I've owned one siince launch, depending on your needs it may be overkill but perfect for someone with a more complex setup. It has 2 2.1 video outputs, an HDMI audio only and HDMI eARC port. It can be a switch or matrix. In switch mode it just outputs one source to both displays, say a TV and projector. In matrix mode it can output one input to the projector and a different input to the TV (HDMI input 1 to PJ, HDMI input 2 to TV). I believe it can still do 4K 60hz in matrix mode but it can't do dual 8K or dual VRR (it can in swirch mode) which would be rare, especially now that the EU has passed an energy law for displays which has drastically reduced the push to 8K which isn't needed outside probably 120"s and up. I own one, mainly for the LLDV trick to get DV on a non DV display like Samsung or a projector. When the source does the tone mapping (LLDV) it can actually be displayed in any TV, the colors just look washed out unless the display is capable of doing DV and the VRROOM just does this instead of the display. With STD (display led) DV the display does the dynamic tone mapping. Going forward LLDV is mandatory and STD is optional but big OLED makers still support it like Sony and LG because they know what their displays are capable of. This causes issues for gaming as it takes different displays different amounts of time to process the dynamic metadata which is fine for movies/TV but not for games. It can do a lot of other stuff. Most of it over my head though. You can also set the static metadata values in regular HDR content to customize it for your display as HDR, static or dynamic, is just metadata (a hex value). I will say I have owned a few HDFury products and they are always fantastic and their discord is awesome. When I first got the VRROOM I had an issue, posted it in discord (HDFury official discord channel) and an update to fix it was on their site the next day.

@DavidSusiloUnscripted Жыл бұрын
As a calibrator I can assure you that forcing DV to a projector will result in overly bright tonemapping and oversaturated colour. It’s wrong through and through.
@BuildMontage Жыл бұрын
Have you personally used one of these devices? Dolby Vision in simple terms is a LUT / color grade that works over HDR. I have a number of projectors coming on my channel which I can't discuss due to NDA which have been certified for Dolby Vision and one of them currently doesn't have it right now and is getting the certification for it which will turn on later. via a software update. Have you looked into it more to see how DV works in greater detail?
@BuildMontage Жыл бұрын
No need to re-calibrate. When you do a calibration you can do an SDR and a HDR calibration. Dolby vision is simply a colour grade LUT applied over HDR so it doesn't affect the corrections made to the greyscale or the colors.

@BuildMontage Жыл бұрын
Hey there and no the HDFury does not change anything you don't ask it to. HDR10 is still 444 12bit coming in to the projector. The frame adapt HDR is still applied even with the Dolby Vision signal as it's simply a HDR signal from the JVC's perspective.

@@davemccague222 the NP5 and NZ7, from what I've heard, are effectively the same except for bulb vs laser. I came across this video researching forcing DV on my RS1100/NP5. The question I have is that assuming using the default MAX/MIN values (i believe 0/1000) in the HDFury does this not essentially lead to double tone mapping? First by the LDDV source devices (in my case either an Apple TV 4k or a Kscape Strato V) and then by the JVC's DTM upon receiving the HDR10 signal from the HDFury. Double tone-mapping does not sound like a good idea to me. If so, whole perhaps setting the MAX to 4000 in the HDFury since that should cover most content...virtually eliminate the player level ton-mapping and then present a more "pure" signal to the JVC. No clue if this would actually make any difference than just relying on regular HDR10 and JVC DTM. To be honest, I am struggling to understand how doing this on a current get JVC which has very good DTM is a good idea. Previous gens..I can sorta see. Or for projectors with static tone mapping.
@BuildMontage2 ай бұрын
That's a great question. There is a lot of chatter about this on the forums, and it's not "double tonemapping". What you're able to do is allow a source to send the LLDV signal via HDR to your projector. The HDFury only really tricks the source into believing it's capable of DV, however yes, you can manipulate the MaxCLL and MaxFall as well - there are lots and lots of settings you can manipulate but it doesn't actually do any tonemapping, it's basically a middleware device and I feel especially now as I have mine paired with a video processor doing HDR to SDR conversion, that the image is unbelieveably goood. JVC DTM is great if you use HDR for sure, and you still allow it to do it's thing even over the top of DV, but when you realise that it's doing the same thing to HDR10 (which is a form of HDR same as DV) you will see in principle it's the same thing. I love mine anyway!

