Given the distance you slid did you have any abrasions?
@LoneLeeRider
@LoneLeeRider 2 ай бұрын
@@steveetier3025 I did not, I also had my armor in my jacket. However, I had thermal burns on both knees and both elbows. I think the textile fabric started melting because the nylon liner on my jacket actually had microholes and looked like it solidified - but no holes completely through the outer jacket and pants 🤔 That day I was wearing my spidi tethered vest. Supposed to inflate in 100ms. Some quick math and I figured that's not much distance to inflate, so I then bought the Techair 3 supposed inflation in 50ms. If I buy another vest I'm going for the Helite eTurtle with fork sensor because I think that gets in down to 10ms ish. I don't wear the vest if I'm in dirt and gravel, just an Alpinestars bionic shirt for heavy armor, but those speeds are lower. My wife was an er nurse, and she tells me that the airbags work. I guess I'm glad I listened.

I've got the Helite E-Turtle electronic V2 vest where I can simply replace the canister myself in the event of a deployment, assuming no obvious visible damage to outer, I think after 5 inflates though it needs to be checked by manufacturer. I wear it over riding gear and it can get fairly warm when in hot weather. Although where I live (UK) it never gets too hot in the Summer anyway, so not really too much of an issue.

I firmly believe in airbags, I personally have a Helite Turtle 2. For me, i prefer tethered as in my mind, there are a few issues with electronic bags that I personally don't like (YMMV). First is that electronic airbags, don't usually arm/deploy until you are over 19mph (ish) and many if not most crashes are under that speed (intersections, low speed tipovers etc) so an electronic bag would not deploy in a lot of scenarios. Next, It's another device that a rider has to remember to charge and if you are a LD rider you may ride longer then the battery is good for. Tethers never need to be charged :) Additionally, I can replace the canister in my vest in less then 5 min for about 30 bucks so an accidental deployment is not a huge deal. :) And lastly, these systems while VERY accurate are really mostly basing their algorithms on race data, for racing they are AMAZING! but on the street while VERY good, it's not as good as a tether IMHO. But whichever you choose, airbags are DEF a great idea!!!
@gvybin
@gvybin 2 ай бұрын
Hi , while it is good you already wear an airbagvest so thumbs up, most of your reasons not to choose an electronic vest are based on long gone things. Algorytmes have moved on beyond the beginning stages ( except maybe Helites, that do not upgrade) The deployment rate of thetered airbags is much lower then the best electronic vests. They either do not open in all situations or they will deploy too late in a direct crashsituation. The current status of in@motion electronic systems is well over 95% certainty of deployment in time on ALL possible situations ( low siders, high siders,slides,direct impact crashes, rear crashes, slow crashes, name it). Infact thetered ones just don't come near that % because there are so many situations the tether will not immediatly and in time react to deploy. One example : In a direct crash in the side of a vehicle, the airbag of an in&motion vest will be open when your but has lifted 10cm from the saddle. In case of a slide, when you slide next to the bike, it will be open before hitting the ground or something else....and so on.... Good systems , like alpinestars or in&motion, do have different algorythmes for track use and for road use and even for off road use. The algorythmes for road use on in&motion systems are gathered with each mile ridden by any user on any road. All systems are connected and all road data is used to upgrade more then ones a year all system in use ( for free). I have mine since 2019 and I automatically have the algorythmes of 2024 uploaded in it. The current status is 209.3million km of data from users and going up . Al crashes and all crash data is automatically gathered and used to upgrade algorythmes on the In&Motion systems In case of an deployment , I can change the canister myself ( in&motion system). On the race track ( race algorythmes) the systems do not deploy at lower speed to prevent unneccesary costs and time outs, but the road algorythmes definitely do ( over 95% remember) Lastly....Do not believe Ryan F9 misleading information on the subject...He is highly influenced by HELITE. There are a lot of inaccuracies in his videos about airbags. I am a long time user of electronic airbags since the beginning and I am well informed on the existing systems. My preference goes to In&Motion systems and Alpinestars systems. Lastly, especially on the street electronic airbag systems are a lot more usefull compared to thetered ( old school)ones. The situations on the street are a lot more varied then on track and that is where they shine. Would you buy a car where the airbagsystem would still be triggered with a theter on the front bumper??? or rather trust the algorytmes in your cars airbag system

Good stuff. There are other brands of airbags to look at too. Some use CO2 canisters like paintball guns, no super expensive and time-consuming refill procedures. Last I checked, they were about $800 though, for the tether deployed ones. Some also have neck cushions, so your head can't move too much, I like that idea too. IMO, worth it if you can afford it.

Thanks for your informative video. I've thought about one of these types of protective gear for years since first hearing about them. My issue with them is the discomfort from the increased body heat being trapped by the tight fitting vest. I have been using an Aerostich suit for several years now and it's about twice the cost of a vest, but it's a neck to ankle coverage not simply the torso. No it won't protect my extremities better except for road rash, but I find the ventilation actually makes riding in HOT weather bearable while moving above a stop and go traffic speed. I hope you never have it deploy while riding, but a follow up video after you use it for a summer will be appreciated. Thanks for sharing.

