As a Fil-Am who was born in the Philippines, raised in America, and recently moved back, it’s great to see the Philippines getting the recognition it deserves, but it’s hard not to feel conflicted. While it’s cool that more people want to call the Philippines home, it’s important that this growth doesn’t end up hurting the locals who’ve been here all along. Progress is awesome, but only if it benefits everyone and keeps the culture intact. Let’s make sure that as we welcome new faces, we’re also protecting what makes our homeland special.

Unfortunately, Filipinos aren't good on this. Filipinos are quite laid back and many times they just ignore the issues of the society. There are other countries who can support the influx of tourists and expats. Philippines isn't one of them! PH resources isn't even enough to sustain Filipinos!

A reason a lot of foreigners are going to the Philippines is because immigration messed up their lifestyle in their country. It is a domino effect. Blame globalization, multiculturalism, and wokism.

Great idea. guy's last phrase, "Define Filipino". Some daily examples. (American) English-speaking locals vs. the rest of ASEAN daily lives, documents, ids, baby, store & products name, etc. We have no strong cultural identity and nationalism compared to other countries, esp. in ASEAN (but complains and wants change in our system) Bahasa Indonesia made Indonesia united w/o adjusting (much) to English yet retains their regional languages. Typical Filipino mindset? Go WORK overseas using AFAM, etc., Get dual citizenship and bring LAZY (Christian) parents (mostly w/o goals in life, savings and insurances for retirement but loves selective Bible verses and amens) as well as some relatives overseas. House them in comfortable furnished subdivision units, w/ (new) car(s), provide adequate food, health maintenance, lax lifestyle like malling, travelling, dining out (Medley, SB Reserve, Wildflour, Friday's, etc.), as our politics and gov't really $∆%k$ compared to the rest of ASEAN's investments, HDI Gini gdp per capita.. Politicians + Local elite + their (rich) foreigner business partners loves to maximize profits by exhausting min. wage earning locals with OTY pre&post shifts workload w/ salaries enough to feed and groom a pet monthly, with their ridiculous work and age rqmnts. Redtape, rampant and classy gov't connections, fraternity, when getting a job and or businesses permits from military, police to public offices. Goodbye ease of doing business. Level of cleanliness, orderliness & infra? Say hello to Rwanda, Singapore & Japan. Vietnam had already surpassed us economically (catching up close) and militarily YET we love to brag that we are BETTER in (American) English + we love to have half blood reps in our Miss U & basketball, almost all the time.. And the list goes on and on..

It's happening fast too. 20 years ago i traveled southeast asia and not too many white expats. Everything was so cheap and people would ask to be in our photos. Now Bangkok, Bali, Jakarta SCBD, Manila BGC etc have built these super modern condos for rich expats. Yes it is mostly the smaller tourist traps but this is how it starts. Once they get expensive enough the foreigners will goto the next town over and gentrify it and so on... Just how the same people that made fun of us for living in Brooklyn when i was a kid are now living near me and making tiktoks about how "trendy" Brooklyn is now. Then they flood to Queens and it got expensive too.

I come from a third world country, originally. I love living in the Philippines now, it's an amazing place. But what I noticed, from my homeland. Many people have a poor understanding of economics in my opinion. For example, where I lived, a citizen of our country not even a forgeiner. Wanted to build a private marina on his land. Some of my friends from the near by town asked me what I thought. I said look there's always good and bad. The place becomes more touristy, you get more people and more problems. So, if that is your concern then I agree with you. One of them was made. He said but it's going to be private. Many of the locals have near by farms. And asked him can a bunch of strangers just enter your property eat your fruit and have a picnic on your land? So, why do you think we have the right to ho into his marina? Then I pointed out all the benefits, boat mechanics will be needed, boat cleaners, security guards, all the rich people who build there house at the marina, the will hire gardeners, cooks and maids,,, etc,,,, you have to see the whole picture good and bad,,, and then you weigh which one is better. If your on a little island and everything is good !! And you don't need more jobs?? Then stay small !! That's ideal. But if jobs are needed and they will be created, then do what's best for the people...

