The Godfather asks Hagen if it's true about the producer and the young girl, and Hagen responds it is. Vito then says "an Infamia", which means "an abomination" or "a disgrace." In the book I believe that the producer's predilection for underage girls was sort of a justification, even a reason, for the Godfather's doing what he does to his horse. In the version of the movie shown in theaters, that aspect is not even touched upon. I guess Coppola didn't want the audience to think there needed to be a moral reason why this producer deserved to be taught a lesson (it would have made it easier for the audience to hate Woltz and condone Vito's actions), and, after all, the ultimate objective was that of getting Johnnie the role. But Woltz was despicable.

No he didn't. The girl Woltz is referring to when he says "the finest piece of ass I've ever had" is an actress who ran off with Johnny, and she's not seen in the film. When Hagen first arrives at the studio Woltz is signing some papers, and he's given a pony as a gift to a young girl . That's the young girl the Don is referring to. And she is obviously underage.

From the book: "Does this man have real balls?" Hagen considered exactly what the Don meant by this question. Over the years he had learned that the Don's values were so different from those of most people that his words also could have a different meaning. Did Woltz have character? Did he have a strong will? He most certainly did, but that was not what the Don was asking. Did the movie producer have the courage not to be bluffed? Did he have the willingness to suffer heavy financial loss delay on his movies would mean, the scandal of his big star exposed as a user of heroin? Again the answer was yes. But again this was not what the Don meant. Finally Hagen translated the question properly in his mind. Did Jack Woltz have the balls to risk everything, to run the chance of losing all on a matter of principle, on a matter of honor; for revenge? Hagen smiled. He did it rarely but now he could not resist jesting with the Don. "You're asking if he is a Sicilian." The Don nodded his head pleasantly, acknowledging the flattering witticism and its truth. "No," Hagen said.

If they left that scene in, people would have been asking why he wasn't killed outright all things considered....
@Thoralmir6 жыл бұрын
Vito offering compensation first is pretty much his M.O. He strongly believes in the power of goodwill to produce long-term positive benefits for his business. He prefers to make the people he deals with think they're owning their own actions by serving his wishes, and he does this by appealing to their personal honor and sense of gratitude. He's not an egomaniac who derives gratification by lording the power he has over others, doesn't make you grovel on your knees to beg for his help; that's the fastest way to find a knife in your back. No, the way Vito runs the show, he has clients practically jumping at the chance to repay him for his "kindness", like that immigrant baker Enzo. He carefully crafts an image of a compassionate man who will personally inconvenience himself to help out a friend in need. He makes it so that you value having him respect you; most fear losing *his respect* by letting him down, rather than any violence he could inflict upon them. If the Don is in trouble, you end up feeling like you should go out of your way to offer help.

That’s kind of unfortunately what the thinking process was back then almost a century ago and it’s not surprising even if modern audiences are disgusted with the fact an abusive pos can hurt his spouse basically right in front of her parents and siblings and get away with it. Doesn’t make it right but that was just the social conventions back then, with Vito not interfering and Carmella blaming her for being difficult even when it’s Carlo’s issue. I think it highlights the difference between the Americanized children and their immigrant parents, on top of Sonny just loving his family and won’t stand for anyone disrespecting and hurting them.

Yeah, it sounds really strange when he says "is this Woltz so tough?".

@@Vingul in the book, this is echoed later. Vito asks Tom if Sollazzo has balls, and Tom says yes.

@@studogable I was referring to the Don's voice, not the line itself, but that's an interesting observation.

The scene of Woltz screaming at Tom at the dinner table while Tom calmly sat there eating was brilliant.

I don't know why Coppola didn't leave this scene in? It's a good scene.

In film school they tell you that you gotta be prepared to cut your favorite scene

tigertank06 it’s deleted cause it make no sense. Connie and Carlo got married 2 days before. Remember Tom flew to see Waltz the night of their wedding after Johnny showed up to see the godfather

@@joelkeane3160 That's a good point. I also don't think it's a great scene and it's right that it was left out.

The studio was always threatening him to shorten the film. Coppola was always under the threat of being fired.

IMO, too much exposition, plus they'd already established Sonny as a hot head.

A lot of these scenes were included in the TV special. I seem to recall this one.

"Then why? Why are you asking me to go to Coppala and delete those scenes Mike ?!" "I was very happy that this film didn't end up in the hands of George Lucas. I know him and Francis are friends, but that THX11......whatever the hell that was. And as for Star Wars...who knew right? I learned a lot of lessons from Francis but the most important one was this....Always show great scenes. Just don't show ALL your great scenes. At least not until you release some duds like Cotton Club and Rumble Fish and you now need a buck from special editions."

0:58 Vito Corleone has a very interesting definition of ‘reasoning’. 0:21 ‘You never interfere with a man and a woman.’ Great line.

There's no reason to take this scene out. It added depth to the character of Luca Brasi and the mama, and it added the "fuggedabout it" that later became a staple in mafia movies. It didn't add any notable length to the film.

Jack Kitchen dude, connie and Carlo got married two days before. This scene makes no sense.

It makes sense if you understand that Carlo found out, after he married into the Corleone family, that he was never going to be allowed to be a power broker in the family - so he took out his frustrations on Connie.

Jack Kitchen It makes The Godfather look weak .... In my mind Carlo would never disrespect the Corleone family as to have such a loud fight with Connie with Vito right down stairs

Stephanie Crane so he took 2 days, following the wedding, to start arguing and threatening in front of sonny and the don? I don’t think so. The don told Tom to fly out the night of the wedding, Tom arrived and on the same day had Mr Waltz’s car “take him to the airport” to return to NY....what about the honey moon for Christ sake? No no no, this scene has no, what the critics call ‘verisimilitude’; in other words it is inconsistent with the rules of the world that the film devises.
@stephcrane6 жыл бұрын
They were likely arguing previously, but until Carlo married into the family, that arguing took place outside the compound. Now that Carlo is stuck in the compound (until an apartment can be arranged) - and realizes that he will never have true power - the arguing is happening all the time, even in front of the Don (who won't interfere), and will soon progress to physical abuse. As far as the honeymoon - it could be that they're waiting to take it (e.g., waiting on an ocean liner), or perhaps they're not planning to take one...not all couples take honeymoon trips, even in this age of jet travel and trillion-dollar tourist industries.

And, if you read his lips, Brando says this as well - it was dubbed over for basic-cable broadcast.
