This channel is a comic info gold mine. I find myself getting digital copies of comics presented here, including this trilogy today. You guys do good work.

I love that Warren has these books open and not slabbed. He able to a fully immersive experience with a piece of history. I get why people slab their books but how fun it must be to actually open a book like this whenever you want.

Marvel really should do facsimile editions of these issues. On newsprint.
@stanlee54653 жыл бұрын
Agreed, and I think they should go back to printing a bunch of comics on newsprint! I assume it's cheaper, and I know it's the norm' now, but I always felt the heavy glossy paper was only suitable for hard bound collected series omnibuses... Or Graphic Novels....
@BigBennKlingon3 жыл бұрын
Ya newsprint would make those facsimiles they're making nowadays feel way authentic.

@Peter McMillan Ya I collected the complete Kirby run of Collector's Item Classics/Marvel's Greatest Comics reprints as well. It's the almost like reading the real thing! Only downside is there's usually 2 pages cut from each issue. Marvel Tales, on the other hand, seem to leave the spidey stories complete (at least the ones I have).

One of the first comics my mum bought for me, and VERY nostalgic. Must have been about 6? Your narration is so packed with knowledge of the time, interesting, intelligent observations and informed awareness of the creators. Just a rich, enjoyable journey every time. I feel like i have been to an event after each video.

Kirby used a photo background for the cover of FF#33. It may have been the first, because Stan promoted it in ads as "we're trying something different here." There's also a full-page collage of Reed's lab in FF#39.

Man, this might be the best episode so far this year (and that's saying a lot). Obviously loved your commentary on such important and great issues, your setup was awesome, we had an amazing guest star (Warren is a treat, love having him show up) but you also covered the original issues! Fucking hell, you guys are the best. Thanks to Warren. He's such a generous and knowledgeable dude. Man, I bet you guys could do tens of videos just talking to the dude, him telling stories. Great job as usual.

Thank you for reviewing probably the most important trilogy in history. This is exactly why Jack Kirby is “King “. For your next Kirby subject should be Captain Victory and the Galactic Rangers, with Tom Scioli commentary

The Jack Kirby collector published a four-part series in issues 21 - 24 called What We Have Here Is A Failure to Communicate. They presented scans of Kirby’s arts boards and then compared Kirby’s notes, captions and dialogue with what Stan Lee did. The Galactus trilogy is discussed in issues 22 and 23. I would recommend anyone in interested in delving into the differences between Kirby and Lee’s interpretation of the Galactus trilogy to read those issues of The Jack Kirby Collector.
@DylanSpringsteen442 жыл бұрын
Stan Lee's prose and dialogue is so, so beautiful. He is really underrated as a writer, his stuff reads like Shakespeare while some of today's comics read like cartoons on the back of cereal boxes.

My first exposure to the Galactus Trilogy was that Marvel Treasury edition which I bought new so I had no idea they edited out the first few pages of FF #48 until I bought the Marvel Masterworks that reprinted those issues!

Perfect. Arguably the story which made superhero comics as we know them today, after the original breakthroughs of more "realistic" alter egos in a shared universe.

Just noticed with the three issues set side-by-side at 1:03:50 that the head shots of Reed, Ben, and Sue in the upper left corner of the cover changed w/ issue 50 - from smiling to sombre. A reflection of what the characters experienced in the trilogy?

I remember discovering these in the 60s. In the UK most of the comics came via merchant shipping as ballast. I would do my weekly trawl through second hand books shops in Plymouth (Devon). What a joy. Comic collecting used to take real effort. Where is the fun of collecting your comics in your phone........ I remember getting these issues, but not in this order. Take care my friend, I really enjoy your reviews. Thanx. NUFF SAID, True Believers.

I remember reading the Treasury Edition ... definitely a "fixed moment in time" in comics history. BTW, please comment on some of the advertisements in the comics from those days ... I remember buying the game "Tank Trap", and Bruce Tegner's "Kung Fu" books from the comic pages.

