Just dropping by to agree with all the Captive Prince comments. The author is one of the very few who does the slow burn enemies to lovers trope correctly, so you absolutely have to read the whole trilogy to get the full picture. It's so well done, and the series actually has a plot and is full of political intrigue and strategising, which, as far as I can tell, can't be said about the majority of the stuff that gets recommended on TikTok.

Captive Prince is an amazing romance- it's VERY slow burn, so it makes sense that the first book feels like a dark romance, but the relationship builds beautifully in the next books and is actually pretty healthy

I love that the entire comments section is about The Captive Prince😍 It's one of my all-time favorite book series, literally in the top 3. It's a very dark political fantasy with a real enemies-to-lovers subplot. And yes, as many have said above, you must read the entire series to fully appreciate it. Especially the romance part.
@kyotojabami2508Ай бұрын
I always recommend reading the first two books of the Captive Prince trilogy together. The second book really shines light on the series. I agree that it’s more of a grim dark fantasy over a complete romance but the romance subplot picks up as the series progresses and becomes a cornerstone of the series.
@marquezaranzaАй бұрын
Oh no 😭😂… the happiness and the pain with captive prince being read it’s real. To be honest, I find it impossible to think about this story outside of the context of the trilogy. A common misconception is that captive prince (first book) is a romance, but I don’t think that was the goal at all. It’s a slow slow slow burn enemies to lovers, and you only start to understand better on the second book how does that work. I remember thinking I could not imagine how the author was going to pull them together after everything but then she did and it was beautiful and visceral. I would not classify the romance itself as a dark romance. What happens in the first book is done through hate and vengeance, but once the actual romance starts is a pretty sweet and loving relationship. Is difficult to explain. You just have to be there 😂 I do agree with your assessment, though. The story is very political and the world is very grim and dark, making the characters very morally gray. And yet, I went from despising Laurent to loving him. How does that work? This is one of my favorite enemies to lovers, nothing beats it.

The romance in Captive Prince picks up a lot in the second and third books! Personally I think the whole trilogy should have been published as just one book. I'd very curious to hear what you think about the whole series if you decide to read it!

just another comment echoing the Captive Prince series is probably one of the best enemies to lovers ever written, and I really think it would be worth your time to continue the series. I think it's probably also one of the only fantasy series with romance involved that gives enough time to both the characters and their relationship, and the actual world and plot. I finished this series a few years ago and I still think of these characters as some of my favorites ever.

The Captive Prince trilogy is one of my all time favourite m/m romances and I completely agree with you in a couple of things: the setting is dark/grimdark, it is very political and full of plottwist as the series goes on, and one really can't talk about the first book alone without the sequels, as you pointed out it's a trilogy and the story is not complete in the first book. I wouldn't call the first book romantic or a romance either, it's not meant to be (I think). It's setting up the history, the events, the politics and the relationships and shows you how brutal the kingdoms and characters are. But book 2 and 3? Some of the most beautiful lines in any smut books I've read (and I've read some lol) are in those two books. They're beautifully written and the love between the MCs is devastating and visceral and so so pretty. So yes, the first book isn't fantasy romance, but the trilogy as a whole is (and truly one of the best). Thank you for reading it and having a discussion about it, I hope you'll enjoy the sequels, if you read them! Also, thank you for your perspective (always) because you really look at the books in more than just one way and you're respectful of other opinions, that's why I like your videos. ❤ Hope you have a great day!

