Yeah...that screen was ASSSSSSSSSSSSSSS. LCD's in general did not become halfway decent until the mid 2000's. If you replace the screen on a GG with a modern one, you get MUCH better battery life, and most of the games still hold up today. 2D pixel art holds up much better than 3D. You can get quite a lot of GG games on the 3DS Virtual Console too. I have Defenders of Oasis on my 3DS...used to have it for the Game Gear back in the day and had fond memories of it.

I'm watching the whole series in order and I'm surprised about Joe's *apparent* (we all know Joe and Dave are the Sultans of Sarcasm) evolution (not a change: just an evolution) on his opinion about the GG over the course of these 7 years. I had mine back in 1992, enjoyed, loved caressed and finally destroyed it (confound those shitty capacitors!). Bought it back last year (with brand new capacitors... On the Z80: I helped dismantle one of Zilog's two Nampa, Idaho fabrication plants. I wish I would of held on to the wafers we were able to take home but I had no idea what the Z80 was all about, hell I have no idea if the wafers I had were even related to Z80 designs. We had people from Canon come in to help us dismantle and package the 'chip printers' for shipping. I think most of it was headed to Asia. I want to say Korea, perhaps Taiwan- it was some years ago. Anyways the project was ran by some Italians, and they were super awesome, we drank a bunch of Grappa as the project winded down. Again had I know what I know today... I just wish I could of documented what happened. It was local guys like me from Nampa and an outfit that specialized in dismantling industrial places like a Zilog plant and they were out of Texas but brought in people from across the country. The Canon guys we're really nice, I used to talk to them in my ignorance and they at one point told me that the machines being shipped out of country could of been tooled to make "something" like a 386 or so. I dunno, all I know is a Z80 was mentioned and I'm rambling!

Defenders of Oasis is one of favorite old school RPGs, mostly because of how simple it is. While very cookie cutter, it does have some unique elements, such as how you level up the Genie, which is done fully by items, and each character having a special move. It’s easy and simple but the music and the grindy gameplay do something for me.

Had one of these badboys back in the day. Swapped it for a GameBoy. Not because it was crap (the battery life was atrocious) but because it was so hard to get games in Australia. Sonic Drift 1 was Japan only. Sonic Drift 2 got released worldwide, but the USA/Europe versions were labeled as "Sonic Drift", even know the rom data was the same. So the title was "Sonic Drift 2", and Dr. Robotnik was called Dr. Eggman.

Thanks to the 3DS VC introducing me to several GG games, I really enjoyed the tiny library available on the system. Happy to see Defenders of Oasis get a mention as that's a hidden RPG gem IMO, but I was a bit sad to see that the SRPGs of the system like Royal Stone, Crystal Warriors and the Shining Trio were all skipped. The Game Gear was the first system I ever actually owned when I was a kid, so this review was great. I miss my old Game Gear (traded it away years ago), and especially a game that wasn't actually shown on here, which kinda surprised me. No Shining Force 2: Sword of Hajya? I played the hell out of that game. I'm really glad it's one of the ones that got a 3DS E-shop port. Otherwise, I didn't even realize there were so many good games on the GG (I was especially surprised by Sylvan Tale and Batman Returns)! Goes to show how little I had in the way of access to magazines of the time (other than Sega Visions) that reviewed many of the games on it. Great work guys.

Given it's entirely based on the Master System from just a few years prior, and is even slightly better tech-wise, it's actually impressive how much they were able to shrink it down to even that form factor. But that plus the backlit LCD screen is why it's power consumption on batteries is so rotten. That about sums up nearly all laptops from the time also.

