The Game that Shouldn't Work | Leaf Board Game Review

Leaf is fun, beautiful, and so creatively designed that it feels like it shouldn't work. The way the leaves perfectly fit together despite their wildly different shapes is just the beginning of the many things I love about this game. Having seen Leaf originally as a prototype at a convention a few years ago, it was a delight to finally get it to the table.

Play the Game is also the home of the Kidsplaining tutorial series, where Jarred (12) and Peyton (9) teach some of our favorite games in high quality, scripted board game tutorial videos. Kidsplaining started as a way to share our love of board games and help those who were intimidated by more complicated modern board games take a chance on new ones - because if a kid can teach it, how hard can it be?

And sadly.. it doesn't. From miles away, it is evident that it is a gimmick to help sell the game. There's a system out there that isn't as over-designed capable of achieving the same result. Not to mention that the leaf design is the least of this game's worries. With a first teach that hardly goes smooth, and an end result (after a game) that doesn't particularly satisfy. I don't see it, and I can't understand why anyone cares about it.

Sounds like you had a bad experience with it, which is a bummer because I genuinely love what they did with this game - but we don't have to like the same things and it's great to be part of a hobby that has so many choices. Hope the next game you play is a better experience!