captive prince is the best enemies to lovers romance i've ever read, it has a relationship that is ACTUALLY made of enemies and not just people who kinda dislike each other or are sorta rivals who are secretly into each other all along. the main thing that annoys me with romantasy is how it loves the enemies to lovers trope but seemingly never actually gets it. you'll have a main pair with the slight disagreement being labeled as enemies to lovers and they'll be all over each other by page 50. captive prince is literally the mothership of the best of the best when it comes to this trope, not only are the two mains princes of warring enemy kingdoms but one of them actually killed the brother of the other. i remember reading the first book of this series and continuing on to the second one simply on the sheer power of curiosity, because i literally couldn't imagine the writer being able to believably convince me about these two ending up as legitimate lovers. what i got was a stunner in every sense! i couldn't believe someone could write a romance like this out of a set up that was shown in book1. book2 is actually my favorite for every single thing it does with these characters, such a dedicated portrayal of actual real romantic attraction against all odds. a lot of people get put off by the 1st book either because of the grim or the sexual tones but please. PLEASE by all means please listen to your intuition and continue with the series to get the whole picture, the whole conversation as you put it. because your intuition is right and this series has only shown you a setting, a cast and some political intrigue for which most doesn't even make a lot of sense yet. but if you give a chance to the other two books you'll see why people call it one of the best enemies to lovers romances (and the political maneuvering only gets better too). anyone who stops at book1 missed out on a gem for real. it's one of those books where a lot of people miss out on it because book1 doesn't conform to what people are structurally used to getting from first books of a trilogy. but cs pacat wrote this series more like a long fresco is made to be looked at. the books in the trilogy are made to be read continuously, back to back, as if it could be just one big book. so yeah, it doesn't align with how most first books are. yeah the main romance is enemies to lovers who do spend the whole first book as the enemies part of said romance. that is what will later on make their romance that much more beautiful and do justice to the trope as it always should be. slow burn at its finest with a stunner execution!
@AseAPSАй бұрын
Romanticy should work for me but most of the time it just doesn't. Most of the ones I've tried feel like they're failing at both elements of the book. I don't know. A lot of the time, it feels like both the fantasy and the romance elements are half baked. For every Spinning Silver I find like 10 Crescent Cities... To be clear, I'm not a prude. I'm totally fine having smut if the rest of the book is good but Crescent City was really REALLY bad! haha

I find that when I try romantasy, it's more often a romance book that takes place in a fantasy world. So I'm more on the side of preferring fantasy and I enjoy the occasional healthy romantic relationship. I find for ones I've given a shot it's more often not healthy romantic relationships and very little fantasy. Thank you for giving all these a try - it helps me know what to avoid completely and what might be good candidates to give a try.

I don’t generally comment but I want to back the comments section on the Captive Prince series! NGL the first book is rough and I totally understand why someone would be turned off by the first book. It is does get very, very dark. Someone looking for a romance in the first book is liable to be VERY startled by the content and ask “this is it? This is where we are starting?”. So I want to reassure- The series is hiding its hand even more than it seems in the first book. On re-reads it’s very fun to see just how much Damen is missing and mis-interpreting. I recommend that anyone who had didn’t completely hate the characters or the writing style, continue on to Prince’s Gambit and decide if you want to continue after a few chapters of that. In my opinion, the series eventually answers for all of the wrongs that happen in the first book whether in retribution or more information. It’s the only true enemies to lovers romance I’ve ever read with excellently developed characters . C.S, Pacat is a master of twists and it all comes out to an extremely satisfying outcome. I hope that you will give the second book a try and continue with the series! c:

I really enjoyed aprk of the everflame. I'm on the third book now and the "romance" is really starting to happen now and I do appreciate how drawn out it was. I dont mind romance in a fantasy cause it makes the characters seem more real. I really enjoy the fantasy portion of this series though

@RobyneReadsАй бұрын
I loved Reign & Ruin too, and have read all the books out so far in the series. Book 1 is one of the best, but a couple others might be better imo. The romance was very well developed, and yes the politics was great. (On this subject you might like Vela Roth's Blood Grace. The FMC and MMC are diplomats and they have a very wholesome romance). Spark of the Everflame is very good. Glow of the Everflame is top tier. Daughter of No Worlds is also a favourite. You really need to be patient and read all 3 to get the full world building picture. There are a couple of key characters that are introduced later and lots of foreshadowing to piece the current world of Max and Tisaana with them, but it is a heartbreakingly beautiful story. Radiance was fine, I think I felt about the same way as you did on that one. I loved When the Moon Hatched. I've read ACOTAR twice and I'm struggling to see the similarities between it and WTMH. Maybe a bit with the found family aspects. I'm not saying it's perfect and it took me a minute to get into it, but I loooved it. I also thought it was very unique. Spoiler: . . . . . . I enjoyed the idea of a FMC 200+ years old who has a daughter (although she has forgotten this). And that she has another creature in her mind that takes over when needed to protect her (she was hatched from a dragon moon).

