Dear Arith, thank you for another interesting, thoughtful video. I just want to mention a thing or two: Traditionally Frija as a mother goddess is the wife of our highest god Tiwaz, not of Wotan. The Proto-Germanic name Tiwaz derives from Indo-European *dyews, what means 'heaven' or 'day', and he is the keeper of law and justice, the chairman of the Thing, the upholder of traditions, and his sword is the executioner's sword, not one made for war. Wotan is the god of mysteries and male magic (thus a fertility god in his own way), a scholar who gazes into the abyss. But Donar has always been the closest to my people (the Hatti / Chatti people), because as her son he is the protector of his mother Earth (Erda) and thus of us humans living on her, too. The Donareiche (Thor's Oak) has been the holy tree of my ancestors, close to our formal capital and place of worship, only recorded by the name 'Mattium' by Tacitus. Today there are two villages, Metze and Maden, that seem to derive from Mattium, and in Maden there is a 3000-year-old menhir, called the Wotanstein (Odin's stone), which is a place of pagan worship until today. And in Metze they have reconstructed the old Thing site. So we have a place of worship for Donar, Wotan and Tiwaz within 25 km. Best wishes to you from Nordhessen, may your eye get well soon and you overall be healthy.

I find your approach and insight refreshing, speaking from archeology and your own spiritual path. The animistic theme really strikes a chord, for most debates simply concern 'the nature of the gods' as viewed from 'modern' theisms. I salute you for that Arith. On the Frigg part: did you know that the Frisian soldiers posted at Hadrians Wall worshipped a goddes named Friagabis? 'The Giving/providing Lady?' Maybe there is a preMigration era link to the later goddess Frigg? Also, on the animistic approach in Scandinavian lore, Hyndluljóð comes to mind. In the end, Hyndla reveals to Ottar his kinship, not just to mankind, but all living things: '..and they all are your kin, Ottar of the narrow mind (heimski)' Is there a possibility (even if I can't be a patreon right now) that you could elaborate on Hyndluljóð and it's possible initiatory, sacrificial and animistic traits? It seems the song deserves more attention by someone who is as deeply informed and passionate as you. Thank you all the same, another fascinating lecture!

Your explanation of Earth and Earth Godess was completely intuitive. I totally understood via epiphany. It is a way of thinking about how the Earth is alive, ways to feel about, how to behave with, and how our minds function to understand life and existence, and retain spirituality. Humans our emotions our ability to understand and be understood as well a desire to give our lives some sort of meaning or more to the point belonging. All can be brought together in our mind and important information can be shared in a way that is easily consumed and understood.

I try, which is pretty good for a person of my gen from the American Mid-West. As an adult, I spent 10 years going to Europe for extended stays with family and friends, but my mind could never pick up on complex sentence structures to communicate deeply. Wow, your switch to make a semi-lengthy statement in Italian was so impressive.

The Greeks had a primordial night goddess - Nyx - although she might not be a parallel to Nott in any way. According to mythical account, Nyx was the first being to fly out of the void (Norse parallel Ginnungagap?). Gaia (earth) was Nyx's sibling, along with Chaos, Tartarus, Eros and Erebus. Nyx and Erebus (deep darkness/shadow), procreated all of the mostly dark primordial emanations: Moros (doom), Apate (Deceit), Dolos (trickery and guile), Nemesis (retribution), the Keres and Morai (death and fate spirits), the Hesperides (nymphs of sunset), Oizys (grief, anxiety, depression), and Momus (satire, mockery). All by herself she brought forth the Oneiroi: Hypnos (sleep, who fathered Morpheus, god of dreams), Thanatos (non-violent death), Philotes (sexual and social intercourse), Geras (old age), Eris (discord), and Charon (psychopomp, ferryman to Hades). I don't know who came up with all of that, but this array of emanations clearly represent the dark side. It was said of Nyx that her darkness hid both the good and the evil alike.

