The Israel Lobby was not yet quite as powerful when he was in office, and that is why he can call Israel an apartheid state, which is stunning coming from an American president. Today, such words could never be uttered by a President, nor a congressman, nor a senator. Such a person would be professionally destroyed today.

you didn't actually pay attention and listen. He was very clear that there is nothing even remotely like apartheid in Israel. The apartheid is in the occupied territories of Palestine, not in Israel. And plenty of US Politicians and Zionists admit that, and say it's a problem. What else beloved Jimmy said, which you probably just skimmed over, was that the "right of return" cannot be granted. That little bit right there is the most profoundly zionist statement that anyone can make.
@MrAschiff
@MrAschiff 9 ай бұрын
@@taylorbarrett384 There's no such thing as Palestine today. Before the creation of the state of Israel, the region was called Palestine, and it had a flag with a Jewish star. The Arabs had a chance to have a homeland next to Israel, but they rejected the Jewish homeland. Five Arab armies attacked Israel, and Israel won the war. Jews have been living in Palestine longer than the Arabs have. Whether the idea of a Jewish homeland came from atheists or not. they knew that the Jewish people had been living there. Islam existed in the sixth century in Saudi Arabia, where Arabs came from. There is no apartheid, Jimmy wrote, Israel: Peace Not Apartheid, suggesting Israel was an apartheid state. Benny Morris changed his view on the history of Israel. There is no such thing as the Palestinian territories.

In my opinion the best US president in modern history. I know it sounds extreme, but the world would look completely different if he'd been given a second term. In particular, no reaganomics or trickle down economics, no expansion of the war on drugs, a stronger EPA and an earlier start at preventing climate change and breaking up the status quo of the fossil fuel industry, no consolidation of power in the presidency, less regime change, no al qaeda, less corruption, less unemployment, a stronger social security budget. Not to mention all the other negative policies later presidents did due to the cultural impact of Reagan's tenure.

The host starts out the discussion laying off a completely decontextualized argument. It completely ignores what prompts these people to fight. It's as if these people just wake up and feel their life would be in vain if they don't go hunt some Jews..not that they've been living under a vicious, humiliating occupation for decades. Daily scenes in the West Bank--even long before this interview--includes scenes where 18-year-olds (that's IDF soldiers) slap and humiliate fully grown adults/elderly, where settlers circle houses for hours if not days scaring people from getting out or scaring them out of their houses and villages for good, where people going to their 30-minute-drive jobs take it in 4 or 5 hours...and these are the nice parts.

For starters. Israel is not an Apartheid state. The Palestinians do not live in Israel, and they are not citizens. There are two million Arabs that live in Israel, and they vote and serve in the Knesset and in the Judicial system. They are not required to serve in the military. How many Jews live in Muslim countries. There are roughly twenty-five Muslim countries that surround Israel, which is the size of New Jersey. Where's your complaint about Iran, which is being run by Mullahs thanks to Jimmy's weakness. These Mullahs kill gays and women who seek their rights. Same with the men who want a secular state. Libya imports Africans for slavery. Saudi Arabia, like Iran, has strict Sharia Law. Israel has made peace with 6 Arab countries, four of which came in the Abraham Accords. Obviously, they see Israel, which has made great contributions to the world in its 75 years of existence, then the Muslims have in the last 1,000 years.

I cannot agree on your analysis of the Palestinians situation. It was magnanimous on the part Palestinians to agree on the 1967 borders. It’s Israel that has shunned this UN mandate. If the US was a Honest Broker this matter would have been settled long before. If Israel had not adopted a superior attitude of a Conqueror and suppressed the rights of the Palestinians,this conflict could have been avoided. As the leading and dominant Superpower the US has failed to keep and maintain Peace in the Middle East.,Infact it has contributed to the destruction of Law & order and Peace. It has also encouraged corruption of the Arabs .

When it comes the character one of our best presidents . Just think if we had been successful in rescuing just some of the Iranian hostages back in 79 this guy would have won by a Landslide! About the most important thing to remember about the 1980 election is that even though both Carter and Reagan had very different views on things, just like the majority of people that have run for office in this country, they had character and they were good men we're good men. I never felt like everything's going to hell. Until 2016

@MrAschiff

Yes, they are. Israel has made numerous peace offers to the Palestinians. AIPAC supports a two-state solution, except that the Palestinians have rejected every offer that's been made to them. Just ask Bill Clinton, who said he broke his back to create a Palestinian state, only for Yassir Arafat to turn him down. This rejection of peace by the Arabs has been going on since the 1930s. In 1948, the Jews and the Arabs were offered a state side-by-side, Israel accepted, but the Palestinian Arabs rejected a Jewish state next to them. Five Arab armies attacked the nascent Jewish country, and Israel won. It's the Palestinians who've rejected peace.

When Anwar Sadat signed a peace treaty with Israel in 1979, Arafat’s PLO called for Egypt to be boycotted. The Arab states adopted that boycott and prevented Cairo from participating in the Arab League from 1977 until 1989. Most Arab ambassadors in Egypt were recalled and Arabs visiting Egypt were considered either traitors or spies.

how did this america slip away under our nose?? This is america to the core. Discussions over the table but strong leadership and call it out for what it is. Carter touched me when he answered, I did more for israel and helped them more than anything, then he said he support isarael within the "legal border of israel" wow! The talking point and even with this type of specific detailed part it literally sounds like it was yesterday. I was dumfounded when I realized in todays information world how is it possible that I just found out about palestine and this was going on for the last 75 years. I really want to know what else is hidden from us, and what is really history, and what are we?? this is so troubling.

@@vitolazlo5767 You are very naive. Carter was sabotaged by the entire political system. He had set a precedent that no politician in either party could live with. He was honest. You have to remember that Carter was elected because he was an honest politician in an era of Watergate where Nixon was thrown out of office and Ford, incredibly corruptly, pardoned him. Pretty similar to today where Trump is a flat out crook, should be tossed in jail, but then got pardoned. Anyway, high oil prices are what killed Carter and the shenanigans going on with OPEC and US politicians were huge at the time. Remember that George Bush I was the head of the CIA and that things were happening like Reagan/Bush treasonously and illegally selling arms to Iran fund an illegal insurrection by the Contras. Anyway, oil prices were fixed high to sabotage the Carter administration with high inflation rates - and it worked. And both parties were complicit as, I said, the last thing politicians of either party wanted was an honest politician to become a success. And, of course, the incredibly ignorant, gulllible and flat out stupid American public bought the whole thing and then elected the most anti-working class president in American history, Reagan, to succeed him. And you see how that worked out, unions destroyed in America, globalization destroying the working class in America and a zillion laws allowing things like LBOs which allowed the theft of worker pension funds, CEOs being allowed to own stock in their own companies which led to millions of unnecessary layoffs over the years and CEOs being allowed to sit on each other's Boards, which led to a hundred fold increase in CEO salaries, the defanging of the SEC and many others. That was all under Reagan, who you probably love, while Carter was doing the opposite, which you, of course, for some inane reason, hate.

Very mixed feelings seeing this today. I see a lot of good will and idealism in Jimmy Carter. But looking back it seems like it failed terribly. The US should have handled this tougher from the beginning. It was obvious that apartheid on the one side and terrorism on the other would be a ticking timebomb. What is currently happening is just making it worse. The US should take its role seriously and bring order in this terrible mess. Which unevitably means being tough towards both sides.
