The Game Gear version of Shinobi remains one of my favourite games on the system. I still own the cartridge, and it's a great side-scrolling platformer for the time.
In terms of objective, players must rescue a group of fellow ninjas who have been brainwashed by the nefarious Neo Zeed. You'll need to defeat each ninja in turn to break the spell, then once the whole squad is assembled, you'll launch an assault on Neo City and deal with the criminal organisation once and for all.
Each of the ninja you rescue have their own distinct weapons, skills and magic power:
- Red: sword; earthquake magic that destroys enemies and scenery
- Pink: Bomb; walk on ceilings; magic that blinds enemies and illuminates dark places
- Yellow: power shot; water walking; magic shield
- Blue: grappling hook; swing on certain objects; magic which turns him into a mystic tornado
- Green: shuriken; double-jump with shuriken scatter; magic which causes player to explode and do heavy damage
I recorded a longplay back in 2014, but the video was in native 160 x 144 resolution (10:9). Since this is one of the games where the art teams took the screen stretch into consideration, this new video has been scaled to 4:3 aspect ratio to ensure the sprites are correctly proportioned.

This is an amazing game. It feels like a sequel to Revenge of Shinobi but on a Game Gear. The gameplay is fantastic, the multiple ninjas mechanics are awesome, the sound effects are impressive and the music is incredible. Love how they reuse the boss theme from Revenge of Shinobi too. I would love to see this game on modern consoles.

It's always nice to see GG Shinobi get some attention. I'm remaking this for the Mega Drive, so hopefully people will have another version of this great game to play one day :)

The first game that I felt truly immersed into a game, love everything about this. The game play is class, music is unbelievable, story and mechanics of multiple ninjas is awesome. Better than the mega drive versions IMO

Yeah, there were different ninjas in different colors. Red ninja was the standard ninja. He rescued his friends. Pink/purple ninja could walk on the roof and throw bombs. Yellow ninja could walk on water, had kinda water-ha-do-ken and a big shuriken. Blue ninja had a grappling-hook. And green ninja I forgot. So you could use rescued ninjas for the next levels. That was really cool actually.

Listen to the music on the highway level 1-2 when Shinobi is climbing the building. It’s the same music from the introduction of “Revenge of Shinobi” when Shinobi is listening to his master dying words.

The track is called "Long Distance" and yes, it was originally from Revenge of Shinobi. The track "Terrible Beat" which plays during the boss fights is the same as well :)

I love how nonsensical some of the rooms in Neo City are. It makes you wonder what state the architects were in when they designed the place. Architect "So this is going to be the room with the appearing & disappearing blocks and attachment hooks. And this is the room with the water-pipes that are designed with openings so that water spouts out of these at periodic intervals." Neo Zeed boss "Okay, that is nice and all but how are regular people going to cross these rooms, let alone live or work here? This is going to be a city after all." Architect "Live or work?". Or that Neo Zeed, despite obviously being terrorists, actually got the permits from the local government to build their own city in what probably is Japan. Joking aside, this still looks like a nice game to play.
