I think SpongeBob knows Gary is an alien and is harboring him and just treats him like a snail. He doesn't even treat Gary like a pet more like a roommate. He is not surprised by Gary having bills, enables normal human like behaviors instead of pet snail behaviors, and only acts as a keeper rather than an owner. He acts as just someone to keep the food going but i doubt Gary needs SpongeBob to do that. SpongeBob does that anyways to keep appearances.

I don't agree with this since I'm multiple episodes Gary can be seen as dependant on SpongeBob, like when he leaves and is starving on the streets until he goes of with the creepy old lady. Plus when Patrick was looking after him he couldn't eat because Patrick didn't feed him. The only real time we see Gary as super intelligent is in the whole dream episode (sleepy time) where he is seen as super intelligent. But for all we know that could have all been made up in spongebobs head, which would make more sense then Gary being an alien. Plus when he is reading the paper, some animals like dogs can understand some words and even talk using buttons, which are organised by colours or words, meaning they at least understand a few words, so would it be a huge stretch to assume that Gary would be able to read considering that this is an underwater fish society which is arguably more advance then us in quite a few situation, like when mermaid and barnacle boy make a time machine. I spent more time and effort on this then I ever have on school work ._.

Actually it’s confirmed Gary is a snail if you look online to the original SpongeBob 3rd film storyboards and concept art. There was gonna be a plot where Gary got kidnapped by alien space cats and he had a backstory where there is an snail planet that he lived on and was prince until the space cats destroyed his home and he was sent in a pod off the planet like Superman and ended up in bikini bottom. Look it up it’s fascinating and there’s more to it
