$ 500.00 for a knife that is not heat treated to it's best potential (63-64) for MagnaCut? Why offer it in MagnaCut if not using it for one of it's best traits ? No thanks Hinderer. Thanks Jared. Nice to see and talk to you and the wife in Ft. Worth.

Larrin seems to think even hrc down to 60 will make the steel perform perfectly fine and people shouldn’t look at that number and think anything is wrong with it. As long as the heat treat they choose is done correctly, it’ll perform just fine at 60 hrc.

Yeah I don't understand why they are treating the Magnacut so low, I'm glad I missed the one I wanted now. Acta Non Verba (ANV) A100 got their Magnacut at 64HRC, and Hogue raised their Deka to 63-64HRC. I don't get why Rick always loves his steel that soft, and he uses M390/20CV that's WAY too soft. If he doesn't want to go above 60-61HRC, he should just switch to S30V, S35VN S45VN Elmax LC200N & Vanax.

60-61 is too soft to take advantage of magnacut. Is hinderer one of the companies that outsources grinding, and has a limit of 62 HRC. I heard some companies outsource but can’t remember the source, transparent maybe? And that flipper tab, is Rick Hinderer deaf?

Most people (if not all) on KZbin never actually use their Hinderer knives. .. which is a a total bonus for Rick Hinderer, because nobody is gonna dispute edge retention or heat treatment. He just loves that people keep his blades in a pelican case & walk around flipping them around the house.

I got an XM18 skinny slicer in magnacut at the show. I really struggled with the decision due to hinderer’s recent actions against transparent knives and the low hrc…but I’ve always wanted one and handling it felt amazing, so I pulled the trigger. Put in pb washers and it is the smoothest washer knife I’ve ever handled. Hopefully the skinny slicer grind will help with edge retention on the softer heat treat… Also it was great to meet you and Kara. Keep doing what you’re doing! Love the content

If you want a knife with MagnaCut steel and a smooth washer action, check out a Les George VECP. He heat treats the MagnaCut to 63 HRC. Not easy to find, especially the newer MagnaCut ones, but definitely worth it 👍. If I’m spending $500+, knife makers like Les George, McNees, & Demko are getting my $$ before Hinderer. I hate to put any manufacturer down but, I feel like Hinderer doesn’t care/try like they used to.

As someone who’s not the biggest fan of Hinderer knives, I’m being completely unbiased. I actually disagree on what was said about MagnaCut’s heat treatment in this video. Larrin Thomas has shown charts of MagnaCut’s optimal HRC range to be 60-65. Numbers can very depending on the type of HT, meaning some have gotten MagnaCut over 65 HRC and it’s also usable a little under 60 HRC. That said, for folding knives that need to be “slicey”, he recommends no less than 62 HRC, all the way up to 65 HRC. For knives that need to take advantage of MagnaCut’s higher range toughness, 60-61 HRC is recommended. What many people mix up (& some refuse to believe) is when Larrin Thomas stated that MagnaCut at 64 HRC is actually tougher than steels like Vanax, S35VN, and Elmax at 61 HRC or LOWER. What I found even more astonishing, is MagnaCut at 64 HRC has double the strength/toughness of steels like M390, 20CV, S90V, S45VN, and others….at 61 HRC. Which is mighty impressive.

The recommended heat treat from the designer will give you 61-62.5 hrc. The data sheet for magnacut from crucible says the aim is 60-63 hrc. So this is a little low, but not so much that its trash. You mostly just lose out on the crazy edge retention at higher hrc. Meh. The reason I want this steel is for its corrosion resistance, while also having competitive edge resistance and toughness.

@@NeevesKnives Larrin says that’s not necessarily true. As long as the heat treatment is done correctly there’s nothing wrong with hrc down to 60. He compares it to the megapixel wars with cameras. More pixels doesn’t mean better pictures necessarily. If there is any edge retention loss, how many cuts are we talking about at 1 or 2 hrc? Seems like something that gets in peoples heads and works as kind of a reverse placebo effect.
@anthonyberardi8904

@@81ghalenot many cuts! The reason Hinderers don’t cut well is because of the factory sharpening angle. It’s like 30° per side. If you drop it down to 20° (or lower), the edge retention goes up significantly.

