In the previous episode of Past Continuous, we looked at how India's "middle class" is actually just a tiny group of upper caste elites. (Watch here: • Does The Indian Middle... )
In this episode, we explain how this group managed to "forget" their caste while converting their traditional caste privileges into success in the modern world. And we explore how this collective "forgetting" affected everyone else in India.
India Ink is a public history project that simplifies complicated ideas from Indian history that are relevant to today's debates. More at indiaink.org.

Corrections:
1. In our section about the Mandal Commission's population estimates, we said the Commission estimated that the OBC population was 56%. It's actually 52%.
2. In the video, we quote a 2009 study as saying that applicants with upper caste names were twice as likely to get selected as applications with Dalit names. The original paper actually says the odds of a Dalit being called for an interview were 0.68 of the odds of an upper caste applicant. The full paper is accessible here: dalitstudies.or...
3. We say that reservations is only in the Directive Principles. That isn't correct. It's also mentioned in Articles 15(4) and 16(4) of the Constitution where they were still seen as an "exception". This has since changed, most notably through the case of NM Thomas where the Supreme Court clarified that these shouldn't be exceptions but were fundamental to equality. For more about how the jurisprudence has changed, see indconlawphil....

You have quoted 1 sided facts. I have given SSC exams and i witnessed majority of general catagory seats were occupied by obcs and they have their quota also. Maybe there are many meritorious and rich students from general but average and poor students are also there who feels really frustrated that they are born in this country. If others have faced partiality in past under kingship, you are doing the same in democracy. With that logic, they should be given relaxation after they commit a crime. A person shouldn't be punished for the wrong deeds of his past generations. Govt should work to remove any such discrimination rather than continuously giving reservations because it is a never-ending cause until it is political. 🙏

Reserved category seats are anyway not filled. You take up any field and do a google search. And further you are saying that those who have gotten a decent job because of reservation should be excluded from it, so that more seats could be emptied for upper castes ??? At the most reservation can make you IAS, or Doctor or Professor. That's it... You are not going to become members of Central Secretariat, if you don't believe me check the 89 members list. And there actually is income limit in OBC reservation, if you don't already know, so if you are 1st class employees your children can't avail reservation. This policy benefits a very very few number of people. It's just a immediate pill for the disease that is caste, but it can't nourish you for eternity, that's comes only after regular intake of nutrients. So beyond reservation there is so much that needs to be done. A child can take reservation only if he/she has passed at least 12 year of schooling. That's where we need more equality than anywhere else. In my cousins Primary school, only 3 upper caste children are studying, around 35 are OBCs and somewhere around 20 are SC/ST and 1 Muslim...

Let me help you understand this. You are also a victim of this caste discrimination from top (not bottom). If one establishes a privilege.based access based society and call it merit, they have to sacrifice a few of their own kind and then make you feel insecure that a. But for reservation, you would have beaten your friend. In your case, you explain it was a person from OBC with similar economic status. Many will give even more micro examples of a rich OBC or Dalit making it. b. They will make you feel even more worse that the same rich Dalit or OBC is getting jobs for their grand children and that it is not widely distributed. The truth is this: A meritocratic society not only oppresses lower castes but also a percentage of its own. What stopped the 85% upper castes who occupy these ministry of education from opening more colleges of merit given the size of India? Instead 65-70% of higher education funds of centre gets pumped into the few IITs we have. The rest of engineering colleges of govt languish without funds and so end up with poor equality education. To fill this cry for demand, they allowed private colleges. Unfortunately, these are even more worse money making machines that quality got sacrificed even though they have no quota by caste. Which is why the rich creamy layer lf general caste which has accumulated enough capital is now sending their less meritorious children (who can't slog for JEE) to US and other places spending 4-5 crores to help in undergraduate studies. Net net: you have not lost your seat to a undeserving OBC who was able to get it because of fight for representation but you were denied an opportunity by the same caste you come from through their foolish focus on merit. Merit, like science, is a double edged weapon. It is useful when everyone in society has equal opportunity. Unfortunately, it hurts the rule giver even more. If you are truly rational, you will realise that your anger should be directed at the rich upper castes which are able to find even more opportunities for their children. Let me take my example: It got into IIT in an age when there was no coaching class or this sort of competition. I belong go General category. Since then, none of my close relatives and their children have not made it into IIT. Luckily, since I am from south (even though I did my schooling onwards in Delhi), the education system allowed a lot of my relatives to send to many private engineering colleges which are not half as good as IITs. Moreover, many got into IT and computer science even though by sheer merit they wouldn't have gotten those courses. Since their parents had capital, they finished and now many are working in IT companies (which boomed in South) and making even more money than me working in US etc., They are simply lucky people who were in the right place at right time. Similarly, my relatives who are poor and couldn't afford to send them to private colleges have kids who are working in small business, menial tasks etc., Many of my other relatives don't want to be associated with them blaming them for lack of hardwork or foresight or simply egging them saying "Indian system doesn't allow merit. That's why we want our kids to be abroad. They reward merit." Hope you have understand the power structures better and the oppressive power of merit. If you are the thinking kind, please read Micheal Sandel's "The Tyranny of Merit." It will make you understand why you should fight alongside the disadvantaged people of India for a fairer world.