I never noticed how much the Silver Surfer’s image changed over the course of the trilogy. He is really robotic, featureless, alien and emotionless at the start and by the end the Surfer is personifying the perfect beauty and nobility of an angel. I wonder how much that was the plan and how much of that was Kirby adapting to Lee’s prose. Great to see you guys doing so much Kirby. New Gods seems inevitable, but I would love to know what you thought of Captain America’s Bicentennial Battles and Kirby’s Black Panther run. His Atlas one shot for DC is also great.
@ghrosenb3 жыл бұрын
I never noticed it before, but Kirby's original Silver Surfer face is very similar to his later design for Machine Man, and the story of Machine Man is much like what you say he originally conceived of Surfer's story. I never would have thought of it, but Machine Man was Kirby's attempt to do the Surfer as he originally envisioned him.
@devingolden11753 жыл бұрын
I just discovered that there was a 1978 Graphic Novel of the Silver Surfer by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. That would be cool if you guys could get a hold of that and see how it compares/contrasts to this earlier story or even to the original Silver Surfer run that Jack Kirby wasn't involved in so much. I think that could make for a great episode.

KIrby was really on fire during this period. If you can get past the inking, his concurrent run on Thor is pretty amazing, and rife with Biblical references; Thor becomes very Christlike and Odin is a Jealous Jehovah. The run that starts around 124 has Odin strip Thor of half his strength for daring to love a mortal, then, reduced in power, he gets stomped by Hercules because of that same mortal. Odin's power is stolen by an evil usurper and Thor saves Odin, crawling through broken glass (figuratively) in a weakened state, collapsing as soon as Odin is safe. He gets his power back and returns to find Hercules. only to end up fighting Pluto's army in hell to rescue his enemy. After that, various original concepts like the Space Colonizers, Ego the Living Planet, and the High Evolutionary and his New Men follow in rapid succession. And on top of that he was doing various covers and layouts for other comics.

I first read "The Galactus Trilogy" in the British black and white reprint comics that Marvel published in the UK, in 1974. Although I had read the "Silver Surfer" comic book four years previously, I thought it was brilliant. I don't know what I'd think of it if I read for the first time today, but the first "Silver Surfer" and other comic magazines, as you say, would never have been without it. Following your analysis, I do still think it's great though. Stan Lee's characterisation is brilliant, there's a creepy feeling of uncertainty about good and evil, and nobody but Jack Kirby's style of art would have suited it, as well as contributing to the ideas.

The humour among all the drama is good too, such as the Thing's thoughts on what the Watcher says to Reed Richards when the Torch returns from his mission: "he's the only guy I know who can make Reed Richards sound like a Yancy Streeter".

Prices have DOUBLED over the last year on these books. Four years ago I had to decide whether to purchase #48 or #52 (first appearance of Black Panther) as they were both equally priced at the time and I could afford a 7.0 grade book. I chose #52. DOH!

Great , great , great !! Love fellow fans digging on these classics like I do ! Surely , a high point not ONLY in comics but ALL of literature , imo ! Why , oh why , couldn't they have made any of the FF movies be true to the mags.....especially Reed . In the 60's , scientists were still seen as cool . You could be a genius and still be a man , a leader , a husband worthy of a Sue Storm ! Now , Reed in the flics is an uncertain nerd who somehow comes through , and sure , there are people like that BUT that is not Reed Richards : Genius , Adventurer , Inventor , worked with OSS behind enemy lines in WWII , First man on the friggin MOON AND invented the means to get there , etc , etc ,etc....a man so sure of himself he names HIMSELF Mr. Fantastic !! ( I once was turning a girlfriend of mine on to FF years ago and in describing the characters I said "...and this is Reed Richards , he can stretch any part of his body any way he wants . They call him Mr. Fantastic ." and she said "I guess so !" .). I digress , lol , what I wanted to say was I have FF#33 and it has a photo collage COVER , an underwater scene with Namor and the FF....I'm not sure if this was the first ever Kirby collage , but pretty sure it was the first cover like that ! I'd have to check my mags to see if there is an earlier example , but that cover springs to mind . Cheers ! OH ! , I am quite envious of your beautiful originals ! I have the whole Kirby / Lee run from #1 to #102 , but 31 are reprints (a lot being in Collector's Item Classics , themselves a gem nowadays) . Starting at ish #24 , all are originals but 7.....3 of which are these gems , which even in the late 80's when I was buying were expensive AND hard to find , as were the earliest ones which were not just expensive but outrageously so ! Cheers , again !
