I was born and for first 10 years of my lived in a kind of desolated small town, most known for its depleated uranium mine. Fallout was one of my first games, I learned english playing it at the age of 7. Theres no way to describe how I feel about this music. Its very personal, and carries a lot of memories.

Yo man really dig your editing style. It's funny but subtly so, doesn't detract from the video. God knows the meme video essay format popularised by ssethtzeentach is starting to get very old, so it's refreshing to see someone making more chill content. Also, pulling out that guitar to do that chrysalis highwayman riff made me grin ear to ear. Fucking 👌

I absolutely love the music in these games. They captured the feel of complete desolation for the vault dweller / chosen one with a mix of finding what is out there. There was so much personality in these tracks that felt lived in the world that were not reliant on the radio. What got lost in my opinion was how the music felt like it was reciprocating from the area around it. Like how some of the tracks sound as if gusts of wind are blowing tumbleweeds, machines are clanking, alarms are blaring, intercom chatter, and an overall sense of dread. I feel like with the incorporation of the radio these parts of the post nuclear world don’t really come through as much and get stuck on a certain era of music. Going through a lot of the old tracks you can somewhat visualize the surrounding on top of creating the mood.

Holy hell, this channel's a gem. There are only a rare few channels on KZbin that do Video Game music analysis, let alone do it in an actually comprehensive way with the right terminology. That being said, those 3 notes that make up anything closest to a 'melody' in Metallic Monks always gets me. There is just something so bleak about that V - i - VI progression given by the melody ontop of the nuclear soundscape, it just sounds so haunting.

Metallic Monks is probably my favourite game soundtrack. That atmosphere and realising what the Brotherhood are like to meet after experiencing the wasteland in Fallout1... It perfectly echoes the destruction of the Great War and a sense of hope for the future... The pads are hopeful, and the story told by the ambient sounds makes it a perfect contrast. One of the few pieces of music that gives me goosebumps.

To broadly quote Tim Cain during an interview/presentation of Fallout 1. "The classic Fallout scores aren't supposed to be songs you listen to, hum along with & move your body to" "They are more like sounds who you listen to & will miss, when they are not there" And I'm glad that Tim Cain was a huge fan of ambient music & actually gave Mark Morgan CDs of interprets like Aphex Twin & asked Mark to recreate music that resembles those tracks. A classic soundtrack with lots of musical features would have actually been the wrong call, since it would have clashed with the atmosphere of the game. Plus those sounds underscore the desolate feeling the classic Fallouts have. I wasn't introduced to the Fallout series til 2018, & only played the classic Fallouts in 2020. However, being a young multi instrumentallist & huge fan of ambient & atmospheric music, I absolutely fell in love with those scores. I even have them in a folder when I'm on my computer writing down new song ideas or processing quick midi files & use those scores as inspiration to come up with my own scores. As someone who already listens to something similar like (Buckethead - Electric Tears) I am at a loss for words what kind of emotions those sounds evoke in my subconsciousness. The first time I heard the Khans theme, I was overcome by a complete sense of dread & caution. This song perfectly captured the essence of a retro futeristic world setting. And so the tribal instruments & chants, paired with the sinister main melody & modern day era electronic elements, really puts imagry into your mind of a desolate barbaric society, which has regressed to its most primal forms. Or the first random encounter when there's only wind hollowing through the post nuclear world, who has still the souls of the afterlive ringing in its lonely wind. And when I was overwhelmed as a low level character by a pack of scorpions, I really felt this hopelessness as a player, knowing that my days are about to be numbered & no one in this world would even care or know about my passing. Or when I first went to Modoc & heard this dreamy suspenseful, hopeful yet desperate atmospheric keyboard track. It was like walking into another dimension. It has a sense of tranquillity and bliss to it. Which could be both viewed in a negative & positive light. Like from the peoples point of view the bliss could be that they still have hope that their town is recovering from the drout. But the bliss could also be voiced by mother nature itself, being glad to finally get rid of the cause of her demise...which of course was the evil core of mankind & its greed for money and power, which eventually led to the downfall of civilization. Too bad many people these days can't appreciate outdated looking games & have a sense of wonder & imagination to them. If not everything has shiny effects & big explosions, and everything is spoon fed to them via errand boy quest markers in rpgs, & they can't even picture how someone would sound like in their head, then people simply cannot overcome their limited imagination & need to be put in a blanket of convenience & comfort. As someone who keeps his mind sharp by reading a lot, I always loved that only the talking heads were voiced. That way you could treat the classic Fallouts almost like books at times, letting your imagination ran wild & have some fun with subjectively interpreting it however you wished. I sometimes have those soundtracks on repeat when I'm writing poetry or songs myself. Or sometimes I like to hum the sinister lead melody of the khans them when I walk around drunk during summer & I encounter a pack of wild mantises on a glass window at night. "Do you wish to encounter your potential end boss?" lol I could actually convince my older brother to get into the classic Fallouts by showing him the modoc score. He was completely enthralled by it and gave them a chance & loved them. That's how impactful the score of those games is. Next to the score, the bleak dark yet sometimes hilarious humor is also crucial to those games. Plus the afterlife & execution animations & screams are hands down some of the most brutal I have ever heard in any game. (Maybe Shadow of Rome comes close) The first time sending a harmless unarmed traveler to Ghoul Jesus, I actually felt sick to my stomach, of what I've actually just done. And for what? For a handful of caps, so I can buy a rope to go done in style via auto erotic asphyxiation, should I ever face the fate of being about to have my organs melt from a scorpion poison stinger, deep inside my sulfur cave. lol And no one will be there to judge me, or to give this man a proper burial and a peaceful rest. Some molerats would enjoy his corpse as an afternoon snack & 20 years from now some tribals would stumble across his skull & use it as their new deity. And this last sentiment really sums up the atmosphere & true meaning of Fallout. Asking important survival questions such as: How short it would take for us to regress back to our blood lusting cavemen roots & repeat the mistakes of the past, by choosing violence over unity, once law & order would be abolished. I really enjoyed this video essay. The low resolution pixelated image of yourself is a rather fitting touch. Please you make loads of compelling arguments, which I can only agree with as a musician myself. Plus the occasional memes & funny edits also add a lot, to the quality of the video. I'm actually blown away that I spontaneously wrote this entire script in about 15 minutes time. I was just letting my words pour out without thinking twice. Despite this has turned into a romance novel, lol, I simply wanted to show my gratitude & appreciation for the classic Fallout series. Which I btw play the most these days. Looking forward to Fallout VR in around 54 years with the best graphics yet...lol Cheers brother !