Exactly that’s what I have been saying. This is science not government exams. Science needs scientific thinking and the aptitude to comprehend the stuff being taught to you. How would a person who got in with 60% compete with one that got in with 80% it is an obvious fact that the 60% guy that got in with reservation would not get the job as compared to the 80% guy. This is the real story not the one being *preached*. Nobody loves to discriminate but if your credentials and skills don’t qualify you for the job it doesn’t matter if you’re sc or general they see what you posses now not what your family did ages back.

Hey India Ink, I just came across your channel yesterday and I love what you do. I have a video request. Can you make a video on how being a Punjabi became a "Jatt only club" and casteism in Sikhism? As a Punjabi Sikh I see this blatant casteism everywhere, in songs and movies too. There is no representation of lower castes in the culture and their last names are used as slurs. It will be relevant since you talk about caste and religious divide being used as a cover for casteism. In Sikhism too the conversation revolves around Hindu vs. Sikh and the caste issue is ignored.

Caste was never birth based. The following data just proves it..... See below ---- The Centre said the flaws were glaring from the simple statistics that in the 1931 Census, the total number of castes enumerated were just 4,147 but in the 2011 SECC, these were more than 46 lakh. “Assuming that some castes may bifurcate into sub-castes, the total number cannot be exponentially high to this extent,” it said. “SECC 2011 data suffer from infirmities making it unusable for any official purposes and cannot be mentioned as any official document,” it said and informed the court that Census 2021, preparations for which are in the final stages, would collect data on SCs and STs and not on enumeration of OBCs. ---- Can you please explain to me from where did 49 lakhs new castes come up in the last 80 years ??? 0:50 can you explain this? Any non-upper caste who got lower than computer engineering would be taking a reserved seat obviously. That's why non-upper castes won't be taking non-reserved seats. Because vast majority will have a chance to use reservation to get a better branch. And then you'll be left with a population group with excess of upper castes, so obviously all the unreserved seats will go to upper castes. At best you could say "why doesn't the computer science department have equal representation of all castes." Which would be true, but that is significantly from claiming that the whole iit didn't have as many lower caste people selected without reservation. They might just be lagging behind by a small margin, and so most of them would be applicable to use the reserved seats. Am i missing something here???

Hence placed the 50%cap ; Reservations are useful only if there are conditions for the backward to study , live healthily - mind and body and are not discriminated at which needs just one thing -Moral application of mind while doing one's duty-Politicians most of them lack it, it is this majority that is creating a inequitable ecosystem rather than the people ; to a person toiling hard day and night to meet his/her needs , Hike/dip in reservation matters little! Well researched. BUT I’d like to point out that Dr. Ambedkar himself thought of reservation as a bandage. It ISN’T medicine for a community that actively hates another community just because of name, religion etc. If reservation is meant as representation, then there must a point in time where we have balance. People always tell me that reservation is not for economic upliftment, but only fools believe that money isnt the centre of this dystopian psudotheoretical world. Social empowerment is caste capital. And caste capital is money. I believe reservation has festered into something not intended and its reach is even less than before. Reservation is the answer but i think we need to amend a lot of it. I believe in aggressive education reforms and removing the lower quota for lower castes.

Your whole argument falls flat when you think about it for more than 2 hours. And believe me, I did think about it for a solid 3 hours. The general category is open to absolutely anyone. Dalits, SC/ST, Muslims, anyone can apply through this category..yet they don't. Isn't that the main problem? Stereotypes follow the trends. In that story about the OBC in IIT, the UC fellow assumes that, because that's what usually happens. Almost nobody except UCs actually apply through General Merit(cause they don't have an alternative)..I mean why would anyone voluntarily opt for a higher cut-off score when there's an easier alternative? And we all know that the existence of a crutch, lowers performance, no matter what caste or religion that person is from. That's why reservations (in their current form) is not a good idea. One more thing you seem to be adept at, is finding out the problem that exists in our society, but not actually suggesting any solutions for them. I'll tell you what the solution is if we continue in the line of thinking you have presented in this video. The only solution to the problem that is in accordance with this video, is the barring of all UCs from educational institutions. I mean that would be poetic justice to all they have done to the LCs, but is that actually an equal society? And isn't an equal society what you ultimately desire? Or do you just want revenge? I'll tell you what a realistic solution to this problem is. Not reduction in cutoff, but only reduction in fees. The more oppressed the caste is, the lower fees they pay. GC won't have a problem with this as this already exists. What the GC have a problem with the cutoff system. Eventually, when the economy of the country gets better, this can also be removed and caste would be history. This video has carefully been constructed to pull on the viewers emotions, but none of the logic here is sensible and the narrator a jumps to a lot of correlation=causation conclusions. So ultimately, it's upto the LCs to decide what they want: Equality or Revenge?

