, but yeah, it's a neat way to get around a hardware limitation.
