Spot on! Like Water EP and Wish You Hell EP accurately show Wendy's style and skill. Like Water EP showcases her technical prowess such as belts, dynamics, registers, etc., whereas Wish You Hell EP allows us to look into another side of hers -- her capability of taking on different styles to express herself as a singer. Even though I'm not a fan of her stylistic choices sometimes, I'm still happy that she gets to have it as an avenue for self-expression and growth. (As we all now, SM had mostly dictated her career trajectory. Oh, I have a lot to say about this.)

imo (as a classically trained violinist), style is extremely important, but it should never EVER precede technique. first, it's harmful, you'll end up worse than where you started. second, you just won't sound good. singing, or any other skill for that matter, is like building a house. technique = the overall structure whereas style is, well, the aesthetics. would you buy a really pretty house if it were just rotten and full of problems inside or would you rather buy a slightly basic (maybe even a little ugly) house that is really sturdy for the same price? chances are you would buy the uglier house because there is less work to be done in order to maintain a proper living condition. same thing with singing. you should never sacrifice your overall stability and vocal health over a style that you can't perform safely. this is where i get into why style is important. style differentiates you from everything else. in order to be noticed or appeal to other people, you need style. basing this off the house example, would you buy an ugly house or a pretty house if both were well built and are the same price? more likely you would choose the pretty house, right? however, as much as style is important as it sets you different from others, there is a point where style becomes too much. if you are too different or your interpretation of a piece is in a completely opposite direction of what the original composer wanted, then it becomes weird and unsettling. kinda like an extremely maximalist house in the middle of a neighborhood with other "normal" looking houses. you would tend to avoid that house unless it appears to you. a real life example of this would be heifetz playing the violin. he is an extremely talented violinist, but he plays slow songs too fast, distracting the listener from the original meaning, making it feel weird. this was a rant, so forgive me if some things are a lil wonky. i must address that pretty vs ugly is very subjective and is not the perfect analogy, but i tried.

you're so right (not that you don't know that). personally, i basically just copied ariana grande while learning to sing and, whew, that damaged my voice for life tbh. it's a tough journey to master both skill and style, but especially after going into it just caring about sounding cool. i wish i could tell little me that, and all new singers - it's so important!!

@loopy-q1h2 ай бұрын
@@thenameisseanhong clearly not everything, as he can't play slower-paced pieces as well as others who are objectively not as good as him. ofc, i would love to hear him play live as well, but probably not something like meditation from thais. he's a very technical player, but his style is wayyyy too fast-paced for me. oistrakh and perlman are probably, in my opinion, much better all-rounders compared to heifetz.

Style without proper technique is like a ticking time bomb. Sure, it will define you and people might notice you instantly, but limitation becomes boundary where you stay in loop can't find any other genre or tunes that suit you, and it will become boring in a long run for the audience since you will probably sing it the same on and on. Sure, when it goes great it will be amazing but it's a gamble especially on a higher technique you havent yet to achieved. It would the case of some days you achieve it, some days you just aren't. Always learn the basic and strive for more technique difficulties, it will become way easier to choose a song, choose a stylistic approach to sing, even remix a song and make it your own. It's also elevate your characteristic (in terms of vocal) even better.

You’re so right about intention with stylistic vocals. I’ve always listened to a lot of rock music. I wanted to sound like the artists. So, I’d try mimicking their growls and gravely sound in their voices. It would make my voice so hoarse! It wasn’t until I started training myself to support my notes and focus on only accessing the healthy part of my range that I was able to start incorporating techniques like growling while not feeling like I’m putting any strain on my vocal cords. It’s the same as any other skill. Playing an instrument. Kicking a soccer ball. Painting a picture. You see those with advanced levels of training pulling off these insane techniques and you want to do exactly what they do. But you can’t take any shortcuts. You need to master the basics and use that as a foundation to build off of.

A singer with style and technique imo is Minnie of Gidle. She is well known for her siren-like/airy voice; and she also has a good technique (we can see it particularly in Lee Mujin's service). The thing is that in Gidle songs her voice isn't allowed to be at it's full potential; the producers/Soyeon mainly focus on her unique tone; and i believe that's why she's majoritarly known for her style, and a lot of people underestimate her technique (imo). I find it quite sad bcs I think Minnie could be so much more than just the soft/fantasy-like type of singer (bcs of how her stylized her voice is in idle's songs) but she don't get to shine that much in their groups songs (neither Miyeon btw). For example, Red Velvet Wendy, who is just... you know... Wendy... can shine in their groups songs (there's always a few high notes, adlibs or a specifically high-skill required part in their songs) ; and she gets to show maybe not her full but a lot of her potential; which is not the case with Minnie or either Miyeon... I really hope someday Minnie will go solo so she can show what she is capable of doing or just one of Gidle's songs letting her vocal skills and not only style, shine. Yeah Minnie can't be really compared to Wendy skill and technical wise, I just took her as an exemple bcs she is the first idol that came to my mind when I thought of an idol who is highlighted by their group's songs. This is just my opinion and doesn't mean I don't like Idle's songs (they're my ult group) but more of like a thing i noticed through my years of stanning as a Neverland... I'm really curious about what y'all think about this situation !

