All this while, the tip is very simple. Keep my back to the target. What a lifesaver. Been over the top for months and this fixed it. Thanks!

Sitting on a bench at the clubhouse While waiting for a thunderstorm to pass I watched this video. I've been fighting over the top swing. The storm passed and I went back to hole 8 and gave this a try. Turning my back more and keeping my right elbow tucked in made a heck of a difference. My contact was better and I was accelerating through the ball and I was getting more distance. That lighting storm was a blessing. Never thought I'd be writing in to say a video helped but this lesson did.

Dear Michael, I just wanted to thank you for your brilliant video. The words ‘ keep your back to the target as long as possible’ have completely cured my over the top swing motion, forcing me to come inside and connect with the ball so sweetly I am hitting my 8 iron around 155/160 yds. I applied the technique my rescue and driver and it works! The connection, power and impact is so pure, I couldn’t quite believe it. Most shots were straight with a nice draw to them, those that didn’t go straight still flew a long way due to the connection. Your free gratis advice is much appreciated. If I ever make it over to the States, the beers are on me. Cheers. Vince from Harrogate, England

That first swing thought is reallllly helpful and often overlooked. Driving your hips to clear the way for your hands is great to create lag and follow through, but if you start them too early it pushes those hands and promotes that casting motion.

"Back to target": see also Haney, Toski, Flick, Love Jr., Vivien Saunders, et al. Same for the other advice as well. It's largely a matter of training yourself not to dominate the swing with the shoulders, especially on the downswing. One you make the initial "over" move of even a few inches with the shoulders, starting the downswing from the shoulders down, the path the club takes to the ball, if it's going to hit the ball at all, is impossibly steep. You can't hit the back of the ball forward from there. Also, the approach is not only from steeply downward but also from the outside. Even coming slightly across the ball from the outside tends to move contact away from the sweet spot and toward the toe. The combination of force dissipating into the ground instead of the back of the ball and near-certain bad contact on the face is just devastating. It's the #1 flaw of nearly all handicappers and occasionally plagues even pros. The well-known "magic move" advocated by Harvey Penick also addresses the problem. In case you're not familiar with it, he used to tell players to practice in very slow motion starting the downswing with a bump of your weight to the left (for a RH player) and, at the same time, bringing the right elbow, turned in and under (inside of elbow facing upward and outward, facing the right downswing plane), back close to the side without doing anything at all with hands and without turning the shoulders and upper body toward the target at all in that initial move. The feeling you're looking for here, and with any of these drills or aids, is that your shoulders are enabling the movement of arms-hands-club, but not pushing and shoving the arms-hands-club around. Shoulder movement makes the right path and plane possible, but especially for male players, there's so much strength in the shoulders it feels like you should be applying it directly and forcefully to the swinging motion. But dominating the swing with the shoulders as a primary mover of the club is just death.

First summer in 50 years golfing that I've struggled with this, and when I mimic this motion holding the driver like he says with my left hand I can tell my lower body has been doing the exact opposite of what I should be doing. I can feel totally different muscles working so I'm hoping I can correct this now that I understand the feeling. He explains this better than most.

Hadn't been able to hit my driver worth a damn for years, so was just getting by w/ my 3 wood..... after an hour on the range with that noodle I started crushing my driver. Even works with your irons. You will find in order to not hit the noodle, you have to maintain your tush line and not early extend. So the noodle can also help monitor that swing flaw as well. I hit my irons so nice (comparatively, of course) but my Driver is so over the top. Im hitting straight 7 irons 160 yards, smooth effortless swing. My drives are hooked 20 yards out with no airtime at all. I would score better with a 9 iron and a putter.

It’s comical stumbling onto this as a player who just goes out and plays. So much is mental, if something isn’t right in my game then I just practice it (always practicing) then move on. As a Professional golf caddie, at a resort, in the Monterey area, one of best things I try to do, is calm a player down… it’s hole 7, it’s a par 3, yes just hit it 85 yards is tough… no, we don’t want a driver on 8, it’s a 190-235 layup depending on tee placement. Just have fun, don’t take it so seriously even if you are serious. Some of the best rounds I’ve seen are people just flowing, no expectations

Michael Breed needs to cut down on the caffeine. But, this is a very good video nonetheless. My coming over the top was caused by rotating my shoulders too soon on the downswing. I would shift my weight, turn my shoulders, and then start my downswing. Bad, very bad. The part where he said to keep my back to the target as long as possible, I believe, will fix my swing. Can't wait to try it.

Please help. My right hand always turns the club face over. No matter how inside I swing the club, by right hand turns over and the ball goes left. I believe it comes from "the feeling" I'm trying to achieve at impact. Help. kg
@ShaunWebbGolf8 жыл бұрын
Kg, many times this is caused by an incorrect "concept" of squaring the clubface. Instead of rolling the wrists over, feel like you twist the grip on the downswing so that the left wrist (for righthander) bows slightly. This will sqaure the face and you will no longer need to roll the wrists which usually points the clubface too far left and causes the path to veer to the left of the target line. Hope this helps :)

Another method is to swing more like Fred Couples; he takes the club away more outside and up and then it drops back down to the inside naturally, since golf is a game of opposites. Those who take it away inside have more of a tendency to come over the top.

Nope, still need the big weight shift to the left with the lower body but the feeling is the torso will not come along with the arms. I'm almost feeling like my left shoulder never moves toward the target. It will obviously clear eventually, but it's best to wait as long as you can.

That back to the target drop it inside is bad advice because majority of golfers will get stuck to the inside and will not have time to square the face and rotate to the left resulting in a push or flip. For myself I like being on top of the plane swinging on line to the left as I exit which gives me a nice fade or straight shot. I like to be on top of the plane but not like a hacker! It works for me but you need to find out for yourself.

I believe that golf instruction is primarily for bad golfers. For good golfers (people who can control ball flight, know exactly what they need to do to achieve this) mostly it is talent combined with lots of hard work, and they don't need all this 'coming over the top' garbage, but in my opinion, neither do the bad golfers. I think for most amateur golfer they need to focus on IMPACT. From there, the rest of the swing will need to compensate to get there. People focus on everything else thinking that it will lead to a positive impact situation, but I believe this is contrary to success. Just look at the variation in professional golfers swings, what matters is they control impact to influence the ball how they want. They would all have relatively the same swing if half of popular golf instruction was correct.