@@SimonZinzovski Im glad that you could appreciate my thoughts & opinions. And thanks for taking the time to reply as well. What I forgot to mention regarding the scores. The reason they are so addictive & players won't get bored or sick of them after the 100. time of listening to them over again might be due the musical tool of the ostinato. As a musician yourself you might be familiar with that term. It's basically a repetitive loop sequence that maintains throughout or through most of a song. Studies have confirmed that making us of ostinatos in music, can have a trance like effect on people. A true master of this technique is guitar virtuoso Buckethead, which I've mentioned before in my text. Songs like Padmasana or Railroad Trail have this repetitive rhythmic motive to them, that almost hypnotizes the listener. But also classical composers like Beethoven make use of it for example in his 1. Moonlight Sonata. It's a bit different though, since the main rhythm melody remains the same, but at times leaves that monotonous realm & breaks free. I really love to study music theory & explore the various tools that can be applied to & tweaked with, so like a chef who composes a symphony of flavors, a musician who truly understands what effects which chords & progressions have on the listener, is truly good at his craft. It's really fun to overanalyize various art forms & create metaphors & to write transcripts, so you could articulate musical principles & explain them to people who aren't musicians, or have expertise in a certain field. PS: I like to let you in a secret regarding Fallout 1. I discovered 2 in game glitches that might come in useful to you. 1. If you create a truly SPECIAL character intelligence wise, you can get infinite handouts from the Vault 13 doctor. Which I find funny because it implies that deep down the residence know that you are not the right one for the job, since you can't even tie your own shoes. And now it's almost as if they're feeling guilty that they let you loot their entire medical kits. So 1 time I left the vault with 216 stimpacks. 2. In Adytum in the Boneyard there's a scientist called Miles. Upon stealing from him, saving & loading, his caps which usually range between 500 - 800 caps, respawn every single time. At first I thought my file was corrupted & I even made a new character to repeat it again. And on a few different computers, on various Steam accounts, I came to the conclusion that this wasn't a coincidence. But a game breaking glitch. Luckily you don't even need a high sneak or steal skill to pull this off to get a 7:1 chance of being successful. I did this for like 15 minutes once & ended up with about 20.000 ish caps in my name. And leveled up 2 times as well. 1 time I spammed all over again, cuz I was curious when it would stop. And it caps out on 999.999$ lol It strikes me as odd that I might be the first having discovered this. Since it's not revealed on any forums or mentioned in the guide, etc. This slight coding error might be one of the greatest discoveries in the game. Since you could be overpowered early on, which can be fun occasionally. If you wanted to you could maybe make another short video about some glitches or discoveries made over the years & you could happily spread that knowledge to the community if you wanted. Since my video editing skills are still sub par for a channel at the moment. Again thanks & all the best to you & your channel. I also subscribed naturally... Peace

