Please join me in this video, The Genius of Paul Scofield: The Greatest Actor.
Paul Scofield was one of the greatest actors of his generation - and while he didn't have as many film acting credits as some of his contemporaries - each film he did make was a masterpiece of dramatic art - which was carefully chosen by Paul Scofield.
Paul Scofield was known to be a kind, genial man with a wonderfully mischievous sense of humour but he was also a man that wasn't prepared to sacrifice his loving home life for the glitz and glamour of after-show parties and red-carpet events.
Paul Scofield rarely gave interviews and when he did - he would not share details of his private life.
Join me in remembering Paul Scofield an actor for all seasons, as we tread softly through the past and visit the films, the life, and the final resting place of this true genius of theatre and film, the greatest actor.

My favourite Paul Scofield performance 🎭 was in the television 📺 adaptation of “Martin Chuzzlewit.” Paul Scofield also got an Oscar nomination for “Quiz Show” directed by Robert Redford. Thank you for another interesting and respectful video 📹💐🌞

It was extremely rare! His wife Joy said that he would sometimes refuse jobs if he couldn’t make the last train home at night! She also said that she would wait for him at the station at 12.30am and that she loved to hear his footsteps in the night! So romantic!

I was an actor while in college. I was sometimes required to cry on stage--an asset for which I was known. When I needed to summon up tears, I could not think of anything so sad from my own past, but I could clearly recall the scene in the film of A Man For All Seasons in which Scofield as Sir Thomas More bids goodbye to his family from his prison cell. That memorey would always bring the tears instantly. Scofield was much like More in that he distrusted worldly honors and preferred work and the joy of his family. He prefered village life to the chaos of the city and chose love over acclaim. I recommend all of his other film work, especially his role as Van Doren Sr. in director Robert Redford's film Quiz Show. How I miss Paul Scofield. How the stage and screen miss him. Who can take his place?

Thank you so much for your lovely comment! The scene you are referring to always makes me feel emotional and Diana Dors said in an interview it was one of her favourite films and also brought tears to her eyes each time she watch it! Enjoyed this piece on Scofield. Thank you. I agree with you about A Man for All Seasons being his best film but was surprised there was no mention of his riveting performance as the art obsessed German officer in John Frankenheimer's The Train (1964). Talking of trains, I once walked past Mr Scofield when he was hard at work reading a script in a first class carriage on a train to London from Sussex. I only just managed to leave him in peace as the temptation to thank him was very strong.

My face was too young to play the parts I would have liked to and so I eventually left. I worked under my real name (Richard Reeves), one of five in IMDB! If you put the four words Diana Rigg Entrance Fee into You Tube you'll get the idea. By the way, did you ever see The Train? Hi Shar, I loved this video, (surprise! I love all your videos on here and posts on IG), brilliant that Paul’s first role was playing Juliette! He was a true Gentleman and how beautiful that he and his wife were together for 65 years, that is very rare. You have to admire a couple who shunned the red carpet treatment and turned down knighthoods, who realised how fake everything was and were happy to be homebodies, just like our Diana Dors. I love how you always mention her in your videos, some connection you tell us about. My favourite film out of those mentioned is Carve Her Name With Pride, A Man For All Seasons comes a close second.
@BeautifulBadandBizarre

Thank you so much!!!!! I can’t help mentioning our Dors 🤭❤️ she knew and/or worked with practically everyone who was anyone! I agree with you entirely - it was wonderful that Paul Schofield could do the job he loved and not let it go to his head and to keep his family at the forefront of his mind at all times - wanting what was best for them all - he did go to one after show party in the early days with Joy - and they both hated it - and he vowed never to do it again! I love Carve Her Name with Pride but for me it’s Sir Thomas More that wins no 1 spot - because as a child I fell in love with history and particularly Tudor History so A Man For All Seasons - played so astonishingly well was absolute heaven to me! ❤️

Beautiful tribute, thank you. I saw The Crucible for the first time on talking pictures the other day and he is mesmerising in it. A personal favourite performance is the Audio version of Private Lives with Patricia Routledge - two unique voices together! ❤

Thank you so much for your lovely comment - The Crucible is brilliant I’m a massive fan of Arthur Miller’s work - After The Fall was the theme of my uni dissertation - absolutely fascinating! I agree about Patricia Routledge too - a unique voice although I haven’t heard Private Lives - I need to look out for that - thank you! ❤️

Yes that’s the back of the stone ❤️ You can see the front of the stone just after - there is a lovely epitaph for both of them on the front xxx I’ve been having a long birthday 🤭 and I’ve got a big family event at the weekend but I’ve got some fab videos coming up that I hope you’ll enjoy! ❤️

I've been a super fan of Paul Scofield since watching a Man for all seasons at aged 7, now 50 years later he is still astonishing on screen and I have many of pauls personal letters which give a deep understanding of him. I also have a book that belonged to him which was a gift from joy his wife, it has an inscription from her to him on the inside cover, it's my most treasured item I own .

I haven't had the pleasure of seeing all of Paul Scofield's performances but I have to say A Man for All Seasons is a flawless portrayal of a man's dignity and resolution in the face of a murderous King Henry VIII. A well deserved Oscar for just one of a multitude of great performances in that film including that of John Hurt.
