Why “Hellfire” is such a good song!
Disney has made some iconic villain songs, throughout the years. Within each of these songs, they bring a level of plotting and scheming for their nefarious plans. However, The Hunchback of Norte Dame does something a little different with the song “Hellfire.” Let’s break it down, shall we? For a 3-ish minute song, there’s a lot to unpack.
This is just my opinion. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, so if I got something wrong, or you have something to point out please do so in a constructive way. We’re here because we’re all passionate about this show. Be kind and willing to listen. You never know what you might learn!

This song has been my favorite Disney song for years now. Frollo's turmoil mirrors the turmoil i experienced as a teenager growing up in what was essentially a religious cult. I feel his pride in believing that he is better than the rest of the world because that is what i was raised to believe, the terror and shame of knowing that the deepest and most desperate desires i had were grave sins, and riding the line between condemning those desires and succumbing to them. I went to Confession every week that i could when my parents got us to church early enough. I remember the relief and my resolve i would never let my desires overtake me again. I remember the shame and terror of having to decide, on the weeks we made it to church late, whether to not accept communion in the state of mortal sin and feel the shame of my parents knowing i had sinned and couldn't accept communion, or just going to communion anyway so i could blend in, even knowing i was committing an even geaver mortal sin of mocking God by doing so. I had so many vivid nightmares about hell. I thought there was something very, very wrong with me to be as wicked as i was. I prayed so fervently for deliverance. I made fervent vows in my mind to atone and to change. Much like Frollo's promise to make his desire for Esmeralda holy through marriage or to destroy her if that was impossible. I see now that the things I believed in were toxic and destructive, that the terror of god's wrath that i lived in, and even though I've rejected my faith in the Catholic religion, I still struggle with very black and white thinking, holding on to guilt for my shortcomings, and setting inpossible standards for myself that I fail to live up to. Sorry for the rambling. I guess this speaks so much to me because I have lived in the terror he expresses during the Not My Fault / Mea Culpa section. I know how that fear drove me to do irrational things and I feel sorry for Frollo not being able to see past his blind faith and impossible standards and just accept that he was attracted to Esmerlda and it was okay to feel that way without spiraling into extreme all-or-nothing thinking, and that there but for the grace of God go I.

I’m pretty sure the live-action remake from Disney got cancelled awhile ago too. Personally I can’t say I’m surprised about that at all. The current CEO, Bob Iger, said in an interview he was never a fan of the original hunchback of Notre dame to begin with and Josh Gad was going to star in it and produce it as well. But the company is trying to cutback on the amount of content they’re making anyways. Although that isn’t stopping them from releasing live-action movies of Snow White, lilo and stitch and Moana of all things too.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame is certainly a very interesting movie in the Disney animated canon. It’s not really their movie popular movie obviously but not underrated by any means either. Kind of somewhere in the middle. I know some people who like it and others who don’t. Personally I do really like it overall but I never considered it an all time favourite of mine or anything like that.

I personally like the stage version that never made it to Broadway. Don't tget me wrong the animated version has beautiful animation and music. But the stage version stays truer to the source material.

2:37 Actually, the Latin is "et tibi, pater," which actually means "and to you, Father." The prayer starts with a litany of saints to whom the penitent is confessing, ending with confessing to the priest. 2:43 This is actually "quia peccavi nimis," which means "because I have greatly sinned" The last words continue this with [I have greatly sinned] in my thoughts, in my words, and in my deeds." A little different than your translations, but similar meaning.

Thanks for telling me! I don't know much about Latin and mostly used Google Translate....haha. But I do find it really interesting that Schwartz added Latin into must of the music.

@@CinemaOverAnalyzed It's a good juxtaposition. I wish they released a full version of the archdeacon's "Confiteor," since it is so haunting and beautiful.
