Perhaps the Olympics needs to move from a "single location" to "multi-location" where a location hosts a group of events. The Olympics become more of a Time period that is going on at many locations around the world. This could reduce the need to build lots of new facilities that are not getting reused after the Olympics are over.

I guess the best way to deal with it would be to create an Olympic cycle and merge all the world championships all across the world as part of the events of the games.

There are solutions to both the economic problems and the geopolitical problems. Maybe we should examine the concept of building a static winter Olympic location, and a static summer Olympic location. Build the facilities once, not over and over again. In the off season, the venues would be a valuable training centre, and would be in constant use. Obviously real estate costs in Tokyo, Paris, Rome etc is prohibitive but not every community's real estate is price prohibitive. And if real estate is cheaper, often construction costs are considerably lower. Also, if the Olympics were in a permanent venue, Authoritarian leaders, Dictators etc would not have their regime legitimized by hosting the biggest sporting event in the world. Just a thought??? If we really aant to solve the problems, we need to think differently than the historical past.

A few things. Having the Olympics being in a single location would be a disaster. No matter what location you picked to host thoughtheir, Geopolitical enemies would just boycott the gameswhich they always do, but by holding it in one city forever, your cutting off. A lot of countries from playing. The most commonly floated around city for the idea would be los angeles Let's use that as an example China and Russia and North koreawill never participate again. And I'll slowly be seen as more and more american than a eventually die. Also The olympics need to be held in authoritarian countries every once in a while Because if they don't "Legitimized Their regime" Then countries like North Korea in China and Russia. We'll see the Olympic Games as being Western, not global, and stop participate.

LA 1984 was the last games to actually not end in the Red.. it wasn’t great profits.. but it was helped by having most of the venue’s in place. I expect the same for the 2028 games too. The biggest financial issues are building venues that don’t already exist.. worse yet, as can be seen from Rio and a few other’s aftermaths.. venues that will never be used again. The Summer games has the most venues.. but the Winter also has some issues too. 2030 still has no host listed even though 2032 does. Weather is rough.. My fondest memories are from the first 2 winter games I saw.. 1980 in Lake Placid (not all that far from where I grew up) and 1984 in Sarajevo.. Sadly, I could not watch the 1980 summer games for memories of the US boycott. I hear about climate change all the time.. though last year, would have been great for out here in Salt Lake.. We’ll have to see.. I do agree.. Build a few venues that can host well and rotate.. May 1 main winter home and 3-4 summer homes that can be rotated. The most difficult part for South America and Australia are the summer games are actually played in their winter seasons. Still, make the games sites regular stops on the World Cup tours.. and the venues will get maintained.

Part of the reason is they have to have so many stupid sports... sports most people don't care about and absolutely having to have women equivalent for all those stupid sports.