the captive prince cannot be read or judged as a romance by only reading one book. C.S pacat always set up the first books of her series as an introduction of the world and characters but the main stories and actual romance only start in the middle of the second book.... it's the slowest of slow burns, but to me it's the realest because there is never that instalove that for me seems unrealist, the characters fall in love with time and by knowing the other more and more... and yes the Political intrigue is the best I have ever seen

captive prince as a trilogy IS a romance though, tbh i would rec to read two of the first books together if one wants to know to continue or not, because yes the first book has no romance, but the slow burn picks up in the journey, and the three of them make the BEST slow burn ACTUAL enemies to lovers trilogy/book ever. book 1 can feel shocking for some people but that is exactly the reason its written that way, from damen's pov. its meant to be depraved, to show exactly the kind of society vere is. besides that, the plot is really good, the second book is more into politics, i also think it has great twists.usually ppl comment on the whole trilogy when they havent finished it (only ater book 1, very negatively), but just as you said it isnt the same as a standalone, because the story develops so much after that first one. i still think about laurent and damen 5+ years after the first time i've read these books. btw the reason capri isnt talked about a lot (outside of mm book reader circles) is that people judge too much and only parrot the echo chamber there is about these books, they dont even bother to check if the things they say are facts. before i read the trilogy i thought these were kinky books (which is fine, dark erotica is fine, i wish people werent such puritans and just let ppl read whatever in fiction), but in reality the couple is very vanilla and devoted once they fall in love. id love that you continue the series, it truly deserves more love and praise, even as a popular mm trilogy i dont think its appreciated enough

CP trilogy is one of my favourite books and i am glad you are trying it. :) That being said, the first book imo is not romance at all! The romance really starts in the book 2. Daughter of No Worlds is one of my favorite series! I wouldn't exactly classify it as romantasy, though. The romance takes a backseat to the plot, definitely in later books. I'd say Spark of the Everflame and subsequent books fall into much the same category. To put it in terms that more people can understand - I'd say it's the difference between Throne of Glass (Fantasy, but with romance) and ACOTAR (where romance is the driver of the plot and the plot is.. secondary). In Daughter of No Worlds the plot and the world are developed a lot more in the second and third books so I'd recommend you check them out if you're interested at all

I'm actually reading the Reign and Ruin series due to your previous recommendation of this one, I'm currently on the 3rd book and have massively enjoyed it so far. I think it has the right balance of romance, fantasy, culture and politics. I absolutely love seeing diverse cultures in fantasy, my home country was under Ottoman occupation for some 600 years so seeing Turkish culture was such a treat, I absolutely loved it! I tried A daughter of no worlds, and while I really liked it and was so looking forward to the love interest pov, the male voice narrator was so irritating to me I ended up DNF-ing it. Eventually I'll get around to actually reading it and I'm sure it will be fine.

Carissa is probably my favourite fantasy romance writer purely because I think her character writing is so well developed in comparison to other popular authors, and it makes up for the reduced world building we get (for me). I do think she manages a great blend in the world building to make the two genres feel balanced unlike some where I would consider it romance with a fantasy background. A topic for another day though, the development of romantasy as a genre by marketing 😊

I first borrowed Daughter of No Worlds through my library as an audiobook, but the voice actress for the FMC, was bad (imo). The book had two Narrators/Voice Actors for the two MCs for the dual POVs. The character was supposed to have an accent, but what the woman narrator would do was just raise the pitch of her voice, and it made the character sound like a child which didn't vibe with me being a Fantasy Romance. So I bought the kindle edition when it was on sale and that made the reading experience more enjoyable.

please Please continue with Captive Prince. We need more youtubers to talk about it. Definitely top 3 series for me. I didn't know I liked reading about politics until I've read this series. And the slow burn romance is amazing.

The second & third book of Daughter of No Worlds opens up the world way more & leans heavily on the fantasy side.

I’m halfway through the third book in the Spark of the Everflame series and there is much more romance in the second and third books! It’s also a very slow burn, to the point where I wonder if the couple will even get together before the final (fourth) book.

