This is a deleted scene from The Godfather sourced from the 2012 AMC HD broadcast of The Godfather: A Novel for Television. This scene takes place between another deleted scene with Tom after dinner with Woltz and the horse head scene. In this scene, Connie and Carlo argue while Vito, Sonny, and Tom discuss Woltz.
Note: When Vito says "Is this Woltz so tough?", it's a dubbed line for the TV edit. The uncensored scene says "Does this Woltz have balls?" as you can see his lips say, but this audio is not known to exist because this scene was only for TV and not included anywhere else.

Carlo was scared about it but then found out that Vito wouldn’t help her. So he kept doing it. He was mad that they wouldn’t allow him in on the family business. @reindeerkid Tom is probably the most interesting character in the movies. He adopted a culture and lifestyle he wasn’t born into, his family that loved him and was raised as a son even tho Vito didn’t haven’t owe him anything, and in Tom’s mind he wanted to serve his father properly so he became lawyer (I only look at the movie canon not the book) and dedicated his life to the Corleone Family. And in his service, he mourned his brother Sonny’s death so much that he couldn’t serve the news to Vito as Conciliatory, but as a heartbroken son.

The Godfather asks Hagen if it's true about the producer and the young girl, and Hagen responds it is. Vito then says "an Infamia", which means "an abomination" or "a disgrace." In the book I believe that the producer's predilection for underage girls was sort of a justification, even a reason, for the Godfather's doing what he does to his horse. In the version of the movie shown in theaters, that aspect is not even touched upon. I guess Coppola didn't want the audience to think there needed to be a moral reason why this producer deserved to be taught a lesson (it would have made it easier for the audience to hate Woltz and condone Vito's actions), and, after all, the ultimate objective was that of getting Johnnie the role. But Woltz was despicable.

No he didn't. The girl Woltz is referring to when he says "the finest piece of ass I've ever had" is an actress who ran off with Johnny, and she's not seen in the film. The young girl in question is someone Hagen noticed in Woltz's house when he was eating there. When Hagen first arrives at the studio Woltz is signing some papers, and he's given a pony as a gift to a young girl . That's the young girl the Don is referring to. And she is obviously underage.

From the book: "Does this man have real balls?" Hagen considered exactly what the Don meant by this question. Over the years he had learned that the Don's values were so different from those of most people that his words also could have a different meaning. Did Woltz have character? Did he have a strong will? He most certainly did, but that was not what the Don was asking. Did the movie producer have the courage not to be bluffed? Did he have the willingness to suffer heavy financial loss delay on his movies would mean, the scandal of his big star exposed as a user of heroin? Again the answer was yes. But again this was not what the Don meant. Finally Hagen translated the question properly in his mind. Did Jack Woltz have the balls to risk everything, to run the chance of losing all on a matter of principle, on a matter of honor; for revenge? Hagen smiled. He did it rarely but now he could not resist jesting with the Don. "You're asking if he is a Sicilian." The Don nodded his head pleasantly, acknowledging the flattering witticism and its truth. "No," Hagen said.

Pity they deleted that scene from the movie, but in all honesty it would have upset many an italian family. That stunt Carlo pulled NEVER would've gotten ignored. Sonny's behavior is EXACTLY how it would've went down. If anything, Carlo would've been thrown out of the house, and Connie wouldn't have been allowed to see him until he learned how to conduct himself in a "decent manner". He also would be watched by the men in the family, going forward.

I love it. Sonny sitting in on Tom Hagen and Vito’s meeting because he’s still expected to be The next Godfather. Already at this point you can see he’s not “Godfather,” material though. He’s not interested in the tactical gamesmanship and subtle manoeuvring which is so vital to being a great Godfather which both Vito and Michael executed so expertly. I’ll always be curious about how good Andy Garcia’s character in Godfather III would be with executing the family business.

Carlo's treatment of Connie would have been seen as disrespect to the Corleone family and nipped in the bud, early on.

I don't think so. See, this movie represents a time and a culture with strong traditional roles for men and women. When a married couple is arguing, it was the woman's job to shut up and not argue. That's why Don Vito Corleone didn't care when he heard that Carlo hit his daughter, because once your daughter is married, she is not yours anymore, she belongs to her husband.

Doesn’t make it right but it reflects how old-school and conservative both Vito and Carmella were, especially since they’d of been from the old country. That’s kind of unfortunately what the thinking process was back then almost a century ago and it’s not surprising even if modern audiences are disgusted with the fact an abusive pos can hurt his spouse basically right in front of her parents and siblings and get away with it. Doesn’t make it right but that was just the social conventions back then, with Vito not interfering and Carmella blaming her for being difficult even when it’s Carlo’s issue. I think it highlights the difference between the Americanized children and their immigrant parents, on top of Sonny just loving his family and won’t stand for anyone disrespecting and hurting them.