The Game Gear was the first system I bought 100% with my own money, and the first system I ever had buyers remorse from. I worked all summer cutting yards (which also meant spending the summer sick as I am extremely allergic to grass), and had just enough to buy this (actually my parents pitched in a few bucks - I did not have enough to cover taxes). It came with Sonic The Hedgehog, which I was excited about - it was my first Sega platform, and Sonic is cool, right? And this thing was in color! It was going to squash that ugly Gameboy! Sadly, Sonic ended up being the hardest game I ever played, and it was not fun at all (unlike the Genesis version, which is a blast). Much like Mega Man, it felt like the levels were meant for a larger screen, and it had poor play controls and didn't run that fast. The first boss battle was almost impossible due to poor hit detection and sloppy controls. I never have seen anything other than Green Hills Zone. What was worse was the selection of games I had available to me. I don't recall Toys R Us ever carrying more than 20 games for it, and I did not care for any of those titles. I think in the end we had Sonic and Castle of Illusion, which my brother bought. I thought for sure I would be able to rent games, but the local video store was Nintendo only store, and carried NES, SNES and Gameboy only. Many of the games I was interested in never made it out of Japan. In the end, I had a Super Nintendo and that was where I put most of my game money. I mean, Streets of Rage for the Game Gear, or Final Fantasy IV for the SNES? Yeah easy choice there. Sonic Dash or F-Zero? Zelda 3 or... No there was no choice there. Ninja Gaidan for the Game Gear, or Super Castlevania IV? On long trips, I normally ended up lending out my SNES and borrowing a friend's Gameboy. My brother had his Mickey Mouse on the Game Gear, I had Tetris and Zelda and Final Fantasy Adventures to entertain me. Over time, I bought two Sega platforms, this and the Saturn. Ouch. My brother bought the Genesis and the Dreamcast. Guess who got more use out of their systems? The Game Gear was such a huge disappointment, that I have absolutely refused to buy another handheld. I play games on my phone and on my tablet, but for the most part, most of my gaming is done on the Playstation or the PC (or NVidia Shield)

Sad thing is, that part of me want one, not so much for the games, but for the crazy amount of mods available. One of the most recent protects replaces the LCD screen for a faster refreshing, LED backlit screen that both fixes the ghosting but grants a HUGE increase to battery life as a result. It also features an optional VGA out, so that should yield a much sharper picture for the display out. :D but yeah, didn't know much of any games worth having on the system.

Just be careful fixing one of those things. Basically, when removing the capacitors each leg of the capacitor should pull off the solder pad like it is nothing. If you have to pull up with any kind of force, then there is the risk of a pulled pad which could equal a dead gear. A good soldering station with temperature control also helps a lot.

Game Sack Sonic 1 and 2 are the two Games I played the most on the GG never played TrippleTrouble though. Played the Sonic Chaos Game back then on the Master. Its generic but the first Games that come to mind for me thinking of the Gamegear.

Game Sack, technically not Sonic, but Tails Adventure would be interesting. It's a slower-paced Metroidvania than trying to be a Sonic when the Game Gear doesn't have dat blast processing. :P

Lucky Dime Caper was the final game I played on the Game Gear over twenty years ago, completed it as well. I didn't play a lot of games on the system, mostly just Sonic 1, Sonic 2, Sonic Chaos, Sonic Triple Trouble and one other, Columns, both Shinobi games, Star Trek: Generations and a couple of others. It was an alright system although the battery life was a pain in the backside due to how many batteries you found yourself going through with it.

So weird why the Gamegear doesn’t get more props. Even Dave was giving it some criticism for not sounding as good as the Genesis. Would the Gameboy EVER even be compared to the SNES? Nope I don’t think so. The Gamegear was far superior to the Gameboy.

So was the Atari Lynx version 2. I had all 3. The Gameboy was more like a fun toy. It has some very good games but it doesn't wow you. The PC Engine was also far better. Shame about the batteries.

i knew that tingle i felt in my sack wasnt weird, it was an Internal Game Sack Notification! lol i saw Metal Jesus Rocks talk about the Game Gear modding community and i will definitely have to get a new LCD Screen and make sure that i have a power pack, because running on batteries can suck hard with Handhelds. that being said there are quite a few exclusive games on the Game Gear that warrant collecting for it, although not that many.