Excellent work, thanks for detailed review. Looking at the tech-air off road version after Vanessa’s/ the girl on a bike/review (she has had several activations). Now Noraly is out of commission - just a guess if an airbag would have prevented a collar bone break. It’s a big investment, but cheaper than med bills. My worry is blocking airflow, but I don’t think a Mesh airbag would work too well 🤓

I have fractured my spine and had my left leg ripped nearly off in a crash before. Even though the leg injury was by far the more left threatening injury in terms of that acute accident. The vertebrae fractured on the accident are associated with vital functions on the spinal cord namely lung function. So while the leg injury was far more gruesome and I needed three blood transfusions due to the severe blood loss, my recovery was relatively easy. I was extremely lucky in that I only experienced minor nerve damage that resolved in time, but it had the potential to be the far more severe injury. I now wear an airbag every time I ride as protecting the spine is paramount.

I love that you have the experience and expertise necessary to evaluate any research around how safe these things are! Kinda puts a bit of a damper on the hype. I want more research, I want more data, I want the EU to come out with their dang certification process for airbags (they're working on it). Either way, I'm almost certainly getting one this summer. The question is just which. I asked my girlfriend if she'd feel better if I had one and she looked at me and said, "get it." So yeah. Mom also voiced enthusiasm. Guess they don't want me to die or something... Thanks for this, Lali!

I've got a Tech 7. I bought it when it came out. I had one with a lead like a helite before that. It does get hot, but it's more comfortable otherwise because you don't need a back protector or shoulder armor. You feel overall like it's lighter since the vest is close to your body and you have more dexterity without the pads.

I had the pleasure of falling with my Tech Air 5, almost no speed thankfully but being my first fall with an airbag the experience was very interesting. I was able to do a last second twist of my body to fall on my back and not my side, then there was a surprising dull bang sound, and then there was a sensation like falling onto a dense pillow. On the ground I was just left thinking, what was that sound? Then you notice your upper body is very stiff for the first 30 seconds to a minute because the pressure takes a good while to dissipate. I definitely recommend them if you can afford them!!

Big caveats: I can't speak to its efficacy (thankfully), and I don't even own a motorcycle yet (MSF coming up in a couple weeks). But so doing the smart thing and getting the gear before the bike. Splurged on one of these cos I'm privileged enough to be able to afford one, and because in spite of the lack of data (also spent a long time looking up any info), I'm assuming their requirement in MotoGP/FIM means they're effective at least to some extent? I will say, I got the canvas version and though the CycleGear site says it can be worn under a jacket, the manual says it should only go over one. In any case, thank you a lot for making this video!

I live in Japan, specifically Yokohama. The temps go up to 30C+ with 90% humidity. I have the Dianese Air bag vest and I always have to decide do I ride today, drive the van or take the train? It's bad enough with the helmet on at stop lights but with this vest you gets very hot and sweaty. I've toyed with the idea of getting the type that is similar to the floatation device for the summer. The Japanese Motorcycle Police use that style and it protects back and neck areas but it attaches to the bike. ATGATT is great to preach but isn't always the best idea for every situation. So I usually ride until it's not safe in my opinion. Thanks for bringing up this topic. Especially since my daughter has expressed her interest in learning to ride.

In my life, I will never even be attempting anything they do in motogp, but I might want to make a 20 mph turn. I always wear full gear including an Aerostich R3 will full armor and CE 2 level everything else. So far though, I found nothing that might realistically keep you from getting RemboUSMC's injuries in the same crash. I would certainly have a lot fewer injuries than he got with my gear, but I think I would still have the broken ribs.

Thanks! Just saw Ms Itchy boots video of the broken collar bone. I’m assuming she landed sideways shoulder first which is probably not going to be protected in these. However I think I will get one soon in the next 6 months as it seems silly to not have extra protection with US freeways speeds and large vehicles everywhere. People using these will give us the data we need on efficacy.