My theory is that almost the entire island of Java, from Tegal to Banyuwangi are predominantly Javanese. Luzon, on the other hand, is full of ethnic differences. The Manila to Bicol line was abandoned back in 2013, but it's being rebuilt and the Bicol lines is still in use. Another line from Manila to Pampanga is being built, I think it follows the same route as the old Manila to Ilocos Sur route.

My eyes teared up when you showed whats happening in Boracay. I have seen the islad transformed because I have been there many times. It truly is one of the beautiful islands. It's so easy to fall in love with the natural beauty and the people. But I have also seen the Ati people displaced. Before, I love going yo Boracay. Now, I cannot visit it without feeling guilty. And disgusted by the large 5-star hotels there. While the Ati people are living like squatters!!! I have come to realize that if I truly love Boracay, I will have to boycott it for the time being. Until the LGUs do something about the displacement of the locals and Indigenous peoples, it's only the rich who benefits from tourism. I remember feeling weird about people in Barcelona being rude to tourists to discourage overtourism in their city. But when I think about the gentrified places in the Philippines, resisting overtourism makes sense.

You want an example of this in it's late stage? Although it might not be a complete comparison, look up Hawaii and Puerto Rico. Hawaii natives can't even afford to live in their own land. Puerto Rican natives are also pushed to the center of the Island since most of the rich Foreigners are buying up all the beach side properties. It has caused friction between the Hawaiian natives and the mainlanders. If you know someone from Hawaii ask them about, "Kill a Haole Day". I always thought that the Philippines should've been a U.S state to enjoy the benefits of the U.S wealth. I was wrong after knowing what would happen. Japan is also selling land to foreigners, I honestly think its a bad idea IMHO.

Gentrification is more of a Western way of thinking. To be honest, Philippine tourist arrivals is low. At least compared to its ASEAN neighbors. Skyrocketing cost of living is more of a Cali concern than a Philippine one. Inflation is a Philippine problem but it's nowhere as problematic as living in America's more developed urban areas. One Down always has this problem of looking at things in its liberal Fil-Alm gaze. Not even all Fil-Ams look at things that way.

You are missing the point, the owners of the big corporations that Filipinos are working under, the cost of housing especially those premium condominiums in 3 business hubs like in Makati, BGC, and Ortigas, who are raising the cost of living are foreigners, not Filipinos. This is also happening in Hawaii were the locals couldn't afford living in Hawaii because the rich US mainlanders are buying lands and housing at very high prices that the locals cannot compete eventually they are pushed-out at the outskirts of the cities to the smaller islands.

@@momo.ru-kun I don't think you quite understand that places like Makati, BGC or even Ortigas are targeted towards poor or even middle class people. Makati even back in the 70's was meant more for higher income business people. BGC was also designed to attract top tier business people. This is not the same as Hawaii's situation where everything is expensive because pretty much everything has to be imported there along with limited land to develop. In megacities like Manila, there will be districts that have upper class and business people and other districts where the poor and middle class congregate. If people want really affordable living, there are the suburbs and provinces - options that the Hawaiians don't have.

Don't blame individual working-class foreigners for the gentrification of the Philippines like inflated real estate prices, but rather greedy and predatory Filipino homeowners and landlords who want to charge foreign land buyers and tenants 20% more expensive than they would be to their fellow Filipino land buyers and tenants. WMAF (white male-Asian female) marriage is a billion-peso industry in the Philippines because this is the only way for foreigners to buy and own properties in the Philippines under their Filipino spouses' name, so there is a necessity to finally amend the economic provisions of the 1987 Constitution to destroy that billion-peso industry by allowing foreigners to be legal freehold real property owners.

There’s been a push back against foreigners. Currently, parts of Spain are pushing back against tourist since the prices went up and locals can’t afford housing. Same thing happening in Puerto Rico, development and expats moving in creating environmental issues. The tv show Outlander, created mass tourism on the Isle of Skye that people had a hard time finding places to stay.Joshua Tree in California, some locals who work in town can’t afford the housing prices due to tourism. Jamaicans got overtaken by rich expats. They even have to ask permission to go on the beach to sell some stuff since hotels are on the beach. Their fishing grounds, can’t fish in some of them because of outsiders changing rules. I believe only 1 local beach is left for Jamaicans and they fighting to keep it. Overall, I think expats moving in are mostly bad. My wife and I are retiring in the Philippines but she wants to be around the locals. She wants to either volunteer, create a charity. She’s against those expats that create their own community and gated neighborhood.

