How old r u? I agree, I too think it's strange how someone would not notice. I'm pretty sure I would. But that's me as an adult. Keep in mind that young ppl don't have the same logical thinking. I was a teen during the msn era and that was a very scetchy time. The way ppl talked n behaved is quite different from today where ppl r more aware of trolls, bots, filters and just generally more critical towards ppl and their agendas. I was pretty stupid as a teen and with all the hormones and excitement of having a boyfriend at that age that can cloud your mind and make you more blind to things, I can't rly blame them for being fooled. Also it was normal to take selfies like that, showing only parts of ur face (like those iconic emo myspace pics), being a little mysterious not showing your whole life on social media etc. I think most ppl have been trolled in some way at some point in their life. Tho this was a bit extreme lol...

Hey now, this isn’t a situation to cause embarrassment and bottle it up, especially at the age the victims were. Just because Gemma isn’t a cis heterosexual man doesn’t mean she didn’t lie and predate and full-on a**ault these young girls. Survivors should not feel like they were “stupid” and can’t come forward. It’s all the perpetrator’s fault. Abuse comes in many sizes, genders, and ages.

Very young, naive, in their hormonally challenged years ... a different era, before everyone, or most, became knowledgeable, jaded and suspicious... Wishful thinking can go a long way. Additionally, it would be unbelievable to them, that, their friend could do such a thing! We can hardly believe it in hindsight, with full knowledge and mature minds. I'm sure the girls, at age 15, didn't have a clue, at least not initially.

There are two fascinating things about this story. The first is how on earth Gemma managed to pull this off in the first place. When you think about it, the scam was quite sophisticated for a young girl to pull off. Yet in other ways, she was quite naive because as the reporter said, after she assaulted that girl, she could simply have had her male egos disappear and the police would most likely never have guessed what happened. But she doubled down on it, admitting to an assault, and then made it worse by claiming an asault happened to her real self and claimed compensation for it. That seems to be at odds with the cleverness of the con that she managed to pull off. The other fascinating thing is that the girls were so naive. If it had been in the 70s this happened, I could quite understand it. I was very naive in those days as a teenager. But this is the 2,000s and girls now and then, were quite wordly wise in general. Also the fact that "Connor" did not speak ever but communicated via text. That is the most bizarre thing but it appeared to be acceptable to this girl. Also that the girls didn't recognise that it was their friend. I don't think any of my friends at that age could have disguised themselves to the extent that I could not recognise them.

It's like a mixture of something being insidious and the benality of it all, totally fooled. When a lot of things happen you look back on them and think how did the get away with that it all seems so obvious now. It's like Shipman who was fooling people for years and getting away with murder, it took getting away with it for a long time and eventually making an even stupider mistake for people to get suspicious and to get caught.

Oh, you reckon she _knew what she was doing?_ Interesting theory. See, there was me thinking that she was just doing all these separate behaviours at random, like dressing up as men, creating facebook accounts for them, and messaging her friends as these fake alter egos, and it was just some enormous coincidence that they all happened to align to the point where it deceived her friends, led to her being able to meet them in person, over and over again, to a situation wherein she could have sexual contact with them. But, you think all of these things might be linked, and they were all part of her plan? I can't say that this idea had occurred to me at all. But seriously now, sarcasm over; here's a gold medal for stating the absolute fucking obvious.

Worth remembering that these young vulnerable girls were conned & sexually assaulted by a very disturbed individual. We can all speculate on what they shouldn’t/should have noticed or done, but that’s simply victim derogation at its worst. You can be both at the same time, I had an iq test done and put me well above average however one particular test I was considered borderline as in bottom 10%. So I am sort smart but slow at routine tasks or something like that. It actually makes sense to me know because doing things like copying what a teacher wrote on a blackboard I couldn't keep up but most people could.

Yeah a learning disability doesn't mean low IQ. It just means bad at another group of skills, so dyspraxia bad at maths, dyslexia bad at writing and spelling, ADHD bad at concentrating etc. I definitely think her lawyer used this as an excuse and so people who don't know about disabilities would be softer on her.

I refuse to believe Gemma has trouble understanding social situations because she was able to navigate being 3 different people for a long time.