One thing I’d like is more detail on what technique you’re actually criticizing and complimenting. Back on the video topic, a good example Janis Joplin, an incredible artist who touched so many with her raw voice. But I heard she was never trained & that it was harmful, along with her lifestyle. This may be a myth but i heard that later in her career she actually improved. Many think criticizing bad/off technique means they’re terrible. It doesn’t diminish our enjoyment or their music imo.

The fact that people tie showing concern with 'bashing' is just ridiculous to me, but I can say that until I'm blue in the face and there will still always be people arguing against it. I think it's deeply satisfying to see growth in artists, and how are they supposed to grow if everyone constantly tells them they're perfect, especially if their technique is potentially doing damage in the long-term? I think there's a very normal, neutral middle ground of pointing out room for growth while still commending what already exists, and for what it's worth, I think you do a very good job at staying in that middle ground.

I'm pretty sure people are "annoyed" because he uses the same clips as examples. There are songs specially ballads that you can hear her supporting high notes without any type of stylistic choice. For example 4 memory or even recently fireflies. We can agree she isn't the best singer of her gen but she has variety, huge vocal range and personal style. And when people claim her vocals are getting worse it's so nonsense for me as she has shown nothing more than improvement over the years. I do think it could be concerning if she showed problems with reaching the notes over a long period of time, but if there wasn't any drastic change in 10 years of singing we can assume it isn't such a big problem. The only thing I noticed is that the high amount of tours and events have make all the girls a bit overworked and they sound more tensed during all the Apocalypse era. They should let them rest more taking to account they always try to sing live even if it's over the backtrack. Sorry if this comes as arguing because that's not my intention, I just wanted to add my opinion over it and I can totally get what you mean.

i've also noticed that sunoo is technically a decent vocalist but he doesn't really have style. Can you elaborate on this if you get what i mean ??😭
@ummuilham3119Ай бұрын
Not best tier in Gen4, Sunoo is quite good as a singer. Unfortunately, there was a lot of hatred from antis outside fandom toward him in 2021-2022. In the end of 2021 covid restriction was reduced, Enhypen began to make offline stage and more busy schedule. In the middle 2022, Sunoo had to take hiatus for 2 months. No idol would ever choose hiatus, unless his health condition is quite bad, not just common flu nor mild injury. Concert in Japan (Manifesto World Tour) Sunoo was almost absen due to his health condition. 2023-2024, Enhypen have more hectic schedule. I see that Sunoo begins to be in stuck condition for his vocal skill. Sunoo has taken hiatus in 2022, it seems he chooses to maintain his health condition as #1 priority than other additional activity. Probably, he prefers having rest than doing additional personal training (gym, vocal, etc). Maintaining health is more important than increasing his skill. Not just Sunoo, I see Jungwon, Jake, and Heeseung are in the same condition: stuck in vocal skill due to their heavy busy schedule.

He doesn’t actually mention Doyoung, but he does show footage of Jaehyun. He has said that Doyoung is a favorite of his. I don’t dare make a list of popular and well regarded vocalists who leave me cold: some of them are in this video, and people would be coming after me with pitchforks if I named them. I will say that my main problem with many K-pop vocal groups (especially 4th gen boy groups) is that their voices are practically interchangeable: I can close my eyes and have no idea who’s singing. A major reason I love NCT 127 is that each member has a distinct vocal tone.

I just don't really know what you expect from insomnias when you talk about Siyeon and her technique like that It's like the same record over and over again I don't know much about singing and no matter if your characterization is true or not, it is definitely upsetting and annoing on the third repetition Also a bit weird that you used a clip where she tries to be louder then backing vocals. I agree that she sounds forced in that clip, but she doesn't sound like that all the time I'm your casual watcher, but I guess your channel will be marked with "do not reccomend" from now on I'm just annoyed at this point your opinion or my opinion won't change her technique anyway

Technics mean nothing if you are unappealing to the audience, dont have catchy songs and stage presence. People judge artist as a whole, not only his vocals but only sm stan are obsessed with their fave's shouting high notes and dont understand why it is outdated opinion. There are many good vocalists everywhere, better than sm clones who sound the same but there are much less good performers and even less good artists. So, keep being delulu, sm akgaes, you are funny. Sehun and Mark being more popular than so-called vocal kings is very good example.
