The thesis of this episode of Gumball, as best I can tell: "Don't stay in toxic relationships, but try to understand where the other party is coming from before you act in a way you might regret." This is _incredibly good_ advice. Darwin isn't even shown as having the 'right' way to deal with the situation; had Gumball not intervened Jamie might have kept going. _This_ can be read as "If you're in an abusive relationship and you don't know how to resolve the issue, seek outside assistance," which is also good advice. And of course all of this is ignoring the fact that vanishingly few children (the primary audience, remember) are going to have the patience to hold out as long as Darwin did; most would react to someone like Jamie exactly the way Gumball did towards the conclusion. TL:DR; Please stop selectively ignoring elements of the media in order to half-assedly virtue signal towards people who need more substantial help than you taking offense on their behalf.

The main message of this episode is not that abusive relationships are okay. Darwin is constantly criticized for his mindset, and ends up getting punished for staying in the relationship. Also, they never make the relationship out to be good in any capacity, so there's no reason to think that the episode is cool with abusive relationships. And before anyone says it shouldn't be in a cartoon for kids, thinking like that is selling kids short. They'll be able to pick up on messages that aren't preachy and in their faces.

@justjoking4223
@justjoking4223 4 жыл бұрын
@@WillNyeTheScienceGuy11 if kids pick up any bad behavior from this episode, its because they didn't actually watch the full episode. Gumball goes on and on about how Darwin needs to stand up for himself, and Jamie says that she was wrong for doing what she did. The episode was very clear about why this relationship was a problem. So even if kids did emulate bad behavior from this, it's hardly the episode or the writers fault. The reason people have an issue with the episode, is because they didn't take the time to think about what was actually happening in it. They just hopped on a bandwagon and made baseless accusations. You can not like the episode, but saying that it gives a message that promotes bad behavior just isn't true.

I can understand people hating this episode. This episode reminds me of the seriously messed up relationship of Beck and Jade from Victorious. That personally made me not like the show for pushing such toxic relationships to people. This episode does the same thing as that in Victorious. Which shows a very very toxic relationship that no body should want. Now I personally think that Victorious was worse since that show showed teenagers in a worse situation. And the show does get points since The Bully does realize she's wrong. Jade never does.

Moonstone That’s an ignorant statement. Yeah it’s a kids show so what ? Kids aren’t the drooling, snot nosed, booger eating, cheesy fingers having, saliva smelling little monsters people make it seem. It’s not wrong to have them use their own brains and challenge their own morality by giving them complex topics to decipher. That’s why most cartoons nowadays are so mind numbingly nonsensical to the point where it’s almost insulting to watch. Also, writers more often than not have ONE clear narrative to get across, and if you get it wrong, you can’t get mad at the writers because they don’t control your brain. It’s up to YOU, to figure out the narrative. You can’t blame other people because YOU interpreted something wrong. That’s like getting mad at the teacher because YOU couldn’t understand the central idea of the given text properly; in turn failing the test. That’s YOUR problem, not anyone else’s. Also, I don’t think you know how to use rhetorical questions properly.

Moonstone I’m sorry you had to go through that, but A) don’t get snappy with me because I’m not the one who abused you, and B) my point still stands. If you misinterpret something wrong, that is nobody else’s fault but yours. Edit : & while you do have a point that it IS possible for kids to misinterpret the message because nobody is perfect, it is then YOUR job as their guardian to clarify certain things; not riot against the show because “My kid misinterpreted what you said so your show is terrible!”. You can’t expect everyone to understand everything on the first try, but you also can’t expect people to PREACH to you through the screen because that is lazy writing. I’d rather a writer challenge my ability to think for myself than preach to me.

So basically... In this episode Darwin has an abusive relationship with Jamie and because of it he is damaged, gumball keeps saying being in that relationship is bad, Jamie realizes what she does is bad, so everything with abusive relationships is bad. So then people say this is a bad episode because showing something so bad without actually saying in screen written in giant words it's bad, makes the children think being in a abusive relationship is a good idea... Welp, no matter how many times Darwin is damaged because of it, how many times Gumball says it's or not even the final realization tells that it is bad, this shows being in that kind of relationship is good! How? Taking from Gecko's argument: Jamie is very clearly shown to be in the wrong. And in a way, so is Darwin. Gumball constantly tells him that he should *_not_* stay silent, and he's hurting himself and other people by doing so. In the end, Gumball is the one to turn her around by not staying silent, and she herself disagrees with her actions. That you cannot and should not force someone to love you. All around, it states everywhere that being abusive in a relationship is bad, and staying silent and doing nothing and staying with that abusive person is bad. So again, how?

