I heard a homesteading lady say something one time that summed up everything that I felt about growing your own food and just one simple fraze. She said that growing your own food was like God allowing you to have a small part in creation. And that is exactly how I feel every time I plant a seed and I get to watch it come out of the ground and grow and produce food and I get to step back and watch God's Wonder. I say this with tears even thinking about how He allows me to take a small part in creation.

You are the epitome of all that is good about social media! I have found my kindred spirits through youtube... they are all over the country and we dont get to visit in person but you all feel like family. And this life leaves little time for socializing and travel so I visit with my friends while I'm shelling peas or folding laundry I can watch all my favorite people show me what they're up to and gather inspiration. I get so attached to animals too...I think you have to love them to live this life or you'd be miserable. And their loss always hits me hard...it really is the hardest part. But getting to see them live in the moment the way that only animals can do is a wonderful lesson for us to also live in the moment and not in the past or future. You are a blessing to me and many others...much love to you Jeremiah and the kids ♡♡♡

Girl, this is one of the best devotionals yet! Truth! So sorry about Mr.Darcy and the other buck. Today I buried a young rooster that the others beat up. Life and death.....but the creating of life, hatching and growing and God living in our lives! Yes, it is worth it! Thank you for so much truth it hurt and brought a flood of tears..

It all makes us stronger & there's a silver lining to everything. I raised pygmy's, was a member of NPGA, showed them, they were worth a lot of $, I spent a lot of $ on them, they were my pets. One night a pack of dogs came thru & I woke up to a goat massacre. I was horrified. I feel your pain, AND your Joy!!! Nothing good comes without hardships. God warns us of LONGSUFFERING. God bless you sister.

Why do I end up weeping during many of your videos? The lifestyle you (and so many others that I watch on KZbin) are living is a dream I have had for 40 years. I don't know why God has chosen to deny me that dream, but it is the one thing that grieves me. Watching others live that life is both painful and uplifting.

Beautifully said. As I get older and start having more aches and pains what you have said gives me inspiration. Now I am even more anxious for Spring to arrive so I can see my dreams arrive too. We need to keep pushing on to our fruitful end. I asked my now 93 year old dad years ago, Dad when are you going to sit and take it easy? He said, if I sit, I die. So, so many years later I'm trying to live by my Dad's words. Planting seeds given to us from God. Planting them in the earth, given to us from God. Worked by us by the grace of God. Harvested and eaten by us so we can once again start the whole circle again. God bless you and your family in all that you do.

Best Video I've seen of Roots & Rescue, yet. So humbling and heart-wrenching. Such an intimate look at the heart of Jess whom I, like so many others, have come to love so much with her vast knowledge of gardening that over-flows into not just her love for God & her Family & friends, but all creatures on her Farm. Congratulations Jess on your book. I'm sure many of us would-be gardeners will find it just as insightful as all those others who will benefit from your vast knowledge of gardening, even though you haven't been doing it for too many years, yet. God Bless You & your Family and your Roots & Rescue Farm.

Amen ! Mama . Anything that is good will cost you . But if you love the life ,you will do the work . I live in Florida and all we have here is sand . I have been trying so hard to grow flowers and vegetables but they don't servive. I tried raised beds at one point and even that didn't work . I am trying again this year with container gardening ,been having some problems but I will not give up . I am 73 years old suffering with fibromyalgia and there are many things I can't do ,but I will not give up ! I was raised on a farm and I loved it . I would see the hard work my parents would put out day after day but they were grateful for the blessings the Lord provided ! My husband doesn't like to plant or care for a garden but o boy does he like to eat the harvest . So he builds ,shovels ,mixes and does all the heavy work so I can do the planting . Anyways May God continue to bless your family and the love you all share for farming . TFS Hugs,Carmen

Jess, only God could have me watching every video on your channel I can for almost a year and tonight being the first time this one came across my suggestions. This is the most beautiful video of yours I’ve seen. I felt this one deeply. Closing in on my first year of homesteading, and largely because of you, I look at the beautiful in my shortcomings and give myself grace in my learning experiences. I have felt lazy and unqualified at times. I poured my heart into my garden and had a very small harvest with many failures. But the lessons I’ve learned and how much deeper God has drawn me in have been indescribable. This life is so incredibly hard but beautiful and totally worth it. Bless you and your family ♥️

Such truth in what you spoke? I was first gifted goats after I had resigned from my job I loved as a RN . I felt that was what God created me to do. I resigned to have yet another surgery for a permanent colostomy. I was 40. A friend said I have a buck and a doe I want to give you. I had always desired goats I don't even know why. I sat in this tiny goat pen in a lawn chair w these 2 wild and wily goats. I fed them leaves and they fed my soul. I was so broken and depressed. Everyday I got up and I sat w these goats slowly they learned to trust me , slowly I healed on the outside, and so quickly I loved them. In my lack of experience I didn't know that the chicken feed and rabbit feed the buck kept getting into was going to be his demise. Urinary calculi developed and this buck who was now so tame and trusted me screamed in agony. I did all I could , I called the vet to be told there wasn't much to be done. He died a long painful death. My heart was broken and I filled with gilt. I knew my lack of experience took his life. I'm still traumatized when i think back of his screams. Little did i know that before he passed he had bred my doe. He blessed me w 2 beautiful babies . I still have the original doe and her 3 generations of babies. I still wake every morning to run out to milk Big Mama. She is so tamed I can even lay down w her and lay my head on her. My physical health is still a challenge but this goat that was such a gift bc God sent a friend to give me the desire of my heart and help heal my spirit.

