The Goons 'The Raspberry song' 1978 45 rpm

One of the last 2 recordings made by Peter Sellers. Harry Secombe and Spike Milligan as The Goons.
Recorded in 1978 it is a reworked version of Jack Hodges 1933 recording of 'Everything Is Fresh Today' • Jack Hodges - Raspberr... which Spike had sent up in his series Q7 a year earlier.

I never thought of it was one of Peter's last gifts to us, your dad was quite the opposite to mine, he didn't like them at all mum neither. I've no idea where I got my wacky sense of humour from but these boys fed it from being 9 when The 'Ying Tong Song' was reissued and again shot into the top ten.

When I was based in the Falklands there was only ONE radio station - FIBS - Falkland Island Broadcasting Service. They had bought up many of the old BBC radio programs lucky for us! The only entertainment was our battery radios or cassette players no TV- just radio. Every Thursday night we would all sit in our portacabins around the 'wireless' as we called it and listened to THE GOOD SHOW! It kept the morale of the troops up 8000 miles from home. I will always ADORE the Goons, my late mum got me onto them and many others like 'Round The Horn' - 'The Navy Lark' and many others. Happy Days THANKS Spike, Harry and Peter for keeping us 'sane'!!! LOL

Bless you, AND ALL OF OUR TROUPS. I am a retired vet, Royal Navy, joining at the age of 13 in the Junior Royal Navy on The TS. Arethusa opposite Chatham dockyard, and going to HMS Ganges at the age of 15, at 16 I went to sea. When I was discharged, one of my jobs was a copper in The Met. London. I almost died making an arrest, I lost so much blood, I thought I was going to die. I SERVED, LIKE YOU, OUR WONDERFUL QUEEN, AND OUR COUNTRY. I was prepared to serve in The Falklands, but was not asked to.

The Goons' brand of insanity helps to keep us sane. I grew up with a regular diet of Goon Show madness. When Spike Milligan died he ascended to the Pearly Gates. However, due to Milligan's many sinful indiscretions during his life on Earth, Saint Peter sent him straight down to Hell. Three-quarters of an hour later Heaven's phone rang. It was the Devil, begging God to take Milligan back. Long live The Goons.

As a Yank, the first I heard of the Goons was when the Beatles referred to them in interviews ca. 1964. I had no clue who they were beyond that. And then I heard some of their songs, including this one, on the Dr. Demento Show starting in the late 1970s.

Spike had "a thing" for this tune. View his TV take on it ("The Fresh Fruit Song") as well as Jack Hodges' original and its "B-side," "The Razz Melody". And bless 'em all but I've lately listened to more of the Goons than in years past. Their anarchy is all the more timely for a simple reason: It's CREATIVE.

I assume it was Harry blowing the raspberries in this, we'd already been treated to his raspberries in the Ying Tong Song. He was very good at making them sound really outrageous. Didn't realise they were recording as late as this Al.

Maybe it was because of Spike doing the send up a year earlier that he got the lads back together for this last recording, Harry was the expert raspberry blower although Spike was very proficient having supplied the rasps on The Two Ronnie's mini serial of his 'The Phantom Raspberry Blower Of Old London Town'.The other A side next week.

It's not Seagoon providing the raspberries here, it's the Famous Eccles himself. Spike Milligna (the well-known typing error) had quite a distinctive style of delivering raspberries, quite tunefully. Compare the ones here with those in 'The Phantom Raspberry Blower' and the version of this song in the Q series, it's all Spike.
