I think I have a perfect idea for an Ordinary Things video: Straws. How did they get invented? How did they rise in popularity and mass production? When did the tide turn against plastic straws to paper and metal straws? It’s an everyday item that if you go out in public you wont go the entire day without seeing one; and I’d love to see you make a video on the topic if you’d like. Thanks again for another wonderful video.

They actually were made of paper before they went to plastic but there has been a push to do away with plastic hence the return to paper or expirimentation with metal. My parents are actually old enough to remember paper straws and they think it's funny how people view them as some radical new thing. Granted they're also old enough to remember a time before sunscreen was invented. My parents are really old...

@hermionestranger49643 жыл бұрын
You can learn it quickly apparently -- one of my gaming friends claimed he learned all about stocks in about a day from free KZbin videos and sites, and since October he's been sitting at home, playing video games and trading increasingly larger values. He calls it "hard work" but he's actually living on his mom's salary, in his mom's house, and often complains about how mind-numbingly boring it is to watch lines go up and down. After one month of doing this he made like five bucks, and was absolutely /ecstatic/ over it. He thinks that getting a job or an education is a waste of time, but is also depressed from lack of socializing and doing anything productive. He'll be over the roof with happiness if he makes a profit of 200 after a month of watching "the market" -- I don't have the heart to tell him that I had made 2k a month as a programmer while studying CS as an undergrad. Personally I don't truck with investments. The people who make money off of them are near-sighted and have survivor's bias; most people lose money, and everybody who isn't a capitalist will lose money in the long-term. It's better to just work and earn a salary, and to throw a bathtub through the window of your representative's house if you can't find a job because capitalism is shit.

What actually happened in the end is that the market settled in a very usual place, the hedge funds re-cooped, and the savvy investors pocketed all of the meme investors' money. The little fish swam toward the light and got chomped by an angler fish. Oldest story in capitalism.
@hermionestranger49643 жыл бұрын
True. Emile Zola described the exact same situation in his 19th century novel "Money", but unfortunately due to generational amnesia, people think that this is some kind of never-before-seen, revolutionary phenomenon that wrests money from the capitalists and gives it to the people. @@krombopulos_michael that’s oversimplifying it. People got into it because they realised something was actually there and they realised the big boys were trying to force a company out of business so they could profit from it. So people bought the stock, then the institutions and the establishment lost their mind that every day people would dare do such a thing and tried their best to save themselves by blocking the little guys. And then it became a stick it to the man mentality because it became very clear very quickly that it’s not a free-market. It’s rugged individualism for everyone else and it’s corporate welfare and cartel behaviour for the big boys who never need to suffer regardless of the risks they take

@@krombopulos_michael The shorts did a risky thing and an epically questionable thing and they don’t believe their risks should ever have bad consequences. None of this would ever have happened if they weren’t caught with their pants down

@@krombopulos_michael The stock market is fine due to blatant and illegal manipulation by the billionaires. Momentum for the GME stock completely halted the moment several brokerages (most notable being Robinhood) suddenly decided to halt all buying of the "volatile" stocks. Of course nothing will ever happen to the billionaires because that's how capitalism works.

I had joined the wsb discord when it was up the day it shot from 50 to over 100. There were thousands of people in the voice chat, it was laggy and crowded. There would be moments where people can speak clearly though. A reporter introduced himself and asked if anyone wants to answer questions and a bunch of people told him to f off.

A place to stay, enough to eat Somewhere, old heroes shuffle safely down the street Where you can speak out loud about your doubts and fears And what's more, no one ever disappears You never hear their standard issue kicking in your door You can relax on both sides of the tracks And maniacs don't blow holes in bandsmen by remote control And everyone has recourse to the law And no one kills the children anymore No one kills the children anymore Night after night, going 'round and 'round my brain His dream is driving me insane In the corner of some foreign field The gunner sleeps tonight What's done is done We cannot just write off his final scene Take heed of the dream Take heed 💎🙌🚀

There are Russian communists? Surely they're all less than 20 years old?
@ДаудМухамеджанов3 жыл бұрын
@@specialforces3114 There are some "liberals", but what they want is actually socialism. When you point that-they are getting very confused. You can find people older than 20 years reading those red books. Most of the people are more populistic and left movement in russia is quite weak, but at least , they are noticable to people in power. Putin and co fighting against communists, but sometimes they are playing on their side or pretend to be "good old ussr". But really they can only turboshit in their pants like it was with aircraft carrier. Moreover, if communists gonna take the power: best what putin and oligarchs can count is just a bed downstairs in barracks of gulag, if they wouldn't be shot for crimes against people and humanity(less probable, new left movement is a lot more peaceful and that could be a problem).

It took the SEC less then a week to declare that normal people squeezing the hedge funds were in the wrong but to this day no charges have been filed in the market crash of 2008 where WallStreet investors outright lied on the AAA rating of subprime backed funds.