I watch a handful of homesteaders. I grew up in the country on a nonworking farm, moved a bit, dreamed, and ended up with a homestead of my own. I too am a jump in head first type of girl, I research as I go and then some. A huge fault of mine is admitting that I need help. Somehow in my mind if I can't fix it it is a huge personal failure. I have lost....more than I ever would want to admit, not out of pride, but bad timing and crazy parasite years. This video was awesome. I rarely am moved to tears (gotta keep that stoic front after all) but this one did. It hit every nail on the head. Thanks for posting it Jessica.

I am in awe of your ability to make real the dream of homesteading. I started homesteading out of an inate desire to be free of societal norms, to be free of the food that is killing us, to grow food that will save my family's life! You state exactly what we now know is true: it is so so hard. But the results are infinitely rewarding. I, too, accept the challenge and will be creating a "Good, Bad, and Ugly" video. I look forward to watching others. Glad I stopped here first! BTW....you made this old man cry....now stop it! God bless you!!!!

My precious 18 year old cat slapper went outside about a month ago and disappeared...she was sick...my heart cry’s out where’s my baby..how much more parents who have missing children must suffer...I know from my reaction to my cat..I’ll be a mess with the cycle of life on the farm...I’ll step in and take whatever happens..thanks for the warning...I think though in the end it all works to the good for our dads kids.

Just subbed today - so on my 3rd (or 4th?) video. In awe of God's tender care in my healing journey. You have just summed up my last 2 years as I started homesteading with chickens and gardening; friends and family thinking I was nuts; last year getting Lyme and other tick related infections and having to give them away as I was just too sick to care for them; halting my big garden project was heartbreaking. Your words of faith are like a healing balm to my soul and dreams. Getting back to the place I need to be - putting Him 1st and trusting in his timing. Resting in the blessings of each day. Picking up where I left off (the garden is moving forward!) . It is all for my good. Its a roller coaster ride for sure. So grateful for My Seat Belt. May God bless the work of your hands and the desires of your heart.

It made even the hard man I am, one set stone hard in the realities that come from caring for animals, they live, fill your life with joy at times while others with calamity and great despair. I remember everyone I have lost over the past 58 years. But with great tragedy comes opportunity to renew life and continue on. God Bless you and your family. Mr. Tom

Corrie Tenibom Said. I always place everything I love on the palm of a open hand n offer it to God in worship. When I clasp it tightly it hurts more when he prys my fingers loose to take it home with him. What wonderful truth you just shared. Being I'm old have lost many animals. Some where hurt badly & suffering greatly & I chose to end their misery even tho it increased mine to do so. God Bless you child !

Jess I have watched so many of your videos... this one is my favorite. Your vulnerability and honesty is such a blessing. Your testifying of the goodness of God and glorifying Him is so beautiful! Thank you for your courage and boldness for shining your light into the darkness. If you are reading this in 2022 it would be so great to see you do an update of where you are with what you shared in this video. You have come so far, it would be great to see how your family has grown, your wisdom has increased, you now have a bigger commitment on your new homestead and everything else you do. Thank you for this video it has proven how God plants desire in our hearts and when we want what He wants he makes it happen. Keep on trusting, believing, dreaming, and pursuing what He has for you, Miah, your kids, and Roots and Refuge. To God be the glory!!!

We went through worm issues last year, its heartbreaking. Lost my 2 oldest goats from my ignorance. Barber pole worms. Added a new buck and 2 months later lost 3 does and my new buck the adult fella survived. I am not pleased with the breeder at all. I'm sorry the herbal path she used didn't help, and really impacted my herd. Those 2 girls were like pets. Get a regular fecal done it saved whats left of my herd.

So saddened to hear the news of Mr Darcy and Huckleberry. Does your vet know of anything you can do to keep any of the rest of your herd from going through that? 😢

I have a couple questions. How do you ever take a family vacation? That's the only thing that holds me back from expanding to other animals. Also, did I see compost boxes in your garden? Love your channel! 🐮🐷🌱😍

I am legit in tears right now; this was so beautiful and I believe were the actual words of God that I needed to hear. THANK YOU. I long for this life so much, but I am also so afraid of the costs and of the ugly parts of myself that I see coming out even just with my little container garden in our townhome. I don't *want* to look those ugly parts in the eye, you are right that it is for our good that they are confronted and pruned from us. It is Grace that we do so. Thank you SO so so so so much for your honesty, for your truth, and for the bravery you show by exposing these parts of yourself. I adore your channel and appreciate you so much. Thank you thank you thank you.

I love your garden. I planted chard this year but it seems to not want to thrive in my garden. maybe it is to hot. Where is the best place to grow it? Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Worship is the greatest way to deal with life's tests and trials. We learn to walk with God and experience the different stages of life. You are a true worshiper. Amen

I don’t know what I believe in when it comes to religion. I normally can’t stand listening to ppl “ preach “ or talk about god in a churchy way. I don’t mind that ppl do it just choose to stay away from it. BUT YOU. YOU, are the only person I choose to watch and find myself enjoying listening to talk about god in a churchy way! You have help me relax when I am stressed and calm me down when I am frustrated by the JOYS of parenting and marriage. Lol. Just wanted to comment and let you know how you have helped me.
