I think the main thing that only really us Brits who live here love the most about this game is the realism. Everything is straight out of real life! All the cars were real models you'd see on English roads, all the shops and buildings were recognisable like William Hill and HSBC etc all the road signs, the adverts on the sides of the buses, the street layout of London! Even the phone boxes with the BT logos... Unfortunately this was the last time we got such immersion in a game set in England. We've had watch dogs and assassin's Creed that has the city landmarks but lacks all the real life little details this game used!

The representation of London is incredible, especially considering the hardware it was running on. I started working in London the year this game came out, twenty years later I’m infinitely more familiar with the city than I was back then but the real joy of this game is it’s now a snapshot of old London. It’s pre Elizabeth line, pre the Manhattan on Thames era of the Square Mile and just looking at the old cars and old brands tickles the nostalgia real hard. It’s a remarkable achievement.

My best memory of this game was my Dad's reaction. He knew London like the back of his hand. When he played the game he would get angry, and be saying, "That's not supposed to be a one- way street." "Your uncle spent time in that police station." "Sunrise are rubbish!" Context on that last one, my dad worked for a company whose rival was Sunrise... Sunrise vans are in the game.

Getaway have always felt intriguing, it’s like if Gta went British just not triple A. (I know rockstar is from Scotland). Guessing the close we get to that is Gta 4. I remember being so hyped for The Getaway back in the day because of the open-world phenomenon that GTA 3 started. I got the game and I never finished it and still haven’t finished it 20+ years later. It’s not that I didn’t like the game, I just never saw it through to the end for whatever ridiculous reason. One of my early gaming regrets that I need to mend. Man I’m glad I found this channel. It’s hitting the nostalgia sweet spot for me at the perfect time.

This and Black Moday are underrated gems they were ahead of their time back in the early 2000's so for anyone who hasn't played The Getaway and the second game The Getaway Black Monday i'd highly recommend giving them a try. They might be 20 year old video games but they're worth playing and they're worth the experience i've had endless amounts of fun playing both of those games over the years.

As a British person, the first part really made me laugh in a good way. Always love hearing how Americans perceive us through TV/Films/News and unfortunately our terrible government and the 50/50 liked/disliked Royal Family. Love that you’re a big fan of The Inbetweeners. It’s one of the must loved shows here. Recommendation that you watch the TV show Skins (the original UK version) Season 1-2 and 3-4 are the best seasons. It’s not a full on comedy series like The Inbetweeners but more of a comedy drama series following a group of teenagers/friends after leaving school and attending college/sixth form. I’m also the mod on r/TheGetaway and I’ve shared the video there if that’s ok with you. Always great to see someone look at The Getaway after all these years have passed + really love your content/videos!

I played this game as a 10 year old and absolutely loved it. I visited London the following summer and was freaking out at the bridge and castle that were in the game. At the time I couldn't imagine how games could look any better and I was convinced they'd make a sequel where I'd be able to drive past my house (couple of hours drive from London). You haven't watched any Guy Ritchie movies?! Man, if you liked this game's story, you gotta watch at least 'Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels', and 'Snatch' (the similarities are more stylistic rather than story, tho). I actually played Gangs of London before The Getaway, and much like this and Black Monday, it has some jank, but I couldn't stop playing back when I got it. The story is weak, but the characters (depending on the gang you choose) make it so funny. I do think it's more fun to play cuz they improved the gameplay on it a little, so I'd be interested in you covering it someday :) Anyway, I mostly feel the same way as you about this game. Story is pretty good until the abrupt ending, the setting is fun but gameplay needs more time in the oven, but still it stuck with me. The acting, the deliberate gameplay limitations, soundtrack, it had its own identity. The director of this game went on to direct LA Noire later on, and you can see the DNA shared between those 2 (and Black Monday, obviously), so I'd recommend you play that one if you haven't to see the evolution.

Same here, I only played Gangs of London and for a low-budget spin-off PSP title it's pretty fine (and man is it pain in the ass to emulate). While story doesn't matter, the cutscenes in the style similar to Max Payne definitely make the best part of it; and the mini-games from the bonus "Pub" menu. I've spent many hours playing the Pool/Snooker and that "territory war" strategy mini-game with the cards.

