Hello Laura - I'm not in game development but I had the core torn out of my favourite job thanks to patronage or cronyism. I'm in a better place now but thanks for giving me the vocabulary to communicate my experiences effectively.

Thanks so much for sharing your expertise and experience with us. It suddenly makes so much more sense why studios (like Bethesda) usually don't try to develop multiple games at the same time. Working as a young architect, I remember how frustrated I would feel when getting pulled off of the cool big design project to go help finish a much less exciting project (like a school bathroom remodel) because our firm needed to pay the bills! How do you decide who gets to work on the "fun" stuff?
@laurafryer6321 Жыл бұрын
Interesting to hear it's not just a problem in games. :) The fun stuff is usually reserved for the people best at starting a project which unfortunately are often the best at finishing too.
@katemckinnon7323 Жыл бұрын
That's usually how it works for us, too! Seniority also factors in to who gets to actually work on the "design" portion of the project. The younger/less experienced architects get stuck doing construction details and other boring stuff. :( @@laurafryer6321

This channel is an incredible resource. I've met core teams in some Japanese animation studios, and seeing them interact really opened my eyes on how incredible art gets made. I'm an Indie dev,.and I'd really like your advice on how to build these cores.

Laura, amazing videos. Thank you. Small feedback - sometimes the audio volume of the video is too high compared to your voice, like at 11:25 and a couple times in the XNA video. Otherwise, it’s fantastic 😊. Cheers!

I’m curious about your thoughts on Game Maker’s Toolkit’s series “Developing”. Watching Mark learn firsthand the difficulties of making a game remind me of what you seemed to have experienced over the last couple of decades.

Marathon is going to be interesting. Not just for the reasons you highlighted. The other big reason is its an extraction shooter. The reason this is worth highlighting is take a look at the landscape of this genre. The big three at the moment are Tarkov, Hell Divers, and Hunt Showdown with a few more sprinkled through out. All made buy either an independent studio or in the case of Hunt a small team in a larger studio. The major studios that have tried to make an extraction shooters (Ubisoft and Activision) shut them down with in a few years. So we shall see if third time is the charm. P.S. I can't recommend Hunt Showdown enough. If your sick of pay to win twitch shooters and battle royals give it try. All micro transactions in the game are purely cosmetic, its made using the Cryengine so it looks amazing, and imho has the best audio of any shooter ever made.

I'm curious to know what your thoughts are on how the Core is affected by increasingly lengthy game development cycles, especially in the big budget space. It's one thing to even establish a Core in the first place, but what about maintaining that Core when each title takes 4-5 years to ship? Especially considering the popularity of sequels and trilogies, I would imagine later entries would be at risk of lowered quality as the Core is more likely to be affected as time increases. Do you anticipate that studios will warm up to adopting shorter dev cycles to mitigate this, not to mention to mitigate against their game design idea not being outdated by the time the game releases?
@laurafryer6321 Жыл бұрын
You're right..longer cycles make maintaining a core tougher! Shorter cycles help but there are some development realities that can make that difficult depending on the type of game. Play testing can prove out the ideas prior to investing more effort and there's much in game development that is never outdated which helps. Thank you for your comments!
