I got to see Toto less than a month ago. My wife (who's known me to play live and studio sessions the whole time she's known me) told me, "You were like a kid who saw fire for the first time. In all the years I've known you, I've never seen you in such a state of awe." Steve was obviously mindblowing. Side note: aside from Luke, you are also a huge favorite of mine. I've been playing for over 3 decades, and honestly, you have more talent in your pinky joint than I do in my entire being. So tasteful. I always consider Luke, EVH, Graydon, Huff, Landau as a MONSTER Rhythm player. Their pocket and grooves comes from God. To come up with parts after parts after parts that "FIT" with the song is really a gift. Combined with drummer such as Jeff Porcaro, Jim Keltner, Alex VH, Carlos Vega, Bernard Purdie, Steve Gadd... just make the song really shines with NO EGO whatsoever.... Tim you are also a "groove monster" ..... how in the hell you create the solo on Rick Springfield's Love Somebody....What a swing. BRAVO !!!!

Absolutely perfect musician.

I not only love how Tim plays and teaches, but his love of music and the guitar is so evident. When he’s playing some of these licks he’s smiling like a kid in a candy store. He’s the complete antithesis of someone who has to show you how many notes he can play.

"I Keep Forgettin’" is just one of those magic tracks where the band sounds like a single organism, so keyed into each other. So many neat little flourishes, like the descending bass run, the bell-like synth part that pops in from time to time, that double bass drum part just played once in the outro, and of course Lukather’s masterful percussive rhythm throughout.

There’s a time to walk.. and a time to run… You’ve shown us that whatever the music needs,we owe it to the song to decide which time it is.. and to present it with flair and taste.. Right on..! Thanks Tim..!

Only one thing better than listening to a man making good music, and that is when that man is so obviously enjoying every moment of it. :)

Great video, Steve is my favorite guitar player over 35 years. And it's great to hear you playing and talking about him with so much admiration. The thing that blowed me away about him, is the second solo in rosanna it's a improvisation, that's just genius

I have come to love Steve Lukather's guitar playing. Every time I've heard a guitar that catches my ear and wonder who's playing it, IT'S HIM! Introduced to him in Toto and the solo on "Rosanna" to the solo on Lionell Richie's "Running with the Night". Didn't know it was him on "I Keep Forgetting" and " Human Nature" which I really love both of those guitar parts. Thanks for what you do. And I love the way you really have fun and enjoy what you play. I see it in your face. Every time you do something nice you have the biggest smile on your face. I love it. Think I'll be joining the master class.

The main riff to Michael Jackson’s beat it (EVH on lead guitar) was his too, as well as Cher’s If I could turn back time.

Great video. Been hearing that for years from instructors and at clinics "simplicity" - "service to the song". I'm a drummer so it was drilled into my head that a drummers main job is to make the other musicians your playing with feel comfortable, 'pocket', so they can do theirs. It was also drilled into me that listening and looking at the other musicians your playing with is so important. Get out of your own head and make music!

Thank you so much for sharing this, Tim! "Human Nature" still gives me the chills when I hear it, precisely for the reasons you mention here. That tune and its performance are like a master class in musical execution, taste, and restraint. All of that comes together to make a very powerful emotional statement without having to shout it to the world. Utterly beautiful. Cheers!

very tasteful. sophisticated. thanks for the vid! i saw an interview with steve where he said 90% of his sessions were rhythm guitar. I like the way you played a combination of muting the strings, rhythm and lead fills. and very tasteful.