Here’s a question for you Tony. Would you know if this will work if you have MadVR (or even a self built MadVR using the same software) ?
@BuildMontage Жыл бұрын
I wouldn't be able to say it will improve anything. I know with MadVR there are a number of ways to configure them - essentially the HDFury doesn't do any tone mapping like people are assuming. Its simply tells the source that the display can do Dolby Vision - it does a lot more than that but the focus of the video was related to Dolby Vision.

I don't have the HDFury affecting or manipulating the HDR10 signals only the Dolby Vision. So no it doesnt change the MaxCLL/Fall or anything else for HDR 10, it still comes in as 12bit 444. The HDFury doesnt change tone mapping itself like a MadVR or Lumagen would.

It just unlocks the source to detect that the display can accept Dolby Vision - that's pretty much it - it doesn't do any kind of tone mapping itself.

I didn't expect for there to be that much of a difference the picture comparison - holy cow! Any latency issues that are created by the HDFury? I know that AVR have lip sync options, but curious if you noticed any issues Also, from menu to video is VERY fast in this video. Is that true speed or an edit? JVC is pretty quick to switch from SDR to HDR, but it's still about 5 seconds. Is the HDFury assisting this handshake and speeding it up? If so, that alone sounds worth it to me
@BuildMontage Жыл бұрын
The HDFury actually fixes lag/synch issues so quite the opposite to what you would expect - it's half the purpose of the device to fix issues like that. And no the switch is quite fast. I can't guarantee it will be like that for everyone - you need a specific firmware version to do it :)

What about DV vs HDR10+. JVC DLA laser can take HDR10+ input, eg 1917 disc as movie sources or AppleTV 4K (3rd GEN which adds HDR10+) and streaming sources like Apple TV+, Prime Video and Paramount+ which has HDR10+ shows and movies? Does the HD Fury VROOM conversion to DV to HDR better than just straight HDR10+? Is this an alternative to MadVR or lumagen?
@BuildMontage Жыл бұрын
So I don't activate or force DV or anything other than DV content. You can force it for everything but I want to maintain HDR10+ if the source has it, same as HDR10... so especially with the JVC, let it do it's thing. I still have the frame adapt HDR enabled for the DV content the same exact way you would for HDR10 - although HDR10+ on the JVC locks out most of your settings.

Let’s say in Netflix is it showing Dolby vision? Because as of now with my JVCNZ8 through the Nvidia shield pro of course Dolby vision is not tagged in the series that I’m watching. I’m wondering if once I hook this device up if it will be?

This seems like a pretty cool product, but there are 2 major issues I would run into if I bypass the AVR for video. 1) I don't have a harmony remote or Control 4, so I wouldn't be able to switch sources easily. 2) I can't live without the OSD from my AVR, since that's the only way I can make adjustments via the menu... And if I go through the AVR, then I still have the issue of my Yamaha not being able to pass the HDR10+ signal to the PJ... Also, I'm sure to the eye it looks incredible, but the off screen footage in this video just looks like you turned on "vivid" mode. ; )

You don't need to set it up that way. It's not the purpose for buying it to get 8K - Im just showing options of the way you can set it up. If you want 8K and 2.1 through your reciever you will simply need to upgrade it if you don't want to lose the OS. Im saying in my case, I don't care about OSD as the Trinnov uses a VNC connection to get to the settings, the only OSD from Trinnov now is a volume control which I don't need as I have other ways to see that sort of info.

No detail is lost - you have to look at the demos as just an example of how they are different. I'm doing a recording of a recording - so my camera, the way the refresh rates work, then re-encoding it as part of the video, and then uploading it to KZbin - along that chain, no doubt details are lost. Truth be told, I don't know the answer to your question in any definitive way. What I have done is test with and without frame adapt WHILE having the DV signal come from the source (remember that the projector is just getting a HDR signal and doesnt know anything about Dolby Vision) and I found the image was much better with frame adapt enabled. So the technicals behind it - I have NO clue but I know I love the image. HDR10+ is it's own thing, ignored by the HDFury and the projector will play it as intended.

No no.. the 8K is specifically for 8K TVs and Projectors such as the JVC NZ8 which has the 8K eshift option. What it allows is for you to bypass the lack of HDMI 2.1, however I believe the x6700 supports HDMI 2.1, but not sure about 8K you may need to check that.. By splitting the audio and video inside the HDFury it allows you to do it without losing the audio, as 8K often requires more bandwidth.