I think the moral of the episode is kind off like this: Kids (especially the bullies) lack the experience they need to properly deal with complex emotional situations and it's showing how to sort of handle it. Like, Jamie isn't some drunk that has had 30 years to learn how to deal with life. She's an, at most, 14yo that was raised in a household run by the giant sponge. No one seems to have stood up to her so she had no reason to assume her actions where bad but she did figure it out eventually because of just how scared Gumball was. It's an example of kids who deal with the same issues as Jamie to be like "Oh yeah, those kids I get money from really don't like me and want to avoid me" and they can internalize it as they get the message from a perspective they might be empathic to, Gumball and Darwin. Darwin and Gumball are sort of the same in this. Darwin is way too passive while Gumball is too antagonistic. I'm sure itd have been over sooner if Gumball asked or explained to Jamie how he felt.

Furthermore she's a 14y/o (or younger) who struggles intellectually and uses intimidation and physical strength to compensate for her not being very bright. Like we all knew a kid who was like this, and I think the way they portray that character is actually really realistic. One of the things I like about TAWOG is that all the characters are deeply flawed but still extremely likeable.

Which isn’t definitely NOT ok. If you feel like your life is in danger in a relationship, you should try to get out of that relationship as SOON AS POSSIBLE. And I don’t like that Darwin was ignoring Gumball’s advice to break up with Jamie because he saw that she was being narcissistic and malicious with Darwin. And surprisingly this is not the first that Darwin or Gumball are in a freaky relationship episode Remember the Dress Gumball only had to say that he was Gumball to end the episode but he preferred to be treated as a woman

I guess this Episode make me hated Jamie from TAWOG. She is really worse than Nelson Muntz from The Simpsons and Trent Boyett from South Park. I guess She is should be get Arrested.

Your review surprised me I didn't expect to see someone actually like the episode and it did open my eyes a little to not review some things based on my morals but I still don't like the message of this episode but I also see how your opinion of The Girlfriend make sense

I think this episode is so hated because of its depiction of an abusive relationship, and the terrible advice given throughout the whole thing. Near the end, everyone goes off the deep end, so it kinda creepy too

First thing's first, before I start the video... People hated this episode? I remember it being super funny personally... But, on the other hand, I don't really interact with people on the internet soooo I dunno. Okay, on with the video

This whole Episode was forced in my opinion. Instead of forcing Darwin or anyone to date Jamie... Well let's just say this episode could've been done right instead of the creepiness D:

The only reason Darwin got punched and his legs broken like spagetti noodles wasn't because he spoke up against Jamie. It was because he decided to speak up *AFTER* Gumball already took action for him. Like I get that she says "if you ignore me or break up with me there will be serious consequences" but she doesn't say Darwin can't speak up for himself or tell her how he feels. Jay literally says in this video that if Darwin had taken gumball's advice and spoke up earlier then this episode would have been resolved in a matter of mins. Ngl tho I feel like this episode in general could have been handled a whole lot better expecially the ending since gumball goes against his own advice and tells the hospitalized Darwin "yeah you we're right. All you did have to do was stay quiet and everything would have been alright". Also OF COURSE THE DANG EPISODE IS OVER EXAGGERATED! JAMIE LITERALLY FARTS ON A SENTIENT ICE CREAM 😂 not only that but she also beats up Richard and spells out "SORRY" with the school faculty members who then ask "is she gone?" If this show was more realistic she would obviously not be able to get away with that or even have the strength to do that duh. Also I'm not gonna lie I found Richard's performance funny just because I feel like that's something I'd probably do to my friend just to mess with them if they were dating a girl but I'll be it not to the extent richard did. By the way are we all going to ignore that *nipples* is a word that was said in this episode?

Why this episode is so hated is because it supposedly teaches kids to be silent in toxic relationships, and you should let the toxic partner figure it out for themselves. Since this is a terrible lesson, and is the theme of the episode, not just a side thing that will likely go unnoticed by young kids, the episode is then hated.
