The kid who played Chunk was so naturally funny that during the interrogation scene where he's confessing everything the director just let him ad-lib a bunch of confessions and went on for about 45 minutes straight making up different hilarious confessions all while maintaining the crying. Also, I love when the dad rips up the papers and throws them in the air because you can see a different set of ripped up papers being immediately thrown in behind his hands to make it seem like there was more ripped up than it actually was. Lol

The Goonies was the quintessential "pack of friends" kid's movie of the 80's. Before it, the only thing similar I can remember is The Little Rascals (1955) which was way before my time but was played in re-runs on television. After the success of The Goonies, we would occasionally see another gang of friends on bikes pop up in the movies or on television: Stand By Me (1986), The Monster Squad (1987), It (1990), Hook (1991), The Sandlot (1993). Each show contained the same tropes of danger, adventure, and friendship. 80's kids could relate because most of us had bicycles and were latch key kids (we would come home from school to an empty home because our parents were still at work). So as you can imagine we got into a lot of trouble, adventure, danger (both real and imagined), and fun. We pestered, pranked, bullied, and relied on each other until our parents came home to cook dinner. It was fun and it was scary but we took care of each other: brothers, sisters, cousins, and friends. Good times!

it's because this particular group of kids lived in the goon docks, it's the poorer neighborhood in Astoria, Oregon we hear mikie mention. The slang term "goonie" to be used to refer to a good group of friends originated from this film. But the reason they call each other 'goonies" in the context of the movie is because of they're all from the goon docks.

@@jayphil2563 They were circus gorillas that drove around town in a golf cart and then a stolen car. They crashed into Troy's sports car at the end after the goonies refuse to sign the papers. There are lots more unseen deleted scenes like Andy taking the goonies oath before the kids find leeches all over themselves. Mikey was also supposed to tell a story about his parents losing on Let's Make a Deal because they picked the wrong door. And later they find a passageway with three doors next to a skeleton. The clue says to push the "funny bone" on the skeleton to make it point to the right door. They don't know where to find it, then Stef pushes its crotch and it points to door #2.

1980s are pretty infamous for just not sugar-coating kids' films, whether it's death or scary scenes. - Who Framed Roger Rabbit had the child-traumatizing scene of Doom murdering a cartoon shoe. - Littlefoot's mom dies in Land Before Time. - Artax in the swamp in The Neverending Story. - Dark Crystal has a LOT of secondary characters who die. - Secret of NIMH had the main villain kill two characters and almost murders a bunch of kids. - Return to Oz had the freaky Wheelers. I'm sure everyone who was a kid in that decade can think of a lot of similar movies where thinking back, you wonder - "they made this movie for KIDS? I'm not sure that Disney/Pixar would make something this dark now."

They are the same note _now_ but historically they may not have been depending on how the instrument was tuned. It's complicated. Before equal temperament was developed in the 1600's you had to tune a piano differently for each key you wanted to play in. And there was just enough of a difference in frequency of the note at the end of one scale to not quite overlap the beginning of the next octave. Some keyboards were made during this period that actually offered different keys with different tones for enharmonic notes like A# and Bb, D# and Eb. One would be used for the ascending notes and the other sounded better for descending notes and other chords. They are called "enharmonic keyboards" and could conceivably have been around during the period that this trap might have been made.

Goonies live in Goon Docks....the part of Astoria, that is why they are called Goonies. ;-) And you can find some deleted scenes and some, which weren't finished.

Also, according to GooniesWiki, Astoria is a port city in Oregon, United States. It is the main setting in The Goonies. It was named after Fort Astoria, set up by American Fur Company investor John Jacob Astor. The town is divided into two parts: the Goon Docks, the poorer, working-class side, and the "Hillside", the richer side. That's where the movies gets its name, The Goonies from

It's always interesting to see millennials react to the beginning of this movie with, "This is a kid's movie??" You really need to see more kids movies from the 80s. Times were different and a lot of them tend to be a bit darker and not as nearly toned down as kids movies are today. In fact, the following are all darker than The Goonies but still considered kids movies (which I would still recommend that you see 🙂): Gremlins Labyrinth The Neverending Story Legend The Dark Crystal Beetlejuice

Really enjoying your reactions! You were wondering about the pirate ship at the end, and whether they were going to go "catch" it. That's actually covered in the novelization. The aftermath to the Goonies' adventure, as described in detail in the novel, makes the happy ending in the movie even sweeter. In short: The Coast Guard eventually towed the Inferno to shore, to protect shipping. At that point, the entire ship and its contents -- including the treasure -- became Mikey's property (due to ship salvage laws). With all that loot on hand, he and his family were able to turn Astoria into one of the best and happiest small towns in America. Perhaps sweetest of all: The novel ends with a celebration for the Cohen family: A bar mitzvah -- for Sloth. They really did adopt him, just like Chunk promised!

I'd say Ke Huy Quan saved the most lives of this cast. Corey Feldman (Mouth) saved the people of Santa Carla from vampires, Sean Astin saved middle earth from Sauron, Josh Brolin saved half the universe (by... ahem... killing the other half)... but Ke saved the mutliverse by talking his wife into embracing kindness.

Just want to point out that while the decal on the truck does look like a swastika at first glance, it actually isn’t. It’s close but you’d have to rearrange it a bit to make it actually be in the shape of a swastika, but then it wouldn’t be anatomically correct for what it’s supposed to be.

To your question "Which actor saved the most people on screen?": Probably Matt Smith in Doctor Who. He stopped the destruction of time itself (and therefor essentially saved everything that ever lived in the universe) at least twice. So .... take that, Marvel! :P

Never thought of it this way before today but the constant overtalking is a holdover from 70s filmmakers like Robert Altman who constantly pushed for natural conversation. It's not easy to follow sometimes but it's how kids talk

Just started watching... "This is a kids' movie?" Erm, it's an 80s kids' movie. Nuff said. Also notice, one of the first lines of dialogue from one of the kids, in this case Chunk... is "Aw shit!" Yeah, 80s kids movies. Made for everyone. Oh, trivia... the actor who played Mikey and Brand's father at the end, the guy with glasses who tears up the contract thing.... he wrote the movie Free Willy.

1. Not sure I'd call The Goonies a "kids' movie;" I'd say it's more of a "family movie." It's great for kids, sure, but, it does have some more "mature themes." All ages can enjoy it! 2. What is a Goonie? In the movie's fictional version of Astoria, OR, the "poor" part of town is called the Goon Docks. The kids from there call themselves "Goonies," with pride! 3. Most wishing wells (in my experience) have the coins collected for a specified charity.
