Well have you noticed apart from SpongeBob and his family members there are no other sponges shown throughout the series, maybe most of them were killed during the war. I do have a theory on Patrick leaving the army whilst he was fighting he was hit by an explosive and hit his head causing severe permanent brain damage. Unfortunately in his condition he was forced to leave the army so Mr Krabs was given his role. That’s how him and SpongeBob became friends because they were in the same regiment, when Patrick was released from duty they let SpongeBob go too but not before asking them to keep an eye on Patrick to make sure he didn’t hurt himself or get into trouble. It would explain their long lasting friendship.

Actually, I think that, (btw this leads to another theory) because Mr.Krabs was part of the navy, and while being in a war, Pearl’s Mother (fighting against the humans) died and he found pearl, a small, weak, and frail and alone whale, next to Pearl’s mother’s carcass. He then realized he could make a profit. He then took Pearl and raised her as his own, and he used the carcass to make EVERY KRABBY PATTY MADE OF *WHALE* he then realized how long it would take for him to use up ALL OF THE *WHALE MEAT*
