That one comment Michael made to Sonny showed you the difference between the two Dons and why Michel was the smarter out of the two brothers. ‘That’s not how Pop would play it.’ Sonny was all action and he was a vicious Don that could take on the other four families single handedly but never had an end game. Michael did. He was more strategic much like Don Corleone maybe even more so.

Interesting to watch, but yeah, it's very unnecessary when considering the main plotlines of GF2. Coppola was right to cut it.

I always liked the quick cut to Sonny's widow when Michael said he died. I always wondered if she resented him for his affair which later resulted in his bastard child Vincent.

Bonasera was the "outsider" looking in. He didn't fully comprehend Vito Corleone's intelligence and wisdom when he asked his favor all those years ago, and he still didn't understand when Tom Hagen called him. Bonasera was frightened and confused: preparing for the worst, assuming the worst, thinking the worst... only to find that this most powerful and respected of Godfathers, broken, and grieving for his dead son... thinking about what his beloved wife will think. The look on Bonasera's face with the Godfather at parlor, in the moment of denouement, was profound shame. Only in that moment, did he finally understand that Don Vito would never have asked anything of him he wasn't fitted to do.

“If I argue against the Supreme Court, I would never do as good as I did tonight” what an emotional thing that Tom says. In the book it goes into detail how Sollozzo was going to kill him right there to send a message since he was told at the time he was talking to Tom that the Don was still alive. Tom literally persuaded Sollozzo to let him go. Knowing that, his emotion at the end hits different.

In a deleted moment from the first film. Vito, referring to Neri, tells Michael he found his Lucca Brasi. The difference is that while Neri is ruthless he is also very intelligent while Brasi was just a goon.

In his own way Sonny caused Michael's future plans. If he had just kept his mouth shut with the Sollozzo Meeting, this wouldn't have happened. Also Tom was responsible as well, he approved and arranged the meeting. Even Tom knew that The Don was beginning to slip, Tom was so greedy like Sonny but kept it on a lower level.

Tom wasnt asked because he wasn't a Sicilian. Also although Tom felt like a "Son", there were times where he knew he was tolerated but not fully accepted in cases lke these.

Also don't you notice that Michael also spoke to his Mother in Italian. It's so impressive she was bilingual. Sonny not sitting in his Father's chair was a sign of respect, he wasn't the head of The Family. In corporate structure he was Vice President and his Father was President.
