That name is interesting, due to the fact that the East Germanic word for Spearman is either Spermanna ( 𐍃𐍀𐌴𐍂𐌼𐌰𐌽𐌽𐌰 ) or gaiza/gaisamanna ( 𐌲𐌰𐌹𐍃𐌰𐌼𐌰𐌽𐌽𐌰 )

I see Spermann a lot more than Gaisamann, but that's probably because Spermann is used to describe every spearman in history. There are actually quite a few brilliant articles on ancient weapons and warriors in German on Acedemia.edu that I use somewhat frequently when I can't find an English article to base a video on.

@@AncientHistoryGuy cool, thanks! I’ve got a sneaking suspicion that Gaisa is a Latin loan word borrowed by the Goths. Love your content, bro

It could be, the word today means Air in Latvian, which is interesting. Gáe is the irish/celtic word for Spear used today. Languages are fascinating lol.

Honestly, from what I've kind of come to understand, I think that the Gaestatae were called spearmen more becasue of their skill at throwing javelins, as I think they were supposed to have been known for actually fighting with swords.

You misspelled their name in the title. They are Gaesatae, not Gaestatae.

It struck a cord when you mentioned the "Fianna" (sp?). They were apparently part of an Indo-European tradition that is found back in Biblical times in what's now Russia and Ukraine where they are known as the "Koryos.

Why aren't these boys in Total War?
@Rynewulf5 ай бұрын
Most historical mods put them in, for example the Europa Barbarorum series. Unfortunately CA has always used simplified and even movie versions of history (Rome Total War 1 infamously had Roman ninjas and bronze age ancient Egyptians)

Was about to say just that

They did, but they were called Naked Fanatics and they are available for almost all Barbarian factions except for Scythia.
