I think you should gather a bunch of those historical weapons and other things you made, sterilize them with alcohol (preferably cheap brandy) and otherwise clean them up then get a full pig rib cage with all the meat still on it to test them on. You can get a good idea of how much damage they could do to flesh. After you are done you can have a Texan style luau with it or something similar where you have a pitmaster there to give tips and such for how to do that. It would also give you an excuse to give weapons to all your guests though I feel like the pig poking would happen one day and the luau would be the day after giving you a good 18 hours to roast it right. If you wanted to go really far you might be able to rig the pig back up to gush BBQ sauce out if the wound gets too deep/bad. you could even invite a batch of youtubers there for it!

Takes my back to my childhood days, when me and a friend were connoisseurs of 'pointy stick kill weapons' having enjoyed reading a book on medieval weapons and proceeded to make a set of them in craft classes only to have the pointy bits un-pointy'd by the scoundrel known as Mr Groves! Damn you, Mr Groves!!
@F15ElectricEagle2 жыл бұрын
Can relate. It appears there's a Mr. Grove in the woodshop class of every school. It seems every student was working on two projects during class. The regular assigned project (such as a birdhouse, wood frame wall mirror, etc.) when the teacher was looking, and a personal medieval black project (i.e. swords, battle axes, mace and shields) when the teacher wasn't looking. The teacher new about this and we new he new. There was an unspoken rule that he'll look the other way as long as we didn't overdue it, such as attaching a metal ball with bolts screwed into it as in the case with my morning star.

Known from the battle of the Golden Spurs in Flanders Courtrai in 1302. While the enemy came charging on horseback, the Flemings knelt down in front of the horse. They planted their goedendag diagonally in the ground and pointed the point of the weapon at the chest of the onrushing horse. The animal crushed itself on the steel pin that penetrated deep into the chest, succumbed to the injury and succumbed to its knees. This made it appear as if the horse was kneeling and saying "good day."
@InvictusByz3 жыл бұрын
A neat story, that some historians have supported, but highly unlikely and not widely supported these days. A goedendag is supposed to be 3-5 feet long, you can't brace that to aim for a horse's chest and not get crushed by the horse when it comes down. A person's not strong enough to just *stop* it, the weapon braced into the ground would at best deflect the animal. With a larger spear you've got enough separation that it will usually not impact the wielder, but proper spears for use against cavalry were easily twice that size.

It is actually called a "goedendag" because you would stab where the chin would be just under the helmet. This action would tilt the victims head back after which you would pull it out which would make the head fall back down. This would result in a knodding motion which is a non verbal way to say hello in our parts of Europe. I live in Belgium we learned about this in Middle school those were some fun days.

Little addition: Lots of Goedendags we see had kind of a flared base after the stick, like a round plate the size of a hand or so. That would definitely stop a horse from sliding down your spear. As long as the handle held and you had it braced, you should definitely be able to stop a rider with it

The late 13th to 14th centuries were definitely times of change and experimentation in medieval armor. However French knights at the Battle of Golden Spurs in 1302 would have mostly been armored as follows: padded gambeson, padded cap, a long chainmail hauberk covering the neck to the hands and knees, chainmail chausses covering the legs, a chainmail coif covering the head and upper torso, square iron/steel plates mounted to the shoulders called ailettes, a helmet (likely a great helm), and of course their knightly golden spurs. Those french knights might have also started to incorporate plate armor protection on their lower legs to deflect blows from infantry. On the other side, the flemish militiamen were usually armored according to their guild's regulations or their standing in society. From art of the time, they typically had (at the very least): An open-faced/kettle helmet, a covering of padded fabric or mail for their necks, and iron or mail gauntlets to protect their hands from, well, hand strikes. While we don't see brigandine armor emerge until the late-14th century, coats of plates were ,as you thought, fairly common. However, I have not seen art or sources depicting this type of armor being used during the Franco-Flemish War of the early 14th century. I believe coats of plates were most common in German territories of this time. Source: The Battle of the Golden Spurs by Verbruggen

@beedlethebeard27663 жыл бұрын
@@chetmcgovern9985 The "hard G" would actually be the last g in "dag", but since they mentioned it was used in a Flemish war, it's more likely that the pronounciation started with a "soft G" for both the first "g" and the last "g". Which is much more common in the South of the Netherlands (and the area that is now Flanders in Belgium). It is tricky to explain without an auditory example, but it's like an exhalation of breath in which you close the back of the throat a bit more to create the "g" sound. Off the top of my head there isn't a proper similar pronounciation in English.