My brothers in law are hard working farmers over here in Spain and in my job there are quite a few maintenance men working. None of them carry a knife which costs more than 30 euros. These are hard use people and an Opinel is just fine. I once broke down the cardboard packaging for a sofa with the SAK classic on my keychain; not optimal but it can be done The idea that an overbuilt knife is in any way necessary is a myth put out there by macho men and knife companies. People buy Hinderers because they like them and because they have 500 spuds to spend on one. I'm carrying a Kizer d'Orme which I got at half price sale at Mojave. Would I swap it for your Hinderer? Of course! Do I need a Hinderer? Of course not. Would I pay 500 beers for one? No way! Why not? Because it doesn't cut any better than a Civivi. As for American made, that's something for Americans to drool over. I have quite a few American knives but not because they are American but because they are great knives (Spydercos and Benchmades) and are worth the money (Chaparral/ Griptilian/Manix 2). Anyone with a Spyderco Sharpmaker doesn't need a super steel. Knives should be touched up and stroped rather than resharpened.
@kimbalxyz2

Paul, I can see and understand your sentiments totally. I think the whole buy American comes from older guys like myself that grew up when American production was a great thing. I know that a lot of the imported knives have great quality and a great price. I would rather pay more for anything that helps the economy and the production of American products. Where I draw the line is, if the quality is not as good as a product at half it's price, that's a no go. However I totally understand peoples understanding of not investing into buying American if you don't live here !

There’s a place for 60HRC Magnacut, but a folder?!? With THAT blade geometry?!? That isn’t it. Besides, it’s been done before. It’s called LC200N which is a great steel too, but it’s much different than Magnacut that’s heat treated at 63-64HRC (and I’d like to see them target 65 with that blade geometry). People get so worked up about this and its so wrong on so many levels. 63-64 hardness is amazing. At this point, it is as tough as S35VN when it is treated to 60-61 but has far longer edge retention and corrosion resistance. 60-61 hardness is, believe it or not, also amazing. Just not for cardboard cutting fanbois. At this range, it has 2-3x the toughness of S35VN at the same hardness, whilst having only around 10% less edge retention. It is also more stain resistant. I have magnacut in both 60-61 and 63-64 and love both options for their uses. The problems start when fans want every maker to heat treat the same way every single time. That is selfish.
@NeevesKnives
@NeevesKnives Жыл бұрын
i completely dis this is a thick piece of magnacut the toughness is great from that alone, im personally worried about the the edges i can put on it and how long they hold, ive personally tested magnacut under 60 that lost its edge extremely fast, and it had trouble taking an edge atleast to the level i like, as far as taking a polished edge it was very slick afterwards and lost all bite from only a couple cuts, while other magnacut is the exact opposite at higher hrc, i dont think they all have to be the same but theres still a standard for a pocket knife. also at the higher hrc its still plenty tough however the edge retention goes up and its ability to take and hold very sharp edges goes up so i only see an upside to the higher hrc

@@wesb123 It's going to be more resistant to corrosion and chipping. Besides, it's a pocket knife that is fairly robust, so it should be fine for normal pocket knife tasks like cutting boxes, slicing apples, and snapping fishing line. BTW, properly sharpened D2 steel is no joke when it comes to making cuts. The idea that you need a 67 HRC pocket knife isn't even practical in real world use. Most people wouldn't know the difference unless you told them.

@@joelb1299 don’t try and decide for anyone what’s practical or not, I work for a living and for $500 the knife better slay demons and damn sure better out perform the $49 D2 Amazon special.. which it can’t. There’s guy’s building knives in their Pakistani garages that have more backbone than this.

I get why you wanted one but to spend that much money on a user knife with that heat treat, i could never bring myself to do it USA made or not. So many other amazing knives out there that have well treated magnacut that would provide a better overall cutting experience. I can hear the disappointment in your voice when talking about the heat treat and I'm hoping when it comes to testing it performs better than you expect. They are amazing well built knives but until they get the blade correct i will not be buying one. Thanks for the great vid and keep making sharp things fun and enjoyable

It's a Hinderer. Not sharp from the factory seems to be more of a tradition than a flaw, because they refuse to improve.

i been thinking about a hinderer, but honestly the squeeze isnt worth the juice. i been hearing more and more about how they heat treat there steels. and the price and exclusivity isnt helping. i feel like kicking the tires, but to the cult of hinderer they like the smell of there own shit, and it wouldnt matter anyways.

I’ll never buy a Hinderer for a couple reasons. Many stated in this video, their ridiculous HRC on all steels they use, and the fact he is such a jerk to the community who supports his products. I’ll use my $500+ on someone that I know will enjoy the business or get. Better product like a Koenig or something of that caliber.

Dude, i got a half track in magnacut and i am not happy with the steel at all. Glass, not sticky and came medium sharp and a very obtuse angle, but it is a half track so i knew that part but, the steel does not hold a edge longer than aus 8. I aint kidding. Maybe after a few sharpenings, who knows. If i didnt love the design, i would sell it, but i do