Same sentiments about When the Moon Hatched. I DNF’d it at about 40% because I didn’t connect with the main character and was not invested in the story.

Please read Captive Prince sequels, they're actually the best and different from book one.

I feel the exact same as you about Daughter of No Worlds! I loved the characters and the romance but I think even just an extra sentence of exposition about the politics or magic here and there could've made it exponentially better. It was hard to care about all the action scenes because I needed more context.

New to your channel and have watched a few recently. I have when the moon hatched and it's interesting you say it's similar to throne of glass. As I'm quite new to fantasy Im pretty sure I'll love it, but I wondered if you recommended throne of glass as another lady I follow on KZbin mentioned this and said how good it is!! Thank you for all your reviews they're so helpful ❤

IDK if you want any suggestions but I think "A Fantasy Fan Tries Historical / Gothic Fiction" would be interesting! I think you may have already read In The Warm Hands of Ghosts, but I'm thinking along that sort of the vibe. I like historical pieces because you can see how humans deal with things when the world looked different, which I think is really similar to the appeal of fantasy. I'm not done with the video, but I had to comment that Luna bear never fails to make me smile!! She's so sweet.

Sometimes the appeal of fantasy romance is the slow burn, meaning it takes a few books for the two love interests to get together. Still fantasy romance, just slow burn

I'm late to this video BUT BUT BUT thank you for your entertaining and detailed reviews. I fully agree on your take concerning Carissa Broadbents book. The characterisation is done well but the world building is boardering a little on just telling me things but not showing them. I read the duology with Oraya and Raihn and I liked the characters but I did not buy that she was a supreme fighter for example. Because of that I too lost some interest in the book but i'll admit that the author has a knack for making you want to read the story still. I highly recommend the fantasy books from Ilona Andrews. I love them to pieces and they will always be my S-tier fantasy books. Overall each series is so very well balanced concerning the worldbuilding, the well thoughtout plots, very likeable and interesting characters (even the villains are so compelling and layered), adventure and the growth of the characters and story arcs. The Kate Daniels series has a unique world building and my most beloved and credible fmc. It's very closely followed by the Hidden Legacy series (which leans a little more towards romantasy but in the best way) and the Innkeeper Chronicles. So far I haven't read a book from then that I didn't enjoy. I'd really like it if you'd give them a try to hear your thoughts on them.

in Daughter of No Worlds, book 2 & 3 expand on the world a LOT. The romance takes a backseat and they are straight up action.

I think you might enjoy the next two books in the daughter of no worlds trilogy a bit more than the first as they become more fantasy first romance second and you learn a lot more about the world and the magic.

So we are all in agreement that Captive Prince is THE standard for a brilliantly crafted, beautiful enemies to lovers story. But what do we read next? 😭 nothinggggg else compares
@kombuchas468412 күн бұрын
The only book series that ever compared was The Foxhole Court trilogy. I would HIGHLY recommend it. You have to read it up until the final book before the payoff hits, and it pays off super well. Imho the slowburn was done even better than Captive Prince

There’s fantasy with romance subplots and then there’s fantasy romance. I always consider fantasy romance as a sub genre of romance. Romance as a genre needs to have a HEA or a HFN. If you remove the romance, you don’t really have a story anymore.

A series that I hear so little about, yet I think encompasses all that you’re talking about is A E Rayne’s The Furyck Saga, a vikingesc fantasy world with dark magic and romance, though the romance is somewhat secondary to the story. I highly recommend

The book "Silk and sand" did well with being a love story in a fantasy setting, I would say. The world IS fantasy-different from "ours", and even though outside of the dessert the plot is happening in, it is not really flash out, that doesn't really matter, since it is happening _in the dessert_. The fantastic elements are incorporated in a subtle way, not explaining everything right into your face. It is just there, and most of it naturally works, for the rest the reader can wonder along the pov. The relationship has lust with a fast onset, but is emotionally naturally developing and well build. There is political intruige hinted, but not too deeply explored. The pov is splitted, but not nearly evenly distributed, which works surprisingly well. Ok, I'm not good at advertising books 😅 just trying to say go read it, it's a nice book and the second one came out recently too
