Thanks for posting this flick. I think Krupa was the best drummer ever... followed by Buddy Rich, who is also fantastic... as well as Shelly Mann. But, Gene has an edge that is unbelievable to my ear. I'm 81 years old and I still love to hear this music from my childhood, youth and young adulthood.

Saw this movie back in 74, as a young man of 14 just learning to play the drums it completely blew me away and gave me lots of inspiration to be a crazy passionate drummer (and i am) I only saw it that one time and was never shown on TV again. I have spent the last forty three years searching for this film and now thanks to you i can finally relive those old memories again! Thank you thank you thank you for posting this gem!

Gene Krupa was a friend of mine, a great artist and a great teacher. I only wish that they would have put more effort into his musical history rather than his mistakes as a human being. Because that impacted his wife for the last 30 years. He was a musician and in my mind there was no one that could compare to his Talent. Sincerely, JW Miller 🥁

Mr. Miller, Bless you sharing & you're absolutely correct as to why must the negative be emphasized vs mostly good, clearly his talent being the good. I grew up with Gene Krupa’s music resounding in my ears virtually from the day I was born and learned to appreciate his skill and artistry thanks to my father and his jazz musician brother. I was even allowed, occasionally, to use my dad’s brushes! I knew nothing of his ‘mistakes as a human being’ I just appreciated his amazing talent and still do.

Great movie about the legendary Gene Krupa! Sal Mineo was an extraordinary actor, two times Oscar nominee. He was so into Krupas character, studied the body language as well as the drum rudiments - awesome! Also loved his work with James Dean and Natalie Wood in "Rebel without a cause". His early death in the 70s was really tragic!

Oh -- too bad he didn't live long enough to reach his potential. Not sure he was killed by "gay haters." Much research has been done and the consensus is that he was stabbed to death by a random thug -- who was released from prison in the 90s. Which is awful, awful, awful. The thing about Sal Mineo? He wasn't afraid to be naked -- he revealed everything when he was on screen. What a talent. What a man. What a fucking tragedy.

In Gene's case, I gather he got branded an "addict" for smoking one joint. Hypocritical nonsense from the government. Cannabis is a sacred herb, for a number of reasons, and is not in and of itself "addictive."

I saw this movie when it first came out. I was 19 and a beginning drummer. A few years earlier I saw Krupa at a Saturday afternoon matinee in Detroit. I sat close to the stage. He was about 15 feet away playing like a wild man, chomping his gum. His drum set had blue and green sparkely glitter on the sides. A Coke cost $.25 which was a $.20 increase from usual. I was amassed! At the time I didn't think much of Sal Mineo's performance of my hero but he's OK now - I guess.

The drummer does make all the difference in a band. I'm a bass player and rely on my drummer brothers (and sisters) to be in the pocket all night. A bad drummer ruins the whole vibe. But when a band has that pocket it's almost orgasmic. Krupa had it in spades. Great old flick.

Mineo is incredible here. You can lipsync and portray a professional songbird, but it takes real talent to imitate a style as unique as Krupa's. Great music throughout, especially with Krupa himself recreating the works himself, and so good to hear Anita O'Day, Red Nichols, etc. if only for short bits. James Darren had a pretty good singing career, although I think now he's been overshadowed by so many other bigger names of his generation. But he's also had a decent tv career - I remember him especially from THE TIME TUNNEL.

My husband grew up in the same neighborhood where Krupa had a house in Yonkers in the 50s and 60s and used to go over to his house to watch and listen to him practice all the time. Because of that, my husband became a fine percussionist with a great sense of rhythm as well! My husband remembers seeing Krupa playing in dives on W. 42nd St. when he had hit rock bottom and told me Krupa really looked and was pathetic towards the end. Sad ending. And very sad ending to the late great Sal Mineo's life when he was murdered at such a young age. RIP to both.
