One of the things that I am driven to do is to create a foundation to empower young women to become entrepreneurial like I have. This video brought me to tears because it so clearly matches my future vision. Thank you for creating it and putting it into the most simplistic terms - with only words. Extremely powerful. I'll be passing this message around to as many people as I can.

Oh, excellent. Made me cry a bit, too. So many women - girls - could do so much if only they weren't being beaten down by poverty and society. This program is an excellent and intelligent first step.

I totally agree with you. I do not understand why there are so many negative comments on this video. Education and empowerment is the key and even if only one girl can succeed. it's a great achievement! if 100 of them do, they can start to change the world.

This video is fantastic. I saw it for the first time in my Graphic Design class when my teacher was explaining the power and unharnessed potential of typography. I am inspired. The designer of this video deserves a huge HUZZAH, and the content has really impacted me. (It gave me goosebumps!) The video was informal enough to feel genuine, but formal enough to demand action. It also didn't attempt to tear out hearts and squeeze out sympathy, but instead sent an honest message of hope. Thanks.

@HonestGirlScouts The best part about the Girl Effect movement is that it's not 1, large movement... it's hundreds of thousands of small movements started by girl champs like you. It's not about us picking one girl to give a cow - it's about millions of girls connecting with their counterparts overseas and helping gain access to education, assets, economic voice & more. The ripple of this affects everyone - not just girls. We don't want anyone's $; we just want everyone to direct $ to girls.

@syneobeat: I, as an American girl, would think so. However, after meeting many people (girls, women, men, children) from other countries you or I may never want to live in, I realize many people want to stay in their homeland or return to it after an education/business. Given the premise of each girl growing up to contribute to the society, making it better, less people would want to leave, least of all the educated who want to make a difference for their families-many of whom can't leave

smallchange, I have and it's such an amazing book! There is a desperate need for more individuals tackling conflict and poverty in the way Mortenson does. Seeing this video reminds me of Jahan towards the end, when she walks up to him right in the middle of the village meeting and asks for the money to go to college. Talk about inspiring :) The girl effect is no lie. By utilizing all individuals in a society, but giving EACH member a chance, we make it more effective+healthy+prosperous

The early part about wars reminded me of something said by Sally Field about how if mothers ruled the world, there would be no more wars (including say the Falklands War, when Mrs. Thatcher was UK prime minister and the Yom Kipper War, where Golda Meir was the prime minister of Israel).

This video was very moving to me. I praise the women of the world who want to better themselves with an education to create a life for themselves. Oprah's show was deeply moving to me as well, and I was glad that she did that show today. I am a 19 year old college female, and I'm proud to be studying for what I am. I can't depend on someone else to make my earnings for me, that's all me. Even if it changes nothing, it'll change the life of a single person, and in that, there is meaning.

Many people might oppose you but you stand up for the right thing even if you are standing alone. finally after trying so hard some one who can make your goal into practice hears your voice. I am a girl who goes to high school. I can help other people in poverty by convincing them on this comment. PLEASE SPEAK UP FOR WHAT IS RIGHT MAKE THE GIRL EFFECT A REALITY!!!

the statement makes perfect sense. An educate girl will also educate her children both boys and girl. Education will help them raise out of poverty . Also in this countries girls are the one who spend most of the time with kids home. Her luck of education will mean also lack of education for her kids. Her lack of access to an income means also lack of respect from her family who just see her as another mouth to feed. Luck of access to money means early marriage, many children etc

I wish it was this simple but educating women in developing countries is not going to solve the problem here. There are many other economic/sexist/racist/classist systems at work and simply giving poor women a better education is not going to fix these problems. If it did, developed nations would not still be plagued with them.

@bethwall Hi, there - The Girl Effect is not associated or related in any way to the Catholic church, nor are we aware of "Agenda 21" or supportive of killing children. Quite the opposite. The Girl Effect is a movement that's all about empowering adolescent girls - you see, they are uniquely positioned to end poverty for themselves & their families. I encourage you to check out the several hundred reports in the More Resources section of our website: girleffect . org / learn / more-resources.

I saw this video at a conference and could not stop thinking about it, which I suppose was the point. As a women and gender studies major, a woman and a citizen of the world I found it very inspirational. If more charities had ads as personal and effective as this, I think they would get a lot more donations.
@girleffect13 жыл бұрын
@HonestGirlScouts Actually, our GlobalGiving page is just a fundraising tool for people who want to donate to projects on the ground. None of the $ donated goes to the Girl Effect movement - it is distributed among girl-focused projects on the ground. Those include Save the Children’s school fund for girls in Bangladesh, BRAC’s safe spaces & savings programs in Tanzania, the UN Foundation’s Berhane Hewan project, The Adolescent Girls’ Legal Defense Fund, and Fundacion Paraguaya.

My point in highlighting my Arabic roots too was to emphasize that I come from the most patriarchal societies too. Unfortunately whenever societal ill's are being talked about there is always a move to note them in cultures far removed from western society as traditionally it has been made to appear more forward mocing and "civilized" than the rest of the world so I understand your sentiment. But I think that the reality of the situation is that if you are a woman in many African societies...

I believe there is a "boy effect" video and agree with the fact that a healthy "people effect" could do society well. Girls and women, though large in number, have long been reduced in influence. Despite some of the stigma of its corporate affiliations, the heart of this initiative is in the right place. P(e)ace

@jansenhoganmusic Not at all. The Girl Effect exists to help everyone. And everyone includes boys. Indeed, better lives for girls mean better lives for everyone, including their brothers, fathers, future husbands and future sons. When you improve a girl’s life through education, health and opportunity, these changes have a positive ripple effect. As an educated mother, an active citizen and a prepared employee, she is the most influential force in her community to break the cycle of poverty.

@irianthul it already is that way for most guys. They don't get told by the villages that they live in that having a baby is the only useful thing they can do. And in these places around the world where hiv is such a huge problem, they typically aren't being backed into a corner where selling their bodies is the only way that they can scrape together enough money to support the families that they were basically forced to have. And, women in these places are the ones taking care of their kids.
@yentalin1234513 жыл бұрын
@tansen2 The point is that if the girl goes to school and gets an education, she will be less likely to make any decisions that could lead to her contracting aids. She would then be able to educate other girls on the topic and they would be safer to. Also, this video isn't saying that men can't change things. It is simply saying that woman can too.
