I know this is an old video, and you might not see it, or anyone, in fact. But does this mean you can have an old sovereign coin, and so technically own a gold bullion coin, AND a little piece of history that someone would have used in their daily lives? That sounds amazing
@BackyardBullion3 жыл бұрын
Yes indeed it does, which is why I love these old coins.

Sovereigns are minted from an alloy of 22 parts gold combined with 2 parts copper which was introduced by King Henry VIII in 1526. Officially this 22k gold alloy is known as Crown Gold which is the same alloy used for minting gold Krugerrands. Sovereigns and Krugerrands have same rose gold colour when freshly minted.

Love them. My dealer charges melt when they come around. Needless to say they don't last long. Tax on bullion is up to specific states. And as long as you buy or sell less than $10k in a day, Uncle Sam isn't notified. They're big in Lebanon too.

Yep, investing in sovereigns and the occasional Britannia when you're flush is the way to go right now. I've reluctantly accepted that the value of my pension is going to tank in the next few years so I'm putting all my expendable into gold and silver.

It is a nice sized coin and looks good!!I personally like the way the old sovereign looks, from all it's original day to day handling!! I like Sovereigns for fractional gold coins because they are recognized item and have been around a long time and are a nice looking coin. Where I am located in the US there is no tax on the purchase of these coins and if one shops around a little, the premiums on both older or newer dated Sovereigns are generally much smaller than on quarter ounce gold Eagles unless of course you are buying numismatic key dates or other rare coin.
@BackyardBullion6 жыл бұрын
They do have good appeal and are a good size. Good that there is no tax for you too - I would always rather buy an old coin for the same price as a new coin!

I like the sovereigns personally and in the state (really a commonwealth) that I live in there is no extra tax on any precious metals or currency so it is no problem here. Does condition of bullion matter? Should i still buy it if it has scratches or dings on modern coins?
@KwanYuenCHENG-y4q4 жыл бұрын
I think the chances for modern gold/silver coins , no matter bullions or collectibles , they will not have high premium over spot no matter how long you have stacked since there are huge amount of existence unlike the old gold standard coins , where they were mostly melted down already . Long story short , the most important thing is if there are no one destroying the coins , they are just spot price to be

The 22k. Gold Sovereign continues to be minted at the Perth Mint here in Australia , however it is subject to 10% GST sales tax and since 1985 subject to capital gains tax. Accordingly it is less popular than the 24 k. coins that as investment grade are exempt from sales tax but not CGT

10% sales tax on gold is absurd.

I'm in the US and sovereigns are one of the best ways to buy gold. I believe in 22k gold. It can stand up to circulation the way gold was meant to be. This is supposed to be money. I don't need 24k coins sitting in plastic. This leaves the Eagle, Krugerrand, and Sovereign. And Eagle and Krugerrand aren't worth it in fractional sizes. So that leaves 1 oz eagle, 1 oz krugerrand, and sovereign. All are great, but sovereign are the only ones that are a smaller size, yet low premiums to buy. Plus they're classic looking, beautiful, and have real history. You can't go wrong with sovereigns.

Here in Australia the Perth Mint coins the Sovereign but are less popular . The Gold Sovereigns are subject to both capital gains tax and to a 10 % GST ( VAT equivalent ). A better deal is the 24 carat gold 1/4 onze coin. This is classified as an investment grade coin and under Australian sales tax rules free of GST . Coins acquired before 1985 are free of GST .
@paganphil1004 жыл бұрын
Martin Carter: We have to pay 20% VAT on all silver coins here in the UK but gold coins are VAT-Free. Both gold & silver coins are free of Capital Gains Tax if they have a face value because they're classed as "legal tender".
