Well Del Torro did mention that Johnny was lucky because he had Thompson, but Benicio didn't have that same luxury, he couldn't hang out with Acosta, and observe him as close, and personal as Depp was able to observe Hunter. I believe he had the look down as well as he could get, at least he had the courage to gain the weight for that role. I don't think he came off as a bumbling idiot, I think you're only dwelling on the scenes where he was totally whacked off of hallucinogens.

As an additional, the look on Benicio's face when he looks over at HST is pure gold; a magnificent job of being in the character of a drug-addled deranged lunatic. KZbin had a different landscape 9 years ago. 🤣 Like I said, Depp had the benefit of really getting to know Hunter. Benicio had to rely on research.