If the United States got less immigration, there would be less United States citizens traveling abroad. The new generation also don’t want the big old house like the previous generation. They prefer to travel. Housing is too expensive as well. I live in the US. I’ve been here for 32 years. My greatest concern is that a lot of racist people who look down at Filipinos have moved to the Philippines. They may have married locals but only to become Filipino citizens and to own real estate properties there. We have to make laws to make it harder for non-investors to immigrate to the Philippines, preferable as hard as their country of origin has made it for Filipinos to move to their country.

Isn’t it racist too? You can be a citizen of their own country (US) but they cannot be a citizen of the Philippines. Also, I bet they did not force u to immigrate in their own country as well, for you to cry oh how hard it is to be an immigrant. That kind of mindset is blatantly racist and opportunist.

I’m glad someone finally mentioned this! Too many of the American expats living in and visiting Dumaguete are Trump-type right wingers with White Christian Nationalist leanings. You can see it in their comments and responses in KZbin videos. They go to the Philippines because they see it as a place where they expect to live cheaply while enjoying the benefits of “white skin worship.” They verbally attack and/or sabotage non-white expats, especially Black Americans against whom they have always displayed hostility. Be very careful of these men when they start talking about wanting a “trad wife.” They may want the women but they will probably have very little respect for Filipino culture. They have almost to a person never had to actually respect any non-white culture except on the most superficial & condescending levels. Too many of them are only comfortable when they are in what perceive to be a dominant position of power and authority. It is for this last point I say the Filipino government should never change its policies regarding foreigners land ownership in the Philippines. If given the chance, these expats would run you completely off your own ancestral lands!

My first reaction is: Well good. If Filipinos won't look out for their own interests, keep putting the wrong people in power, and be satisfied with their station in life, perhaps a few foreigners and some gentrification here and there will bring something new/different, stimulate the economy, inspire other Filipinos to see what is possible and what they can achieve, and even teach better standards of practice in the way we live or do things. BUT, we need to take care as to not disproportionately affect low-income Filipinos. They usually end up as the ones breaking their backs to make entrepreneurs and rich people wealthy. All benefits must trickle down to them. The gains from foreigners coming to live in the Philippines should benefit the communities they are impacting. Unfortunately, we still have corruption that will funnel money away from uplifting everyone, but instead only uplift a few.

the timing and slant is interesting - the video seems to focus on western foreigners, whereas I suspect the main group of foreigners living in philippines will be chinese, indian and korean. recent events suggest that many chinese investors have found new ways around the 1996 60-40 equity law, whereas this law simply deters most western companies from having a presence in the country. is the 1996 60-40 equity law hindering the development of the country? the 2020 PSA data shows that of the 78,000 foreigners living in philippines in 2020, 28% were chinese, 24% indian, 8% americans, 6% japanese, 6% korean, 2% german, 2% australian, 1% taiwanese, 1% indonesian, 1% vietnamese.... 1% being around 800. an after note - there are over 165,000 filipinos living/working in the UK alone....but only 12,000 in china and 3,500 in India. maybe the focus of this video should be on china and India as few filipinos live/work in those countries. Edit - there are almost 30,000 americans in philippines, but more than 4.1 million filipinos in the USA. seems that the vlog lacks real focus.

Foreigners cannot buy lands. If I am not mistaken they can lease a property until 75 years. If this isn't changed yet, it must be shortened to 20 to 25 years only. Within this period, whatever they put up in that property is well recovered already. The local owners could resume the business left behind by foreigners or renew the contract for much higher lease rate. Laws maybe promulgated to protect the locals from displacement and marginalization.

But they circumvented it by marrying Filipino citizens who are usually too exotic-looking and never finished high school and put the latter's name in the land title on the foreigners' behalf. If foreigners want to permanently settle down in our country, they should have the same property rights as Filipino citizens like allowing them to be freehold house-and-lot owners so that they could be eligible for mortgage applications in any local commercial banks, however to make it possible, we have to amend the 1987 Constitution and allow 100% equity ownership of local corporations and alienable and disposable lands. If I were a foreign investor and wanted to leave the country, I would rather close down my business, rather than be compelled by the government to divest my equity share of my business to local partners.

