All artists need visual reference points, though. Out of the countless things you could be asked to tattoo for someone in a customized way, it's really rare that even a brilliant designer/artist would have an informed and clear mental picture pop right into view without checking certain details for realism (such as how many gills does a shark usually have, etc.)
