Exploring two different ways (the Real of the gaze and shocking scenes) the film can look back at us allowing for a uniquely disturbing viewing experience, common in Lars von Trier's films. Lacan's idea of the Real helps us understand the reason behind this.
For more on this I recommend:

Duel is such a good movie. As soon as I started to watch this video, Funny Games came to mind. I watched it in the comfort of my home about 15 years ago and was so disturbed by the scenes but couldn’t pry my eyes away, and the movie looked back. I couldn’t imagine being in a crowded theater, I would’ve freaked out. Nice subject, and original.

Thank you! I'll definitely have to give Funny Games a watch. I've heard Michael Haneke films are meant to have that effect...

Wow I just finished watching it and what an unnerving and disturbing film... It certainly fits perfectly into the above with the Real of the gaze in our complete inability to ascribe any meaning behind the actions in the film, also the inversion through the film staring back at us causing great discomfort. So many times my heart filled with dread but I couldn't stop watching. Thank you for the recommendation!

@@FeelingPhilosophical I’m so happy you gave it a go. It’s certainly one of those movies that sticks with you, even 15 years later. I look forward to more of your content. It’s undeniable that you have a knack for exploring new territories even if it’s a little unorthodox. 😊
