The ending was clever in my opinion, due to the fact of how Richard helped gumball. Richard was never going to be the "action hero " parent, that's Nicole's job. But he was himself at the end. Rather than running out and saving gumball, he's able to calm him down enough to get him back. That's what kind of parent Richard is : the supportive one

And gumball vase an energetic nice kid in season 1 but becomes a self centered narcissistic asshole in later seasons!?🤔 the only consistent thing in this show is the massage of censorship and debate over what to expose ourselves and what to keep out,"the authority"showcases what happens when someone tries to keep harm out of a Child's life and therefore hindering their development by eliminating the:"trial and error"process,"the safety"deals with the dangers of the world on what they are and how Much safety is required,"the video game"is specifically deals with kids being exposed to something subjective and how it effects them and how parents intend to deal with it, but rather than go to the route of:"it's life deal with it", the episode calls the parents out on their neglect, and said they should teach and warn the kids about the dangers, rather than keeping it out of their life completely, it's no"leap of faith"if you aren't even allowed to Leap.(even tough the episode heavily implies the"think of the children"sentiment is just an excuse for the parents to get the kids out of their hair because their nothing more than a nuisance to them.) heck one of the last episode deals with conformity and regulations with debate over how much an individuality should remain and when we should act as a hive mind. Or some SHIT. The point is if we deconstructing a gumball episode there's more often then not the most constant variable is the censorship lessons and where it could be applied along with how because A:in a bizarre world like gumball censorship is the greatest evil. B:there vase an episode where they Literally go trough a dumping ground of mistakes and kinks in the armor ranging from physical human inventions,internet memes,consumer products,trends,characters,freaks of evolution,terrible ideas and so fourth. If we look at this episode it's about how fare over the line can parent and child relationship can be pushed and the limits of how each side can go. So if gumball have a constant definitive trait or massage, it's definitely:"Censorship!"

@Farflung Clown Nicole only left Gumball in the desert because she knew he would find his way back home and she was trying to inspire him to be competitive. She tried to buy corned beef to save money. In case you didn't notice, the Wattersons are a lower class family that can just barely afford the basic needs. And her "threatening to break Gumball's legs" was nothing more than her venting frustration, she didn't actually mean it. Yes, I admit that Nicole is not the best example of a good mother, but she is genuinely caring, supportive and motherly. Which is why she would never refuse to feed her sons.

@@li-5026 I grant you that Nicole is a flawed parent when it comes to favoritism. Richard's favorite child is Darwin, but he doesn't blatantly show his favoritism. However, you have to remember the context to Nicole's parenting. Her own parents didn't respect her autonomy and never gave her any affection or approval because they valued achievements above all else. This upbringing instilled an elitist mindset in her subconscious which makes her want to nurture the potential of her family members. However, she does love all her children equally. And despite Anais being her golden child, she doesn't neglect Gumball. The reason she tries to instill ambition in him is because she wants him to be happy and is worried where he might end up because he doesn't have Anais' gifted intellect or Darwin's natural charisma. Also, the reason she rushed to hug Anais is not because she favors her, but because she's the youngest and the most fragile. I don't think this is a bad episode, I love the overall message and the song, it just needed to be a little different in some areas. First, we don't need to straight up know every good thing Richard has done to see the kids as ungrateful, so maybe make them act harsher towards Richard, maybe due to jealously of their friends and their cool parents. Second, having a character regret their actions because they are being punished by a third party is TERRIBLE, that means the character isn't legitimately sorry for what they did, they just want the punishment to end. Gumball and Darwin should have been forced to feel bad by their own guilt, not by Nicole taking their basic needs away from them.

However, that pisses the people that made fun of him off, so they lead them to that junkyard with that really dangerous pit, and Gumball and Darwin get trapped. Richard sees them and saves them, proving to the bullies that he may not be the model dad but he will do anything for his kids. There!! Was that so hard, writers??? No child neglect, no OOC shit. A different idea for this episodes plot. Gumball and Darwin are joking around with friends about the stupid stuff Richard does, Richard overhears this and when they get home they find out he's locked himself in the shed because he thinks he nothing more than an embarrassment to the family. Even when the boys try to apologize and say that they love him for his weirdness he doesn't buy it. Nichole has to leave for a few days and can't get a babysitter for some reason and because Dad won't come out that leaves the kids fending for themselves. honestly this episode was a mistake that couldve been fixed given they had time to realize their flaws. the conflict could've remained the same, but maybe the girls misinterpreted gumball and darwin. like maybe richard only hears the bad stuff they said, but near the end they list his positive traits like "yeah sure he's lazy, but he's honestly a really supportive person." so the entire time gumball and darwin HAD positive thoughts on their father, but their family only heard the negative aspects...thus making gumballs anger because "we are telling the truth" believable while giving the girls valid reasons to be upset. this episode bombed, but it had potential. the concept is there, and its honestly a really great lesson. they just couldn't nail it in properly.

