Everyone at the table is laughing at Pentangeli's remarks. Everyone except Michael. A bit of foreshadowing about how Michael had become alienated from his father's world and culture, and had become something more cold-blooded. At least it would've been if the scene was kept in the movie.

@@baxakk7374 Consider how Vito mocked Johnny Fontane when Johnny was crying to him about his issues with Woltz. And (as spelled out in the book) Vito was pleased that Johnny took his mockery in stride. He could empathize with people in a way that Michael struggled to. One of the Godfather II's great unanswered questions is whether Pantangeli would've been so quick to assume Don Vito sold him out to the Rosato brothers in similar circumstances. I doubt that he would have.

As much as I loved Clemenza I’m glad we got Pentangeli in this film. The character, who really doesn’t have all that much screen time and doesn’t appear in the first film, is played perfectly and manages to portray a relationship and history with the Corleone family that feels just as tight as the one Clemenza had. I know a lot of people would’ve preferred Clemenza in this film, as the “betrayal” later on would feel much more raw. After all, Clemenza knew Michael since he was a baby and was one of the originators of the Corleone family. As gut-wrenching as it would’ve been witnessing Clemenza testifying against Michael, I think it’s just as strong with Pentangeli. I think that’s a testament to how well the character’s history with Michael was established, even in such a short time frame. Pentangeli feels like one of the old time capos. He would’ve fit perfectly in the first film.

Frankie wasn't a rat, the only reason he considered flipping on Mike is because he thought Mike set him up to be killed. His brother being there was in no way a threat, it was a way of conveying to him the truth, that it was Roth who set him up and framed Mike for it. That was all conveyed by the one look between them when Frankie saw him in court sitting with Tom and Mike.
@mikedeck8381
@mikedeck8381 2 жыл бұрын
It's not that simple. There are some old school mobster who give Sammy the Bull a pass for flipping on Gotti. Gotti was caught on tape talking about murders that Sammy did. It went against the rules for Gotti to even mention this even in private and in their minds it freed him from his obligations. In this instance the Rossato brothers attempted to kill Frankie. They stated that they were doing this on Mike's orders. Frankie had acted on good faith based on Mike orders and it was made to look like Mike double crossed him or blamed him for the hit attempt in Tahoe which Frank had nothing to do with. Of course the whole thing with the police man breaking it up by accident, it was all staged. Him and Cicci are taken into protective custody but it's stated that at this point the Feds had enough on Frankie and Cici to put them both in jail forever. Of course they cut a deal, they have no choice but in thier minds Mike had betrayed them all ready and reneged on his obligations to them, which let them off the hook in terms of omerta.

Heres a suggestion for Francis Ford Coppola. Combine the three movies to create a start to finish Godfather Sage and include all the deleted scenes. Start with the young Vito in his home town and finish up with Michael passing away in his garden. Most likely we are looking at a seven to nine hour presentation but it would be amazing. @@mjcc9422 Idk about the other 4 Families, but I think it was implied they were. But the “Sicilian” stuff is really elaborated on more in the book. When it talks about Tom Hagen replacing Genco as consigliere, it’s mentioned that it’s perceived as a bad move because Tom is not Sicilian and only a Sicilian would have the cunning and strategic foresight to properly serve his Don. Vito Corleone shares a lot of these ideals. He believes Sicilian are smarter and more cunning than non-Sicilians. He dislikes Carlo, among other reasons, because he’s half Sicilian and half mainland Italian. But…it might’ve been done to show the backwards thinking that many of the real life “Old Mustache Petes” like Masseria and Maranzano had in their view of La Cosa Nostra and doing business. Vito Corleone is referred by others in the book multiple times as an “Old Mustache Pete.”

Well Pantegelli here is speaking Italian... albeit with a heavy (Americanized) Sicilian accent. Also if you read the books you'd know that wasn't the case either. The book refers to an incident Vito had with a young Al Capone. Vito was having an issue with another gangster, and Cappne tried to intervene on that other man's behalf. Vito asked him "What's a Neopolitan getting involved in the business of two Sicilians?" Even in GF II, young Vito is told by the Landlord that he's "Calabrese", not Sicilian. Also in the first one, Carlo calls Connie a "guinea" brat. Never made sense to me until I read the book. He's a Northern Italian (Veneto I believe they mention it... been about 16 years since I read it so could very well be wrong), and they've historically looked down on anywhere below Tuscany, with particular disdain for Sicilians. The Sopranos, over the course of the series, also touches on the regional differences between Italians.

From the little I still understand, essentially Frankie is making fun of them for raising their son to be 100% American and not even a little bit Sicilian. So the boy doesn't speak the language or have the same values. He also comments that the party isn't for their kind of people (Sicilians/Italians), and that it's only for WASPS.
