What more classic backup gun is there than the M1911A1, beloved by GIs as a backup to their M1 Carbines, M1 Garands, BARs, and tanks? Today I'm running an April 1945 production original military M1911A1 at the match. Note that this gun puts me in the "Big 5" division, so I have to start each stage with only 5 rounds in the magazine.
The 1911 is not a beginner's pistol, but it can certainly deliver if you can run it!

@@WALTERBROADDUS Obrez, a reference to the "Mosin-Nagant Obrez" an M1895 Mosin Nagant 3-line rifle of Russian (and later Soviet) lineage, the Obrez name came about because of a Russian nickname for the shortened "pistol" form of such a rifle. Extremely loud to fire, and not that ballistically interesting since the long barrel was actually being used to accelerate the projectile with the slower-burning smokeless powder they had to use at the time due to less refined metallurgical science and less refined engineering typical of that time period (mass production of Steel itself, and the concept of interchangeable parts being developments within the same century as that rifle's design). If you want an American parallel to the Obrez in form factor if not actual design, you need only look at the cut-down rifle that was most commonly called a "Mare's leg" in the days of the American wild west that has since been etched into cinematographic history by great actors such as John Wayne.

Nostalgia, kind of. That was indeed what the Army gave my father as his BUG. Happily for him, they also gave him the much more effective radar-controlled 90mm as his primary weapon, and even better, a half-track to haul it out to the range at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds for, as it happens, proving. Nostalgia for me, because that’s pretty much how my father was dressed (minus the helmet) for gardening, right through to the 1980s. Apparently 1911s weren’t the only durable and long-lived GI equipment. Well, no holster, no 1911 for gardening.

Im a glock guy through and through but the more i have shot a 1911 in 45acp... the more i have fallen in love. I was shooting a head sized plate at 30 yards and pinging it every time. I tried it with my glock and i was hitting it maybe 7/10. I picked up a cheap rock island gi 45 and worked on it myself a bit and now it feeds hollowpoints (carry the ranger t +p, expands to over 1.04", crazy), feeds using cheap $9 usgi mags, $8 korean mags, wilson, 10 rd powermags, mecgar. Its my go to range gun and serves as backup to the glocks. I keep it as my night stand gun. Just shoots great. Thanks to the cheap ria and tisas 1911s... there is a whole new generation that will keep shooting them. I never would have spent $1500 on a "acceptable for the gun community" 1911, but the cheap ria is my favorite gun and now that im in love with the platform i will pick up a more expensive one.

The sights on the GI pistol don't do a shooter any favors. I've shot and owned a number of 1911s over the years and haven't ever had issues with reliability. To be fair, most of them were capable of only mediocre accuracy, but they would pretty much always hit a torso at 10 yards, and that's what they were designed for. The only 1911 I currently own is a Wilson CQB which has never hiccupped and is also extremely accurate, but you're gonna pay for that. I no longer EDC a 1911 because ammunition technology has advanced to the point that .45 ACP doesn't have much edge over 9mm, but I still wouldn't feel cheated if I had to fight for my life with a 1911.

I like the G.I. sights for quick instinctual point shooting. I just look over the slide and use the abbreviated sights for a quick alignment reference. This is really only good for coarse shooting within 15 or so yards though. Or "Good enough for government work" as they say!
@gameragodzilla
@gameragodzilla 2 ай бұрын
The A1 sights were still a big improvement on the original M1911 WW1 era sights, which were barely perceptible. Granted, standard doctrine back then was point shooting, so you'd only use the sights for precise shots at range, where the small sights that you needed to take time to line up wasn't a big deal. It was only later when people realized sights were good for all ranges that higher visibility sights were invented. Also, I still think .45ACP is better than 9mm, especially with modern bullet technology that also improves .45 to the point where Winchester Ranger T can expand upwards to a full 1" in diameter. Built my 1911 custom off a Para-Ordnance frame with some 15+1 magazines and it also takes care of any capacity issues.

Just for informational purposes, when I got my USGI surplus 1911A1 (shipped early 1945, Ithaca) I fully intended to shoot it some. I got a replacement spring kit from Wolff, and the new firing pin and recoil springs were nearly 1/4" longer than the ones I removed. I figure the springs were a cheap and simple way to keep the gun from beating itself up if the old springs were to give up.

My Dad, a flight mechanic in the Army Air Corp in WWII, talked about the arguments among the soldiers about the 1911. One was that the speed of the round was so slow that would you be able to see the bullet if you fired it out of a P-47 at full throttle? Never heard if anyone tried it. The other big one was it wasn't accurate because of the floating barrel. That was disproved by a gunnery Sargeant given training course with one. The Sargeant had broken his right wrist in a bar fight while on a weekend pass. He showed his class how accurate it was while placing every shoot on bullseye shooting left-handed.

