Ted Danson's switch from making a mocking apology to a sincere one was so great! You could tell that he really meant it the second time. Great analysis of the show! I always enjoy watching reactors who can talk about how the series affects them. It's my comfort show, and there always seems to be an episode that will help me with whatever I'm experiencing in my life.

I can absolutely see how it could help with experiences. There is just so much more to it than I could have imagined.

So, my undergraduate degree was in theatre, and I’ve taken A LOT of acting classes and the like over the years. Saying the same line many times with different emotions and inflections is a very common technique to practice acting but it’s REALLY rare in actual shows or movies because that situation basically NEVER happens in real life and so it’s extremely hard to pull it off in an actual scene without looking really stupid or cringey. Seriously, even talented, trained, seasoned actors would find this incredibly difficult to do. Ted Danson NAILS it here. Both ways he says those lines feel entirely justified, in-character, sincere… in just any metric you can measure “good” acting, Ted Danson kocks it out of the park.

On a personal note, this scene hits me so hard because I know exactly how hard it is to sincerely apologize for hurting someone you care about AND how difficult it is to admit to feeling weak and/or vulnerable. There is such a deep-seated fear that admitting a mistake will somehow make the situation worse, that you’ll lose the person you’re apologizing to, that the moment you lower your defenses is the exact moment an attack will come, etc. and Ted Danson’s portrayal is so subtle it allows all of that to be seen on his face. And the look of relief on his face when Chidi accepts his apology nearly makes me cry every time I watch it. And I’ve rewatched this show all the way through, like, 25 times, no exageration. It’s so good.

I agree. Ted Danson's acting is a triumph in this show. I've watched a lot of reactions to this show and with all the theories of what was going on and what was likely to occur about the 1st season, virtually no one really expected the twist and I feel it was in large part cause you empathize with Michael and you can't imagine Ted Danson as a villian. As well, to this scene, I feel like he did mean the apology the 1st time, he was just too guarded to say it sincerely. The 2nd delivery still makes me tear up.

your empathy and understanding for Tahani is so adorable! You are right its the only thing she has liked with no ones input.

Your expression during the little girl's part absolutely made the reaction. Thanks Shelma.

Love this episode. And a great exploration of the trolley problem (which in NYC is sometimes described as the subway problem).