Came for the pronunciation of Nerthus, stayed for the nuanced differentiation between "perceptions of a Mother Earth goddess" and "the animistic living entity of the Earth." I'm of the mind that humans are at risk of not seeing Earth as a deity because we are of the Earth, and therefore may not see what we're made out of (forest for the trees, etc.). I do wonder if the practice of worship at times serves the purpose of reminding and willfully looking, lest we forget what we're rooted to and take it all for granted, as the young will do to their human mother before fully maturing.

A good video on a complicated subject, especially when Nerthus was observed nearly a thousand years before the so called “Viking” period. From an English point of view, Friia/Frigg appears to have been the most important goddess with no evidence of Freya been know to the English. So to the English Frigg certainly may have been the mother goddess. Also good to see you putting the record straight on Friday been named after Frigg rather than Freya.

Thank you for this video, i really enjoyed it. In the story of Nerthus as she travels (pulled by sacred cows), bringing prosperity she is covered by a veil so the people cannot look upon her (its thought if you see her you will die i believe). Once she has finished bringing prosperity to the people and she tires she returns to her sacred grove on the island and then people help her clean/refresh herself in the water. Those people are then drowned, so she requires sacrifice of the higgest gift. For me I do see her as a mother goddess or a goddess of cycles. A time for life/prosperity followed by the cycle of death and returning to the Earth. This is how I see her and my opinion based on my interpretation of the single source we have so I am sure there's was more to her.

(Didn't even notice the eye thing, such big beautiful eyes). I get what you're saying. Sometimes humans personify things, including the earth and things of the earth. For instance, sun rays can be beautiful hair of a maiden. Rain can be tears. Wind can be a siren call. None of that suggests anymore about the thought process beyond the obvious simile. We attribute human quality to many things. Sometimes a metaphor is just a bit of poetic or dramatic license. Not all spiritual matters have an exact counterpart, b/c life offers varied influences.

And I wonder; in year 150 some of them leave their homelands and around 500 they are described as all being christians. What was their belives before they left. I think it clashes with the asatru in the 800 years and later the christianity again in around year 1000? There is a big focus on wikings But the Cimbers have been reiding,.... the goths, the people from Angel( and Saxons), the Jutes and so on, they all came from scandinavia. When did they suddenly became wikings. It seams that it have been their way of living long before that. ( In danish Jutes i called "jyder" as the people living in Jutland, and if you pronounce "Göter ( as we scandinavians calls the Goths) with a "j" sound (as the Sweeds does) you can hear where the name "jyder" originates from. This site is in danish, but you are quite skilled to work around that I am shure, and whith your suprime knowlegde you have probatly better information as well. What do you think of the parallels between hesiod's theogony and snorris second account of creation. From what I understand a lot of mideaval scholars held ancient greek poets and philosophers in pretty high regards. Do you think he could have added that bit because of the social, political or religious climate of his time? Sorry if this is addressed later in the video, I can't finish it right this minute but I wanted to ask about this before I forget

In Russland far east, they have Father Earch Raven - Kutch, and no female mother earth. In nors Russland Mother Earch, like Germanic or Greak Gea.

@@nocturnered281 far east is not slavic. Reindeer herder. They close to shamanic walking and have 3 wolds on their father tree. With Russland slavic everything is much more funny:)) Ural and Siberia - Mother Mokosh, very same with Frig. Great Spinner Lady. Middle Ru slavic Perin next to Thor, 3 wolds. Baltic Ru slavic Svarog next to Thor and a lot of beautiful girls like Freia and Valkyriers, 5 wolds. Nors Ru slavic like me, have Wotan in our mind and Perun is absolutely unacceptable. May be German connections in the past. All ru slavic use : mother raw soil ( not directly transfer) as a symbol of power, under of all gods. All slavic use swastik Solaris symbols, don't have diavol, used some kind of Runes as magic runatal.

@@yul498 nors Slavic hmm...