From a physics standpoint, it wouldn't work that way when firing a bullet from a plane. The bullet wouldn't be firing from a stationary position. It would coincide with the same momentum at which you are flying. So from the shooters perspective, it wouldn't be any different than firing at a target while stationary. Having said that, it is possible to view a 45ACP slug in air on it's way to the target. Much easier to notice on longer range shots. But it is possible to see with the naked eye. I'm also not quite sure what you are referring to when you say the 1911 has a "Floating Barrel"? The barrel and slide are locked together while firing. Like most all other short recoil action pistols.
@dwaneanderson8039

Another aspect of supposed 1911 unreliability is lubrication. 1911s (like most all metal guns) need lube to function reliably. This was a known thing back in the day, with even the 6000 endurance test leaving room for the gun to be relubed every 1000 rounds or so, since that was within the operator's control and was just something you regularly did, like brushing your teeth. However, with modern polymer framed pistols which are a lot more tolerant of lack of lubrication, people have largely gotten lazy and just run their guns dry which you can get away with on a Glock (although it'll still run best with lube) but you can't get away with it on a 1911. Not only does metal on metal have more friction, but there's also a lot more surface contact points on a 1911 than more modern pistol designs. With the gun lubed, the 1911 is perfectly reliable, even if it's dirty.
@arnox4554

Even that, I might disagree with. And I've seen lots of Glocks jam just as much as the next wonder-nine. They really are not the miracle guns people make them out to be. Also, no external safety. :P (No, the trigger "safety" is not a safety.)

If one were to open a museum of good tactile feel, would a 1911 be up there? Or an early Thompson gun? They just look like they'd feel so satisfying just to rack the slide/bolt on

I have an Ithaca Gun WW2 1911A1 and the slide is indeed very smooth - but the trigger is not that great.
@xb0xisbetter

The 1911 has one of the best triggers in any gun ever designed, even without a trigger job. With a trigger job though, they're just about unparalleled, like breaking a rod of glass. Very smooth, very crisp and satisfying. The fact that the trigger moves straight forward and back is one of the reasons people really like flat-faced triggers on other platforms. The only guns I own that come close are old Smiths, but those have no tactility to speak of ... they're just insanely light and smooth.

I have talked to guys that were issued 1911s in the 1980’s. They all complained that the pistols were rattle traps and they were afraid the pistol would fly apart in their hand while shooting. They were reliable but soldiers couldn’t hit jack with them. That’s not the 1911s fault. I don’t even blame the sights. Soldiers were not well trained on pistol marksmanship. I can shoot bullseye targets all day at 15 yards even with the old GI sights. I’m not even a great shooter, better than average but I practice and shoot 3 times a week.

A Walther P-38 should do pretty well. It's a good gun; so much so that Beretta took the design and used it as the basis for their famous M92 pistol. The P38 was definitely one of the better pistols of WWII.

Honest question, because I see you're a left-handed shooter. I have a Commander length 1911 that sometimes locks back in the middle of a magazine, so my knuckle is hitting the slide release I think, or something is happening, because all I have to do is hit the slide release, it goes directly into battery and fires with no issue. Any ideas what I could be doing and how to fix it? I do have XL hands but don't know if that makes it better or worse.

Had 2 brand new 1911s. Neither was reliable. One was more or less a single shot---extractor hole was off. The other maybe stretching to call it a 1911. A Series 80 Officers Model. After about 700 rounds---mostly 185 grain cast target loads, the cheap, flimsy recoil plus broke. Fixed it by having a rod installed. At round 756 the staked front sight flew off. Sits in a case at home unused since. There once was a saying "Only accurate rifles are interesting." I think "only reliable pistols are interesting or useful" would be another. I know its blasphemy to cast doubt upon old slabsides like lots of guys in the Army did in the 80s before Beretta was adopted. Since then it has become a legend. Anyway, all you need is one round to go off and the massive knockdown power of that slow moving pumpkin ball would take out half a division of enemy troops. Imagine what modern expanding ammo could do. Forgive me as I have sinned.

Ol' Slab-sides did what was asked of it, as long as YOU did your part, Ian...as John Browning intended! With few modifications, the 1911-style auto pistol is STILL one of the finest defensive pistols in the world, bar none. What mods? The obvious, of course - good sights, a decent trigger, and "de-horning" to make the edges smooth under your hands, while maintaining a solid grip. Not bad, for a 113 year old war-horse...and the newer 2011 styled guns solve solve ammo capacity problems, WHERE that's really a problem..... I'm in Dick Fairburn's camp, which follows Col. Cooper's thoughts on caliber. 9 mm is adequate, with good modern bullets plus velocity. But .45's with the same factors are better, not "just as good". A light-weight Commander length 2011 in .45, set up as above , is the best we'll get until the Phaser pistol with "stun" settings comes along.... 😊

One thing that happens is that you anticipate the recoil and lean into the gun - before it fires - this is called "Bucking" the gun. You don't want to do either that or jerking the trigger. You "Squeeze" the trigger and the gun should surprise you ever time it goes off. - USMC - 1911A1, Expert, 1971 .
