Great videos, is there a reading list you can suggest for further study or just books in general that you recommend?

Thanks Jonathan. I recommend reading Hilaire Belloc's biography of James II if you're interested in him. GK Chesterton's Short History of England is a good overview from a more enlightenment-skeptic position. And of course Mencius Modbug's Letter to an Open-Minded Progressive.

There is an audiobook recording of Chesterton's work in the public domain. archive.org/details/short_history_england_rc/shorthistengland_11_gkchesterton.mp3 www.unqualified-reservations.org/2008/04/open-letter-to-open-minded-progressives/ If I may barge into this conversation like a fool: Although 'Jacobitism' was a local and *legitimistic* counter-movement to the _'rebellion of the rich'_ - as Chesterton characterizes the English Revolutions - it's later form of Neo-Jacobitism can be interpreted in a wider context of the so called *'counter-enlightenment'* , often reduced by liberals to 'Jesuitism', giving way to the conspiracy theory _par excellence_ , claiming the world is ruled either by Freemasonry (proposed by Catholic writers) or the 'Society of Jesus' (propagated by advocates of radical enlightenment), ultimately collapsing both parties into one and the same entity via the masonic reform of _'strict observance'_ during the decades, Jesuits were supressed by the Vatican (a shadow of these obscure events within popular culture would be e.g. the _private_ order of 'trinity' in the 'Tomb Raider' video game series...). I'd argue - instead of championing either side of a controversy _prematurely_ - to include reflections on the *history of enlightenment* by prominent _liberals_ like e.g. Isaiah Berlin who was involved in Cold War 'totalitarianism theory'. Since an _ideological_ 'rule of terror' was the hallmark of _Jacobinism_ it is of interest that liberals became uneasy about their own _ideology_ of *popular sovereignty* (propagated by the invention of the same press, they _still_ control, manipulating public opinion) and it's integral 'slope into *demagoguery'* when confronted with the French and Russian revolution. Arguably a matter of 'roots and fruits'. berlin.wolf.ox.ac.uk/published_works/ae/AE2.pdf To review both sides of a dispute in order to form a _nuanced_ answer to a question would be the *Thomistic* approach...

A crucial episode. Curiously, while the *'Whig* *interpretation* *of* *history'* or it's later forms of *'modernization* *theory'* is largely _overcome_ in academic historiography by _critical_ analysis of it's _teleological_ prepositions of 'linear progress' - it's _utopian_ _lures_ _completely_ dominate *public* *discourse* either in form of *liberal* *imperialism* ('open door policy', 'humanitarian intervention', 'regime change') or social-liberal 'progressivism', following e.g. John Dee's suggestions of a 'commonwealth' (e.g. institutionalizing 'social security' for veterans in 'naval hospitals'). (Lucy Worsley on the British 'fib' of the 'Glorious Revolution') kzbin.info/www/bejne/g2qzg4yeiZVsopI www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b08bs0hn *"Delenda* *est* *Carthago* . _In other words : 'Holland is our great rival in trade, on the Ocean and in the New World. Let us destroy her, though she be a Protestant Power, let us destroy her with the help of a Catholic Power'. These were the maxims of the Commonwealth and of the Protector, because, Puritans though they were and though they had risen up against Popery, they understood that in their age the struggle of the Churches was falling into the background, and that the rivalry of the maritime Powers for trade and empire in the New World was taking its place as the question of the day."_ (John R. Seeley. The Expansion of England. 1883. P. 117.) One could argue that the cultural root of Western *parliamentarism* can be found not just in the _heresy_ of _national_ _state_ _churches_ - which hypocritically pointed their fingers towards so called *'Caesaro-papism'* in the 'orthodox' East - but already in the *'conciliarism'* of the 15th century - when the 'Nova Roma' of Constantine finally fell to Islamic invaders, introducing a *secular* *neo-platonism* as a replacement of aristotelian moderation, _christianized_ by Aquinas. If it weren't for individuals like Jeanne - the daily deceiving of the public by *Jacobine* propaganda would have possibly spread the continent generations earlier, setting a world ablaze before it's time. A _critical_ history of the social threads that connect the Jacobine Club, 'The Grand Orient of France' and the so called *Scottish* *Enlightenment* is still to be written (some recent progress has been made on the Bavarian 'Perfectibilists' by the University of Erfurt in regard to the so called 'Swedish Box' of the Duke of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, equally treasured by the GeStaPo and the NKVD for it's membership lists). projekte.uni-erfurt.de/illuminaten/Talk:The_Gotha_Illuminati_Research_Base Thanks Justine, for pointing out the political alliance between James the II. and William Penn - _arguably_ a role model for our fading days of the 'new orthodoxy' (i.e. the _normative_ 'progressive interpretation of history') towards a 'liberty of conscience' and: _pluralist_ _dialogue_ .

Thanks Christoph for these observations and links. Yes the bond between James and William Penn is intriguing. Looks like the efforts at pluralism go back a bit further than one would have thought.

@@JustineBrownsBookshelf Thanks for taking the time to read and reply to it. _"Looks like the efforts at pluralism go back a bit further than one would have thought."_ Christ never shied away from people with _good_ _will_ whether within the Sanhedrin Council, the publicans, the legions, prostitutes or among the Samaritans.
