I watched a documentary about pet-keeping in the animal kingdom, and there have been a few instances where animals have kept other animals as a sort of "pet." These cases have nearly all occurred either in captivity or in part because of a surplus of available food. Animals that don't have to worry about finding food are far more likely to exhibit interspecies companionship, including a chimp caring for a dog, and a cat caring for duckings as if they were kittens.

Yep my favorite example of this is the curious case of the tarantula who keeps a toad as a companion to eat the smaller insects and such that would go after the tarantulas eggs. When in danger the tarantula will move it's body over the toad or allow it to jump under it. What's more they did experiments to see if they recognized the toad by taking skin samples from their toads and attaching them to ones they would normally eat. While they initially went after them as normal once they got close they immediately backed off.

I never really thought before about the weird dichotomy between humans relying heavily on the refined senses and instincts of wolves to the point that they became our hunting partners and friends (dogs), then later vilifying wolves as tricky, dangerous predators of small children. Thank you for a very entertaining video! Just 3 little comments: 1. You probably already know this, but for others who may not: sugar gliders aren't flying squirrels. They are marsupials that convergently evolved gliding. 2. Elephants are tough to classify. I wouldn't call them domesticated like livestock, but rather tamed, because they're very hard to breed in captivity. I once heard the saying that if it's on a farm, it's domesticated, but if it's in a circus, it's tamed. (Except for horses, of course). 3. As for reptiles, I'm surprised you didn't include bearded dragons. They're amazing little critters who can be very affectionate toward their owners, which is unusual for reptiles. Anyway, thanks again for everything, and I'm looking forward to the next video!

Was that about someone I knew of getting a tarantula drunk? Unfortunately, yes. There was an old drunk who was friends with my uncle (also an old drunk, lol). He was telling me about how he used to keep tarantulas to ... pollinate his pot plants maybe? It's been a long time. Maybe it was to scare people away from messing with them when he wasn't home, I forget, but they were inside plants. He was telling me something about how he would put alcohol (or beer?) in his mouth, then put the spider in his mouth. I asked him why, and in a voice that seemed to imply this was the most self-explanatory thing in the world, he said "How else would I get them drunk?". Probably just awful for the poor little guys, but this was the 70s and in an area where even now the education is just horrendously bad, so I'm sure the dude thought he was showing his little buddies a good time. And despite me knowing this was probably bad for them in retrospect, when faced with this absurd tale, with its sudden and absurd conclusion, I would be lying if I said that I didn't lmao. Random scroll landed me on this video and as a zoologist and history enthusiast, I have some points to argue. 1 sugar gliders are marsupials, not closely related to squirrels in any way and get their name from their diet which is primarily fruit and nectar (sugar and more sugar). 2 while I did enjoy the reptile portion, you are correct in saying none are truly domesticated, though the ball python honestly might be domesticated at this point. We’ve got even “morphs” to start calling them breeds. 3 Ponies are not a separate species, merely a size distinction or breed of horse. 4 elephants are not domesticated. All male elephants go through Musth, a dangerous hormone enraged state that humans flat out cannot control them during. As a result of that and the constant capture and “taming” of wild elephants, all tamed elephants can trace their bloodline back to a wild relative in less than 10 generations. 5 you completely left out the newest domesticated pet species: the Russian domestic fox! They’re were intentionally domesticated as a science experiment to try to learn how domestication works. And they’re actually pretty awesome pets.

FYI: When introducing hedgehogs at 12:16, you actually show a hedgehog *tenrec*, which is an entirely unrelated mammal from Madagascar that arose from convergent evolution. Additionally, when describing the African Pygmy Hedgehog, you showed a European hedgehog. Most modern pet hedgehogs are African Pygmies, but with a bit more research, you might find the original domestic hedgehogs to be a different species. I anticipate the first domesticated hedgehogs were Indian hedgehogs, which were kept by the ancient Persians at least as far back as 4000 BC, and venerated as a sacred animal in Zoroastrianism.

So afterall. It is entirely true and factually correct to state: "The humans best friend is the dog" Also the different ways of domestication show in the way we have bred our pets. Dogs for thousands of years are purpose bred (or were) and thus we have such great variety of dog breeds (Sheperd Dogs, Protection dogs, etc.) meanwhile cats and humans just saw the benefit of each other and, because cats already did already the thing we humans wanted them to do (for us) hunting rodents and pests, we let them do their own thing for the most part. Also I never knew that rabbits and ferrets are entirely of European origin...Both cute and, incase of Ferrets, super weird yet interesting :D

Australians do not eat sugar gliders. Have you seen the size of them? They are tiny! Kangaroos have a lot more meat on them and easier to catch.

I have a fox in my home, domestic foxes are a thing, they show many of the phenotypic signs of domestication; floppy ears, piebald fur patterns, almost curly tails... And they began as a Russian experiment, they are quite different from wild foxes. Mine is called Dwayne (in honor of the late Dwayne McDuffie) and he's quite friendly.

@@riot2136 No. You can split mammals into three groups. Monotremes (platypuses and echidna), Marsupials (Kangaroos, possums, koalas, etc...), and Placental mammals (almost every other kind of mammal). Sugar gliders are way more closely related to kangaroos and koalas than to squirrels

My Yurok language teacher told my class that a long time ago, Yurok folks used to keep lots of dogs, skunks, and one type of snake as pets, and there’s a legend about a boy with a pet whale. The snakes were mostly kept because their skins were really useful as wallets, if I recall.