@@mrconfusion87 in our country, there is a chronic problem of enforcing the foreign land ownership ban prescribed by the 1987 Constitution because a foreigner can circumvent it by marrying a Filipino spouse and putting the latter's name in the certificate of title, so transactional intermarriage as a form of foreign land ownership ban circumvention is already a constitutional mockery that needs to be stopped, once and for all, through a constitutional amendment.

@@carlosnorris352 By all means, America is a free country. Sure, you scolding or reminding filipinos that america belongs to white people from europe might probably be a hate crime, but if you badly want to remind us then go ahead. Besides, it's easier for Japanese people ( most of them can't speak proper English) to get a visa to the US compared to Filipinos. Sure, Japan is a first world country, but isn't that discrimination? If you can do that, then why can't we limit the number of foreigners in our country? Why can't we assert our dominance or remind you shitheads of your place?

Gentrafication is generally a very positive thing as it means more money and recourses are coming into the country, also the number of foriegners is in the Philipines isn't enough to have a significant impact on the cost of living so it's imporant to realize that a lot of the gentrification is from wealthy Philipino citizens who know own businesses or work in western companies based in Manila. Ultimately it's the responsibility of the Philipino govermnet to look out for the best intersts of it's citizens.

The beauty of Capitalism. It removes you from poverty if you work hard but when the time comes when you have nothing to offer at the table then slowly, you will be replace with someone who is greater from within or overseas. If we truly want to be competitive and protect the local market. We ourselves must to learn to be risk takers and be entrepreneurs.

Businesses big or small create jobs and opportunities for a better life. In many cases, the wages are better than they were before, but it's true that inflation has also increased the price of goods . The infrastructure is growing very slowly as far as sanitation and waste management, which pollutes the environment. Singapore has delta with this by building incinerators that create steam driven power generators that put electricity back into the grid. A win win situation turning waste into gold and creating jobs in the process.

Thank you for bringing attention to this. The Philippines is not even for Filipinos anymore, it is both sad and ironic. Filipinos can't afford Philippines. We are gate kept from our own islands and paradises which we should all communally benefit from. The nice places are for foreigners, it's almost like we are only there to work for them and serve them

The problem is that the government has abandoned its responsibility to manage how, where, and who will be affected by these types of development. The socioeconomic impact of gentrification via land privatization is a one-way street that always benefits the few Filipinos who can afford it.

It displaces lower income residents because the investors and entrepreneurs coming in do NOT have a mindset to share, hire local residents, and raise the Filipino citizens salary. Ironically greed is what made so many Filipinos poor in the first place. If anything they hire Filipinos at dirt cheap prices, exploit their labor and possibly get rich off of their business ideas, then run off with the money.

I’m half Philippino. Iv spend most of my life in the west. Everytime I go back home to Philippines the gap between the rich and the poor gets wider and wider and wider. Nothing is ever going to change in the Philippines. They keep building new cities in Manila to keep the poor at bay. Unfortunately the entire political system needs an entire reform. One where the Presidents power is limited and business and trade and friendship flourishes… It’s criminal that large parts of the Philippines still have no running water and the power cuts off at least once a day. God bless the beautiful Philippino people🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭

I don’t think Foreigners and even Balikbayans and any migrants will not replace Filipinos. I think it’s better for the Philippine economy. If we have more BGC type of scalability, it could financially boost the Philippine economy plus the island hopping is going to remain as vacation hubs for inland folks!

All it sounds like is, the Philippines don't have any sovereignty over immigration, and so, like it or not, the foreigners are present in the country because they have the money and can do whatever the hell they want with it. And with an ineffective government, the Filipinos have no choice but to service these foreigners in a neo-colonial/colonized relationship. If the Filipinos fight back, then foreigners will say shit about the Philippines being unfriendly/hostile. I also wonder why the national government of the Philippines doesn't seek to develop or industrialize the Philippines first, prioritize the needs of Filipinos above foreigners, but I suppose servicing the people is too costly for the government to do. It is much more lucrative to take in foreign investment and service the foreigners than to service the poor and illiterate. The belief that the rich will just help the poor from the kindness of their own hearts is a myth. They won't. The rich will have their own motives.
