Funny thing! The Romulans were an honorable race in The Original Series. The Klingons became honorable in Star Trek III because it fit the plot of the movie.

welllll, that and the Romulans were supposed to be the badguy in 3 , but swapped over to Klingons since they were more recognizable. (hence we now have a Klingon "bird of prey" ). I sort of liked the TOS klingons that could be brutes, but also very slick and political and downright sneaky.

Each race had their own concept of "Honor," as did the Cardasssians. It seems that by the TNG era Romulus had lost some of the honor of Mark Lenard's Romulan Commander in "Balance of Terror." In some ways it mirrors the decline of Rome.

@@megalictis9002 they also reflected that in the SNW version of the episode as well. you got to see the more majority POV of the star empire, the one that was being debated at the briefing room table, but as a viewer i was never totally sure if the "strike first, don't show weakness" was bigotry or pragmatism.

I think one if the most commonly overlooked causes of how Klingon society developed is buried in their 'enforced servitude' to the brutal Hur'q civilization (from whom they derive their relatively advanced technology). "Modern" Klingon society is clearly the aftermath of them expelling the Hur'q from Quonos and the mythologizing of the warrior clan/cell lifestyle that the Klingon Resistance. The entire Klingon society was shambling along for centuries based on the unremediated cultural trauma stemming from the Hur'q subjugation of the Klingon race. One of the reasons, I i feel, that the Klingons eventually turned towards the Federation and away from the Romulans was because the Federation kept up the diplomatic work of trying to help the Klingons heal from their societal trauma (despite multiple bitter wars between the two) whereas the Romulans kept trying to exploit it for their own gains. Both Human and Vulcan civilizations had run right up to the brink of self-annihilation and knew thats exactly the path the Klingons were on. Sharing those experiences helped bridge the diplomatic divide by the time of the Praxis Event and made it possible for the Klingons to reach out to the Federation for help. Now, ask me whether the Praxis Event was engineered or an accident... ;)

The Klingons always made claims about honor, but it seems they would set aside their honor for victory. Before khitomer, they established peace with the Romulans. They then sought a separate peace treaty with the federation. The Romulans could have attacked the federation, but they chose to attack those who betrayed them. In the next generation era, every single time there was a dishonorable act against them, there was a Klingon involved. During the DS9 era, they attacked the Cardassians because they believed that they were infiltrated by the changings. Even when proven wrong, they continued the attacks. They even withdrew from the khitomer accords and attacked the federation. They only rejoined because they were getting their butts kicked by the dominion. The Romulans had to be tricked into living their nonaggression pact. The Klingons wear their honor and treaties and discard them when convenient. I would not trust them

Like us, Ideology usually needs to take a step back behind what is practical and implementable. The Federation was a massive threat to both the Klingons and Romulans, as it has expanded very close to its borders as well Federation citizens tended to be more loyal to the Federation, as they have representation within the government and decision making. While it seems the Romulans and Klingons at most treat other worlds a protectorates where security is provided by the governments at a cost.

Great video about one of the most famous fictional species out there in the realm of sci-fi-universes. But. How can you forget one of the most important wars of the Klingons? Namely the war on the Tribbles in which the Klingon Empire achieved one of its glorious victories. Q'apla. Klingons and Gods: Worf Son of Mogh, House of Martok, Son of Sergei, House of Rozhenko, Bane of the Duras Family, Slayer of Gowron once explained the history of the Klingons and their gods. From distant QI'tu' the gods came to Qo'noS, which burned with fire. They took the fire of Qo'noS and shaped it, forming it into a heart that beat more powerfully and more forcefully than anything in the cosmos, the heart of the first Klingon. But the beat of the first Klingon heart was a lonely one, without equal in the universe. So the gods shaped from fire a second heart, as mighty and powerful as the first. Those two hearts beat together in unison and the gods trembled at their power. The beat of the two hearts grew stronger and stronger, until the gods could not withstand their might. United together, the first Klingons slew the gods that created them, proving there was nothing two united Klingon hearts could not accomplish.

I always suspected that the Klingons didn’t develop warp technology on their own but had taken it from an unsuspecting visitor which would have gotten them off their planet initially.

In real life the Klingons would have lack of IQ to reach a dangerous level of technology. According to Star Trek canon they got a ship of the Hur'q (memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Hur%27q) in their hands, which gave them an early starting advance compared to nearby species. In Star Trek most species are just some centuries or a few millennia away in their development. More realistic are 10-100 millions or even billions of years. Yes, once could argue because of the [SPOILER ALERT Discovery season 5] pre-progenitors, who seeded life like crazy. But following such a logic Borg or Dominion would have spread through the whole galaxy long time ago, and just await some development to assimilate/conquer a species.