With the mention of "The Authority" I think that that is probably another of the best episodes since I saw that and learned something besides the actual message, "Don't put a spoon in the microwave (and probably not ice cream either)" (I was young)

What's not considered is the fact they DON'T tell us what Richard told the two. We know he's not the best at interpreting stuff and he's kind of sensitive. Richard could have easily exaggerated to Nicole about what happened causing her to be more mad than she regularly would be. Unfortunately this episode doesn't just revolve around a conflict of misunderstanding so it was never touched on. Another possible reason why they only made a significant appearance once.

@nateroo14864 жыл бұрын
I think there's a misconception here. The scene at the table was brought on by Richard came home upset over what Gumball and Darwin said. He probably told Nicole and Anais that they were badmouthing him and not just not being unable to find anything particularly positive about him. So Nicole and Anais are going into the situation with that knowledge. So then when they don't deny it and only says that it's the truth, that would make them mad. As for the "how were we supposed to know he taught him how to walk", he's their father. That's implied that his parents taught him how to walk and talk. I'm not defending the episode, it's not the best, but that's where my problem is in the review.

Idk, the episode is good imo, and everything works for me. I think it has to do with the way I was raised, but where I live it's common to "deny" some stuff to children so they can learn a thing or two (of course the episode took to the extreme, but it's a cartoon, it's okay). In conclusion, I didn't know this episode was so hated, it's emotional to me and it hits home!

Anais and Nicole are honestly insufferable objectively. It's such cruelty to neglect your kids for an mistake. It's more childish than anything else. Richard is horrible at actually doing things other than emotional support, he's a good man and a good dad but not a good guardian. Poor Gumball and Darwin, punished for the truth. Gumball gets progressively more "cruel" towards Richard due to the bull put on them. He's incompetent but they should be not be punished for it.
@missmax24924 жыл бұрын
Don't get me wrong, I like the episode but I always kinda had my nitpicks. It's got such a great depiction of Richard, he's a sweetheart the whole way through and I don't blame him for feeling bad, I would feel bad if my own kid couldn't tell his friends that I was at all useful in their life but I would not blame the kid much, he doesn't blame them or clap back, he just becomes sad. I can understand being offended for Richard and all but villainizing literal children feels for ass-backward. I wish that Gumball and Darwin began to just be super snarky towards Nicole and Anais at the end. Like, they end up back at school and they have a similar conversation and they say like "Well, mom starved us all week and wouldn't let us shower so yeah, I like dad more" or something. There's no backlash for their actions and that annoys me

Oh God, this episode... Such an unpleasant viewing experience. One of many simple fixes to this is to NOT make Nicole and Anais hypocritical. Also, the attempts at comedy on the episode's part are utterly killed by that godawful setup. The song, while well-done, doesn't belong in the episode because of the horrible sense of escalation, or lack thereof. If I have to sit through five minutes of total hypocrisy and toxicity, I shouldn't be expected to feel sad for something all of a sudden. The systematic degradation of Gumball as a character in an attempt to put him in the wrong despite being 100% correct in his observation of his father is yet another disgusting tactic from this episode. Also, it's yet even more evidence of the massive contrivance that the episode is guilty of. By the way, it's interesting that you say the episode makes you really think about its structure and how to ultimately feel about it. Me personally, I say it's the opposite. Between the points that I've brought up, _The Hero_ pretty much dictates how you should think and feel about the events that transpire within it. The setup, Richard's emotionally-swelling song, the climax, notice how they're presented as far as their cinematography, dialogue and delivery go. They're put together in such a way as to tell you "Hey! This is a sad scene! Be sad about it!" or something along those lines. All-in-all, I cannot for the life of me ever give _The Hero_ a pass. The very few good things it does are only by default, and some of them are undone by the episode's rancid nature. More power to anyone who enjoys something I can't, but I will take this standpoint with me to the grave.

The One & Only C. R. Martin I watched your review and thought it was awesome and excellently put but I felt you missed a few things. Such as Nicole stating that gumball and Darwin don’t seem to appreciate their parents (including her) when they were merely saying this stuff about Richard. Also this stuff the boys said seemed like it was just in passing (like harmless joking) , which anais and Nicole have done as well. It’s also somewhat odd that Richard takes the things gumball and Darwin to heart when MUCH worse has been said and done to him prior.