I appreciate your mention of ostiano, as it is such an important musical tool. When I think about repetition contributing to musical character I always think about the American Minimalists, particularly Philip Glass, Terry Riley and Steve Reich. I also think about Psy-trance lmao. Those glitches you shared are very interesting too! It is so cool to think that a 10+ year old game could still contain hidden secrets

Absolutely fantastic video, even if the chapter title cards are a bit much visually. If I had to TLDR my experience with Fallout 1: The intro had me like "Oh God" But the moment I stumbled into Necropolis and saw one of the buildings with 'Children of the Cathedral' playing, is when I _really_ got classic Fallout. It also became my favorite theme in part cus of that, can't get enough of it. So beautifully haunting

A genious move Mark Morgan made was implementing pre war sounds like trains and sorls of larger crowds in the background to act as an echo from the past making the post nuclear present like limbo or makes the player feel like a ghost of civilisation. It tells you to not forget the real world before everything died instead of embracing reality of now. Thus it brings sorrow and hoplessness instead of positivity and hope. He doubled up on the sadness by reminding you what life should be instead of telling you what it could be while adding minor chords from sounds of today like among the metallic ambient pads and some major chords that comes mainly from instruments from the past like the guitar in Redding. I've always concidered the Fallout 1&2 soundtracks as one of the best in gaming history.

By far, the two most favorite pieces from Classic Fallout for me, have always been Vats of Goo, and My Chrysalis Highwayman. Vats of Goo for its sheer atmospheric sound, as if that’s what every Vault Dweller we play as hears when they exit their vault. Highwayman for its feel of trekking across any kind of desert, or long stretch of land, with the sun baring down on you as you make your way to the next settlement.

I really like your video and analyse of Mark Morgan's musics. For my part, I would say that what makes musics memorable is that, as you said, they are constantly played and tied to some locations. Locations full of noticable characters, or dangerous foes. They all have a post-apocalyptic vibe, in a game with post-apocalyptic situations, assets and all. And I think that, for my case, I keep coming back to them to just feel that melancolic/threatening/desolated vibe they give, and to remember good times I had in all locations.
@SimonZinzovski
@SimonZinzovski 4 ай бұрын
I agree 100% that the location element is supper important. Some games tie music to characters, or events, or even relationships, but most of Fallout's music is tied to locations and so it can take you back to those locations when you listen to it

There’s one particular thing about Mark Morgan’s music that puts him in genius tier imo If you listen closely to the Vault City theme, you can tell that the whole track is a narration of Vault City’s story. The vault dwellers research if the surface is fine, receive an all-clear signal, go out to wasteland, deploy GECK, build and develop the city, reach to other settlements and eventually gain control over them. You can put your finger exactly where each part starts in the track. Heck, you can even hear the cinema tape spinning on a reel at the end of the track as if the movie has ended

Although I wouldn’t give Morgan full credit seeing some of the songs originate from artist like Aphex Twin I do totally agree he really nailed the atmosphere the OST created. Aphex Twin’s numerous Ambient soundtracks spread across multiple albums is something you could possibly look into if you ever plan on making a similar style video because I’d say his work is often under discussed on youtube seeing how much of impact he made on that genre of music even possibly including the other Artist Boards of Canada. If you haven’t i’d give both of them a listen. (Aphex Twin SAW 1 & 2 and possibly I Care Because You Do. I’m not sure what to recommend for Boards of Canada but Geogaddi is good. I really enjoyed your video and I can see your channel getting bigger down the road.

You are totally right that the soundtracks are heavily Aphex Twin inspired. The Vault Archives page on the wiki is my go to resource for the samples Morgan used across the two games (fallout.fandom.com/wiki/Vault_Archives). I am a very big Aphex Twin fan myself but might not have listened to enough Boards of Canada, though I am familiar with them. Thank you for the kind message, for enjoying the video and for expanding the discussion with your well thought out comment :)