And about the cutscenes, that and the over-the-top characters made the game for me. I beat the game 5 times in a few, 1 for each gang, just to see the different characters (shame the missions were all shared between them, but that's understandable). For a little spin-off, that game had quite a lot of punch with all the content it had

Yep, you can see the tribulation of games with "open world" elements in their infancy: a large world, and nothing to do in it. The original Mafia has the same problem, only partly mitigated by an occasional single side mission in between two story-based ones, and a free roam mode with some wacky objectives. Happy to know you enjoyed the game nonetheless; if anything, it may be the gateway drug to Guy Ritchie's movies, which I strongly recommend (The Snatch and Lock, Stock before all others): don't miss them!

I can definitely say that for black Monday, they definitely improve on the gameplay front, at least where the driving is concerned. Vehicles don't skid as much on hard turns and the signals will turn on at junctions to show you what roads to take as opposed to just pointing a vague direction. Not to mention having the map available from the pause menu. Shooting and stealth stays mostly the same however.

I love your videos mate! As an insomniac they have been perfect for helping the long nights. Not to say they put me to sleep; far from it! They are just the perfect combination of soothing and informative. As for The Getaway, I remember my 7-8 year old mind being blown away by seeing a game based in the UK, not to mention the real car brands. Unfortunately I was too young to deal with the difficulty curve, having played GTA 3 first, it sadly didn’t offer enough for me beyond the first 2 missions. The most cool thing for me back then was... when you where in a chase with the police, they remember your car. If they see you again after the chase is over, and ur in the same car, they start to chase you again. You actually had to get a new car without the cops knowing, or otherwise they would find you again

Me and my Brother played this game when it came out 20 years ago, and while we have fond memories of it it’s not without its flaws. It’s main problem is that it tried too hard to be like a movie. If it had more things like a HUD and mini-map it would have been less immersive, but it would have been more fun. As for a remaster, extremely unlikely. I didn’t realise how many real brands besides the cars were in the game, and getting them all nowadays would not only be a nightmare, it would make the game unsellable when those rights expired. A getaway 3 has been in development hell for years. Maybe they should reboot the series with a different story but a sequel in a spiritual sense, and take itself less seriously. Fun fact: our mum caught us playing this game and was furious, partly because of the language and violence but mostly because at that time she worked in the building next door to the same police station you kill everybody in!

Then I played it and it ended up being the only game ever that I simply couldn't beat. The narrative was so compelling I wanted badly to finish, but couldn't beat one of the driving missions. There are hidden cars to find on free roam, there is a hidden mansion with super cars and a Go-kart to drive, there is even a Tank you can find to blow stuff up and cause havoc! Some of the cars are super hard to find, there is a super sweet Peugeot 306 with neons hidden in a super secret underground car park :)

I worked for SCEE when Team Soho were making this game. I remember in their office they had a map of London on the wall with pink highlighter showing the roads that were in the game. You can drive to the SCEE building in the game.

Never cared for Crime/GTA games, but this one I bought by accident back in while I was in the Marines and loved it. Only game I can play with that genre

Albeit not the Getaway 1, you did mention the difficulty of the missions, One of the most relatable scenes EVER in a movie, is in Superbad(2007) when Michael Cera is playing videogames and rage quits on The Getaway 2. This series is insanely difficult.

I use to play this for hours. Stealing buses and police range rovers. It was so different from gta but so gta like. That gray Volvo was iconic! The Getaway 2 wasn't on my mind.

You should watch Snatch. It's an insanely good film. Getaway always reminded me of it, to an extent.

The Getaway was a good idea on paper. The gameplay was what made me easily frustrated/put me off from finishing it. I get immersion thing the devs wanted. But it just wasn’t feasible for it’s time

The flash of memories with this one! Man, the Depot! The frustration!! lol, he's right about the stealth, I thought the game glitched out on my first play through way back when, what's more frustrating was the drive over. It was a timed drive, and you literally had to drive across the whole map!! I did the same with the triads, and the yardees (wedge the car), otherwise, you'd get your ass handed to you, as you barely have time to regen with enemies coming on all sides!! This game could definitely use a proper remake today, it was already ahead of it's time back then.