To be honest, this story could’ve been much better if they changed a few things. Firstly, make Richard be the character we follow the opening scenes of plot around with (I mean like begin with his daily routines which emphasis his failures as a good role mode for his children, then visiting the school) and keep the spirit of the first scene the same so that him overhearing gumball and darwin’s jokes about him has as deep of an affect on him. Secondly centre the story around Richard stepping up as a parent, and becoming a better role model to gumball and Darwin. Thirdly, take out the anais and Nicole scene, I mean it just came off as uncharacteristically malicious and cruel for them to do such awful things to gumball and Darwin. Instead, have the boys come to the realisation that what they said was a quite insensitive, and want to make it up to him. This feeling is emphasised by the hero song, which shows us Richard’s sadness at not being seen as a great figure. Finally, the final act stays the same, since it gets its point across that there has been has been a great development between the father and his sons.

They get jobs, find a good apartment, etc. When Nicole and Anais find out that they try to call them out only to get shot down for essentially abandoning the boys because they weren't grateful for Richard doing nothing. When asked what contributions Richard has ever made, the girls are speechless. Gumball promptly asks them to leave. To twist the knife when Nicole tries to make one last defense, he shuts the door in her face. I'm sure there are a few plot holes to this so feel free to comment.

Loved this episode a lot. It really shows that no matter how in regular live your parents may be disappointing, nonetheless thay actually care about you a lot (not taking into account some really bad families) and have had a very VERY big influence on your live and gave you all the love and care they could as the personalities they are. And how much child view of parent mean to a parent regardless of how much care and real support a parent have to offer to a child. That's especially good shown through a song and emotional elements of the episode. Again - this episode is really much more about showing an emotional side of this bound and I loved it a lot, and I still have tears out of my eyes, when I even just REMEMBER the song. So this one is the episode I really consider one of the best episodes of the entire series, due to its focus on emotional side of view how a parent views and cares about a child they grew and loved for all offspring's years 😭😭

You know. This episode would have been better if Richard still felt bad about the things his sons said, decided to prove himself as a good dad in various ways, only for Gumball and Darwin to tell him that they love him for what he is, and that he should not change for them cause the relationship they share is good as it is. Maybe they could have kept the dangerous scenario they used for the ending, but make it so that Gumball and Darwin planned this together to make Richard "save them". This could have showed that they realy love their dad and that they would do anything to boost his confidence. Oh. And leave Anais and Nicole out of this. They were useless. And the idea of Richard not telling them because he find this embarassing makes him look less like a child and more like a parent with low self esteem. Wich is what this episode should have been about There episode fixed i guess

Yeah, I really hate this episode now. The scene right where Nicole and Anais Angerly yell and abuse Gumball and Darwin in this episode when it rerun aired on Cartoon Network in my summer vacation of 2021, I asked My little brother, Nicholas to please change the channel to Disney+ to watch Luca because I didn’t know how to change it but he was selfishly stalling by playing video games and didn’t bother pausing it just to change it for the whole minutes. So I started arguing with him and that got my mom to get pissed and yell at me for being rude to my brother and forced me to apologize to which I got very mad and argued with my mother. And with that, they didn’t change the channel and just letted the rest of the episode play just to torture me. My mom was just a very strict jerk to me at the time. So no wonder that I easily compared my mother and little sister to Nicole and Anais because my mother got mad and yelled at me at the same time as Nicole getting mad and yelling at Gumball. It was just a very embarrassing moment in my life that I can never get out of my mind. And I don’t wanna hate The Amazing World of Gumball just for episodes where Nicole always gets mad and yells/screams at Gumball because Gumball will always still be my favorite cartoon ever. But it’s just that I don’t know why while I’m watching TV, Making KZbin Videos or Drawing, my family always gets mad and argue with me for random things. It’s just very distracting and makes me want to stop watching TV since my parents are very strict and rather force me to help them with too much shit since I’m the oldest child and a teenager now. My just life sucks nowadays.

If you want to have characters acting like Mean Jerks in a Sad Episode, make them look mature and reasonable, NOT STRICT ASSHOLES(At Least Ben’s Parents’ Actions in The episode “Grounded” from Alien Force is Decent and makes Fair Sense(even though it feels harsh), because If I have someone not telling me for a long time they are doing something dangerous for a reason, I would feel shock and do something that will not make them repeat the same mistake, IDK why people hated that episode because Ben’s Parents are Jerks, I used to hate that episode when I was young, but as I grow up, I finally realize why Ben’s Parents are acting like that and I understood Ben and His Parents in that episode and I felt bad about them, at least it’s a decent and fair(though a little bit harsh) episode)