From that meeting where the Don turns down the offer, but Sonny shows excitement; the Don gets shot, Michael gets punched out and then retaliates, Sonny gets killed, Fredo gets sent out to Las Vegas, Michael's Sicilian wife gets blown up etc. All because Sonny opens his mouth and speaks when he shouldn't have.

And, flip side, Carlo being a Northern Italian, probably thought the Corleone family were borderline cavemen, without the slightest intelligence or culture.

Woltz got off easy, considering what this scene revealed. I think they left it out to make the point that Vito Corleone doesn't take kindly to a refusal, especially since he tried to compensate him instead of just intimidating him first! If they left that scene in, people would have been asking why he wasn't killed outright all things considered....
@Thoralmir

Vito offering compensation first is pretty much his M.O. He strongly believes in the power of goodwill to produce long-term positive benefits for his business. He prefers to make the people he deals with think they're owning their own actions by serving his wishes, and he does this by appealing to their personal honor and sense of gratitude. He's not an egomaniac who derives gratification by lording the power he has over others, doesn't make you grovel on your knees to beg for his help; that's the fastest way to find a knife in your back. No, the way Vito runs the show, he has clients practically jumping at the chance to repay him for his "kindness", like that immigrant baker Enzo. He carefully crafts an image of a compassionate man who will personally inconvenience himself to help out a friend in need. He makes it so that you value having him respect you; most fear losing *his respect* by letting him down, rather than any violence he could inflict upon them. If the Don is in trouble, you end up feeling like you should go out of your way to offer help.

The goal was getting Frankie Fontaine the role. Remember they were going to start shooting the film in 2weeks. So killing woltz would have killed Frankie's chances, especially with a new director on board; also a director who has no dirt on him like sleeping with young girls.

@@Thoralmir Well said!... In a sense Vito plays the 'long con'... He sees the bigger picture, totally leaves emotion and ambiguity out of it and crafts his own narrative on how things will play out.The people who like you say throw themselves into his orbit to ingratiate him do so without ever really grasping that he's the one who is in fact 'setting things in motion' for them to even get the concept on why they are actually doing it in the first place. He's a businessman who is supremely masterful at psychology.

This is the first time I've seen this scene! I wish they had left this in as well as the scene where Tom sees the younger girl!! We knew from the books that Luca Brasi did the deed but the movie made it seem like it was Tom. lol. He was the only one in California! This at least gives us a set up and at least lets us know what a scumbag Woltz was and that the Don did this for 'moral reasons'. So many deleted scenes that should have stayed in this movie.

When the Godfather was shown on network TV some years ago, the scene where Tom sees the young girl was included. The movie was shown over several nights with deleted scenes included.Only time I ever saw it that way.

Must have been the AMC Saga in March of 2012. (Is it just me or do you think of 2012 as two years ago and yet the 1990s as 10 years ago?..... and I'm 14.....)

It had to be either NBC, CBS or ABC because it was before I ever had cable TV. I remember they had viewer warnings about violence after each commercial break. I also remember in Part 2, when DeNiro shoots the old mobster in the hallway to his apartment, as the old man slumps against his apartment door, DeNiro sticks the gun in his mouth, fires and the back of the guys head blows off. I never saw that again in any of the Godfather movies shown on TV. It was always deleted.

Because of this scene, I've only just worked out that the post-Hollywood discussion that they have about Solozzo took place in the Don's own living room; for some reason, I always just assumed that this was a room at the Olive Oil Company.

I think I know why you thought it was a room at Genco's... it looks weird! For a rich family like the Corleones, this living-room is too... empty! Just a little sofa, a couple of chairs and the fire? So odd! Haha!

In my family and in my culture in general we were taught the same about not interfering in another's marriage/relationship. But I believe there is a line to be drawn, an act of violence on your sister is not a forgivable act. It's an atrocity that one must pay for.

Well not just that, there is the aspect of disrespecting another persons house much less a Don. You don't pull crap like that while under another persons roof, ever. In real life a person like Carlo would have been killed that very day for such an insult. Luca would have shown up 20 minutes later, driving Carlo to the bakery to get some cannoli, and returning with only the cannoli...Luca would have left the gun.

I can see why the Connie/Carlo part was deleted at this point. It was covered nicely later. But it would have been great for the theater version to include Don Vito’s disgust over Woltz’s pedophilia.