Does is makes sense for a push someone who stands at 5percentile for a medical seat against 90percentile - what cost will society have to bear for giving prominence to incompetence in name for injustice done centuries ago? We have to learn to live in present and plan for future rather than blaming past for our current status. I’m for additional support to over come the so called ‘caste capital’ but that should focus on breading competence and not rewarding incompetence. Almost all fields with reservation are dominated by “oppressed" classes, because reservation is only for them, and the general/open seats are for everyone. Comparing societal discrimination to educational/job opportunities is like comparing apples and oranges - reservation in jobs and education won't change the public mindset. Discrimination in temples cannot be solved by reservation at other places, as has been evident over the past 70 years. Also, representational politics has never worked anywhere - representation is not more important than people's lives which doctors deal with. Nobody is saying reservation doesn't need to happen. The way it is implemented today is extremely flawed. It doesn't account for social and economic mobility. Someone who is economically/socially backward or forward today, might not be so in future - neither social, nor economic status is carved in stone. There are many backward classes in general category, and many forward/dominant classes in reservation - so much so that they don't count as exceptions anymore. The only reason reservation persists today is because of vote bank politics and self serving motives of a few who benefit from it. Most of the reservation benefits are availed by a few well to do families only - time and again, generation after generation. The rest never get the benefit of reservation. That leads to two things: firstly, the apparent/pseudo discrimination against the “oppressed", because they never needed to work as hard as the rest and skill themselves as much. Secondly, the real oppressed people never benefit from it. A few solutions could be: 1. Allow reservation benefit only once in lifetime, so that other people in their reservation category can benefit from it 2. Make reservations more dynamic - caste/religion/economics alone cannot be the criteria, a synthesis of all must be achieved. 3. Delink politics from reservation.

And well-off reserved taking the benefits? Have you ever researched at least once about this? Just tell me how can it be possible when 60%reserved jobs are lying vacant?

Because of reservation, representation is increased. So, what is the need to lower the cutoff for reserved category students? Doesn't it make harder for a general category student as compared to a reserved category student having same facilities?

Let's say there are 10 seats. According to reserved category people, earlier all 10 were taken by UC. But now, 5 out of 10 are reserved. This guarantees that UC can only take atmost 5 seats. So, why is there a difference in cutoff of reserved and general category when your representation is already guaranteed? And if a general and reserved student have same facilities, then why general student has to score more than a reserved student to get the same seat in the same college, hun?

@@shikharshukla4852 A lower cutoff doesn't mean that the entire category has scored low, it means that the last student in reserved category has scored that much. There are students who score more or near about marks to that of unreserved category. Secondly, low cutoffs for reserved category is due to that fact that on an average more SC/STs students do not have adequate access to coachings, tuitions, private schools, guidance, motivational environment, social support etc. as compared upper caste students. Census, and all other surveys by govt and private agencies tells the same story , that SC/ST/OBC students are more disadvantaged. In light of this view if you analyse the cut-offs of various exams and even difference in prelims vs mains cutoffs tells a lot. So, reservation is for representation, lower cutoffs are indicative of lower access to resources required to get more marks.

@@prashantpacific2575 so in case we need soldiers, can one recruit physically weak , poorly trained people in your army by not allowing well trained ones just to have community representation?
@prashantpacific2575

@@vijaysridhar9777 Firstly, your analogy is flawed. Lower marks in an exam can't be compared with inadequate physique for army. Inadequate physique can have various causes and anybody can have inadequate physique. But same is not true for social disadvantages. A Brahmin can never have same social disadvantages as a dalit. A Brahmin would never have to face what a dalit face everyday. Inadequate physique in general is an individual characteristic and not a group characteristic. A group of people with inadequate physique for army is arbitrary and will include people of all castes. This group needs no representation at all. On the other hand, a dalit is discriminated not because something is wrong with him/her individually but because by chance he/she happens to belong to a particular group. And because he/she by chance happen to belong to an oppressed group, she has lesser chance of access to better quality education, training, guidance, social support etc. Statistics abound as a testimony to that. And this is ultimately reflected into lower cutoffs of reserved category students. This clearly is a systematic discrimination. And until the group identity based systematic discrimination, exclusion, oppression exists, there would be a power imbalance in society which will allow upper castes to continue the oppression. And to balance that power imbalance, adequate representation of the oppressed community is essential at every level, in every field. It is not at all the permanent solution, the permanent solution is annihilation of the system that perpetuates those group identities which makes one discriminate the other.