My understanding is that the current motorcycle airbag vests are designed to also provide neck stabilizing during a crash when wearing a full face helmet. Is my understanding correct? (I'm asking because I was kind of surprised you didn't say anything about neck stabilizing.) Airbag vests have been available for about 20 years. But the early vests were designed for equestrian (horses) riding and were adopted for motorcycle riding. I suspect the the one designed for motorcycles use provide better motorcyclist protection. Keep in mind that a 20 mph crash T-boning a car will usually produce a greater acceleration/deceleration than a 100 mph crash on a race track. That is what makes racing tracks safer. There isn't things to T-bone on the track. Also statistically I believe that the average fatal motorcycle crash in the USA is still under 40 mph. Forty years ago the Hurt Report found the average speed of fatal motorcycle crashes to be about 32 mph. This means a lot of fatal crashes are happening under 30 mph. So the 20 mph T-bone crash test is a valid test. Lali, I assume that you are aware of the Hurt Report. Part of the Hurt report talks about the difficulty of collecting accurate crash information. It stated that any motorcycle crash study based on police reports will be inaccurate due to the low quality of the police report. That was over forty years ago. From taking to people in the Washington state motorcycle safety program that gathers statistics on motorcycle crashes in Washington state I know that this hasn't really changed. Something as simple as, "was the rider wear a helmet?" can be difficult to answer fully. A motorcycle helmet was presented at the scene of the crash is about all the information that the reports could provide. Was the helmet properly worn? Did the helmet remain on the riders head during the crash? Was the helmet fitted properly? What was the certification of the helmet? What was the pre-crash condition of the helmet? What style of helmet was it? Was the helmet modified so such that the manufacturer no longer support the claim of its certification? Washington state has a helmet law. Yet it is common to see motorcyclist riding with "helmets" that don't legally qualify as motorcycle helmets. It is also common to see riders that are not wearing their helmet properly or have poorly fitting helmets. To me neck protection is an important potential advantage of airbag vests. 15 years ago I started considering getting an airbag vest. Ten years ago I started leaning more towards getting a neck protection brace, (I ride adventure style motorcycles). (It didn't seem like they could be used together.) In the last few years I have been hearing claims that the current airbag vest do provide neck protection so I am backed to thinking about getting an airbag vest. I am leaning towards a tether triggered for two reasons. First is ease of use. No battery to charge. No worrying about charge level on long or multi day rides. Second is cost. I do believe that accelerometer and gyroscope triggered vests are likely better in early detection of a motorcycle starting to crash. But those other factors will likely drive my choice. (Obviously I'm not an early adopter for this.)

Noticed the racer guys who blew up early on in your video had arm bags. Possibly with more air in the arms than on the torso. Of course they may just have had compressed lungs. Asphyxiation by airbag🙈 Torso protection is good. But extremity protection would also be good. Itchy Boots just blew out her collarbone and a torso bag wouldn’t “cover” that type of crash. Another youtuber severely blew out his lower leg and his good boots helped but still a major injury. FWIW, I think it would be good to examine the stats around the location of less than lethal injuries and develop this tech for those zones. I suspect we need, in order; airbag versions of american football style shoulder pads, hockey shin pads and hip pads. What we’re seeing now is Gen 1 tech. Waiting for gen 2. Cheers!

If you want to spend a fortune, you can get those full suits they use for races... they go with vests for street riders due to costs. Good vest airbags will cover your head and neck including your collar bone as much as possible though. I know my Helite inflates the neck protection up to try to brace against any helmet you have on to protect your vital organs, and your neck.

@@AntiParallali No she does not use an air bag. I guess she has had many tip overs and low speed crashes. I think the Alpine Stars off road vest would be better for Itchy Boots. It carried two canisters and can be deployed a second time. Noralee elected to fly out of Africa back to the Netherlands. Her Clavicle was shattered and they had to cut her shoulder open to pull out broken pieces of bone and put the rest back together with screws. Then during surgery the punctured her lung. All that she knew when she woke up from Anesthesia is that she was much worse pain than caused by the broken bone. She was screaming and it took a suggestion from her Nurse friend that she had a punctured lung. The DR's could not figure out why she was complaining so much. The #1 cause of deaths in snowmobiling is drowning . The #2 cause is suffocation caused by punctured lungs caused from broken robs usually caused by hitting a Tree. Most forms of snowmobile racing require a tek Vest which is made from a hard Plastic.

@@AntiParallali Here is Itchy Boots update after they punctured her lung in the Hospital: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qmnamJh7gLuljc0 Flat Track racer Brad Baker hit a rut or hole on a Flat Track during the X games like only a 1/8 mile track. He got pitched off his bike and broke his back now he is in a wheel chair. I think an Air Suit would have spared him the spinal injury. I don't plan on buying an air vest with a tether, I prefer electronic. The Model I like best is the Leather one by Helite. In Europe you can add a censor to your front axle so it will deploy faster such as when you are rear ended by a car at a red light. It has a Track Mode and a Street Mode. It has a hole in the back to clear the hump that so many track suits have. The fact that it is leather means it can be re-used after one or more slides. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qmnamJh7gLuljc0

I'm a firm believer in ATGATT. There is a but here, unfortunately. My biggest concern is false positive inflation. I ride dirt as often as pavement and I have reservations about an airbag deploying when I'm in a rut or bouncing through a rock garden. On the street for everyday riding, I've considered them but I'm waiting for more reviews and testing. There are very few products I'm willing to be an early adopter for, and I know airbags have been around since the early 2000s, but I want to see more development in tech before I buy.

I have a Helite turtle with a mechanical tether high vis. I am a noob rider with about 5 months under my belt so everything I say on this subject should be taken with a grain of salt. For new riders like me with our increased chance of an accident I think the $700 USD price tag makes up for the offsetting of the medical bills. If a rider is couch pilot with a ton of experience riding in safe conditions I don't see the point of an air bag. If the rider is going to experience conditions that increase the chance of injury of wrecking such as racing on track, new rider, wet pavement etc. an airbag is a good idea. Side note: I look like a bloody traffic cone and so far (knock on wood) I have had no issues with people seeing me.
